I might write another snippet as a part two, but I really can't be bothered right now. Anyway, here's something a little different. An alternate Eden Prime ending.
Shepard: How's she doing, doc?
Chakwas: Gunnery Chief Williams has been unconcious for nearly fifteen hours now. I can find nothing phyiscally wrong with her aside from the scrapes and bruises from the ground-side fighting.
Shepard: Any indication on when she might wake up? The Captain's getting restless. Wants me to debrief her soon as she does.
Chakwas: I can assure you that she is fine, perhaps having a few nightmares.
Shepard: Nightmares?
Chakwas: Yes. Shes showing abnormal beta-waves. Typically signs of intense dreaming.
Shepard: I see.
Chakwas: I know that look, Commander.
Shepard: What look, Doctor?
Chakwas: The one that cries 'I should have tried harder. This is all my fault'.
Shepard: It is my fault, Doc.
Chakwas: Oh, come now. No one could have predicted the beacon would have done this, or that the mission would have ended the way it did.
Shepard: It was and is my job to protect my subordinates and I failed, simple as that. And a marine who wasn't even supposed to be involved at all got knocked out cause I wasn't fast enough to push her out of the way of a dangerous situation.
Chakwas: But more importantly, what of Chief Williams' fate now?
Shepard: What do you mean?
Chakwas: Is she to replace Jenkins on the manifest?
Shepard: She's a good marine. And I've made my recommendation, Anderson gets the final -
Ashley: *starts to stir and groans as she tries to sit up*
Chakwas: You had us worried there, Chief Williams. How are you feeling?
Ashley: Urh... like the morning after a night out on the town. How long was I out?
Chakwas: About fifteen hours. Something happened with the Beacon, I believe.
Shepard: When you wondered a little too close to the beacon, some kind of automated defense system activated. I tried to push you out of the way, but some sort of energy barrier stopped me from getting anywhere near you.
Ashley: I'm sorry, sir. It was my fault.
Shepard: You had no way to know what would happen. *slight humor* But from now on, as a rule, no going near big glowing alien devices. Understood?
Ashley: No argument from me, Commander.
Chakwas: Actually we don't even know what set it off. Unfortunately, we'll never get the chance to find out.
Shepard: When the energy field dispersed, the beacon detonated. Some kind of final safety measure? I don't know. But whatever happened knocked you out. Eden Prime's facilities were decimated, so we brought you to the Normandy instead.
Ashley: Damn it. I'm sincerely sorry sir. Your mission got screwed because of -
Shepard: *raises hand to stop halt her talking* I hardly think it's your fault Williams. Losing the beacon was a set back, yes. But right now, focus on resting. The Captain wants to debrief you personally.
Ashley: Yes, sir.
