I need some help guys. I assume since you're posting in the 300 page Ashley fan thread, you guys know everything. I'm still just doing a bare bones preparation run through of ME1, remembering dialogue and putting points in Charm, stuff like that.

I've decided I'm going to show SOME interest in Liara, but let her down in the confrontation scene. I also remember how tricky it can be to romance Ashley. Do you guys know all the ins and outs of Ashley's Normandy dialogue, so that I can know exactly what responses lead to what outcome?

It's not very hard.  Just flirt whenever the option comes up.    Save before you talk to her every time so you can try out different combos.  There's some good stuff in there that's flirty but the dialogue option doesn't really look like it.

Just be careful when wooing both of them.  There is a conversation you have with Liara that will completely shut off the Ash romance, so you might not even get the confrontation scene if you have that.

Well they did say that Vega's focused on being my bullet-sponge surviving. So pretty much this is what's going to happen:

Ash: (blows a husk's head off with her shotgun) That's number twenty! How many have you got Vega?

Vega: (swarmed by husks as Shepard is frantically pressing buttons on his omni-tool) Not nearly enough M'am! (Shepard finally finishes his string of commands and incinerates the husks around Vega)

Shepard: You alright Jim?

Vega: (brushing charred husk bits off his armor) I'm pretty scratched up from those husks, and I think you might have singed my eyebrows off with that last move, but its nothing that a bucket of medigel can't fix sir.

With Liara? Hmm, I might have already screwed it up in this preliminary run I'm doing then. I completed the second story planet and that made Liara and Ashley bring each other up in the next conversations. I told Liara both she and Ash were special, and when Ashley brought up Liara, there's two responses that make Shepard say "You think I'm interested in Liara because I'm allowed to date her?" and one where you show disapproval of her attitude. 

I always thought if you imply you are interested in Liara, no matter what you say to Ash, it gets screwed up.

That is commonly reported but it is not the case.

You are correct about the Liara conversation.  If you do not tell Liara that "Ash is Special" then that will in fact terminate the Ash romance.

When you are talking to Ash you can in fact take the line "You think I'm interested in Liara because she's the only one I can date?" and still get the confrontation and pick Ash.  I have seen it posted in multiple places that the only way to keep Ash is to pick the renegade response there that is something to the effect of it not being her business.  That works too, but it isn't required.

Another killer is if you are doing N7 missions in between story planets and unlock dialogue faster than you would if you just did the story planets.  What can happen is that if you go and talk to Liara past the conversation where she brings up Ashley, you can end up advancing into her locked in romance dialogue where you talk about asari reproduction.  If you get that far then the Ashley romance is terminated.

Other Ash romance killers occur sporadically.  Like early when you talk about aliens and you tell her "you're out of line."  Or if you are a complete ass about her on the Eden Prime mission.  Those can sabotage it, but you would have seen the sister's message about Kaidan instead of you already.

Hmm. I can probably get through it fine, though the other tricky part of this is getting the confrontation scene. I only managed to get that scene the first time I played the game, funnily enough. I somehow screwed it up every other time I played a male character.

What are the conditions for that scene? It depends partly on how you've progressed through the story - I think part of the reason I don't get it is because of how I go through the missions.

Ash-Liara-confrontation?

Dunno. Never had that scene, never wanted to see it. I like Liara, but she's not the type of woman I'd like to ask for a date - she's not creating that nice warm fuzzy feeling in my belly (or Shepard's belly in my universe). Ash on the other side ... yummi!

By the way - yeah, that bugs me too. Ash & Miranda are similar in some ways, but also quite different. I think I once wrote something about this issue - and tried to explain why lots of Ashley-fans fell for Miranda and why some of those fans will return to Ash in ME3.

Still - although I really like Miranda up to a point I love her as a character, she's still #2 (or #3, depends on scale) behind #1 - and that's always my beloved Ash

You have to go through the dialogue far enough before the 3rd story planet, if I remember correctly.  That's counting Therum, Feros, Noveria and Virmire (not Eden Prime or the Citadel).  Ashley has more dialogue to get through since you get her earlier and can talk to her after Eden Prime and after getting command of the Normandy.  I don't think you can get it if you take too long and do all four.

When I originally played the game I did Therum, Feros, Noveria and then Virmire. I am pretty sure I got the confrontation after Noveria... more recently I was going Therum, Noveria, Feros, Virmire.  I think that it usually is the 3rd story planet, but it might just be the next story planet after you advance the dialogue enough if you do a bunch of side missions.

Basically I think if you progress in the conversations to the point where each one asks about the other one, making sure to tell Liara that Ash is special, and then say "Yes there is something between us" to continue the romance then it should trigger after the story planet.

Don't feel bad about messing it up.  I got the confrontation 4 striaght times when I first played the game... then didn't play the game for like a year and then managed to sabotage the Ash one by telling her she was out of line once, and then talking to Liara too much by doing a bunch of side missions early on.  This was by accident because at the time I hadn't read any guides.  Afterwards I was surprised I kept getting Liara and started looking up some things.  But I noticed some of what people were saying wasn't entirely accurate, especially the bit about the dialogue with Ashley when she asks about Liara.

That explains why half of the ME-fandom dislikes Ash
They never got her on the good side and Ash is unforgiving.

(I wonder if BW will ever create a game series that allow really dynamic relationships and multiple ways to get "in the pants" of a specific person)

As long as if we'll get our hands on Ash, I'm fine (sounds soo wrong). If we get that via multiple roads, I'm better. And if I can decide between "hawt sexy scene" and "romantic ending", I'm scr*wed (sounds even more wrong)!

Ash is worth it.

Wow this forum's been a busy little bee while I've been away. Glad to see that the white on Ash's armor is the SpecTRe logo. I would have hated it if they made her look like she was wearing Klingon armor... -.-... (yes, I'm a trek nerd. Pity me.)

Also - an update. Duet effect is proceeding nicely. Just about to land on Eden Prime.
