Ashley: Not in the middle of a fight!

Two months after the suicide missions, earth, Alliance base.

Ashley: Joker?
Joker: Ashley? I didn’t think I’d ever see you again! Wait, you’re a …Spectre?
Ashley: I worked my ass of for it, but- No not literally so stop staring at it.
Joker: Sorry, just eh checking. Go on.
Ashley: With a bit of pushing and the Alliance pulling some strings, the council accepted me in. I just hope, it can help make a difference. How’s life treated you Joker? You look tired.
Joker: Rough, chief- or whatever your rank is now, rough. A suicide mission isn’t very relaxing, you know?
Ashley: No you’re right, god, it must have been awful. How’s the rest of the crew and…How’s Shepard?
Joker: We’ve lost a lot of good people Ashley, a lot. It all went to hell, over half the crew didn’t make it, but we blew that damn base to shreds and even then Cerberus wasn’t pleased! So that was it, we got the job done and all they did was complain, they are no better then the Alliance!
Ashley: Damn straight they aren’t! But you were successful you stopped the collectors, that’s a relief. What about the Reapers?
Joker: They were building one, a human reaper, well if they want another they’ll have to start from scratch. The Reapers are still coming, they're closer every day, that’s why I’m here to warn them.
Ashley: I hope they’ll listen this time, we can’t make the same mistake again!
Joker: You're so right, but knowing the toolbags that we need to convince, I bet it isn't gonna be easy. Anyway, we'll have plenty of time to worry about that later.  So tell me, I still don't know why you were at Horizon.
Ashley: I was tasked with the defence of the colony, but they weren’t ready, they didn’t want those big guns to defend them. Hell, one of them had even sabotaged the cannons, that’s why the calibrations were off! You were jus-Oh, I think I gotta go speak with the defence committee, Anderson’s looking impatient and we don’t want to get the officers mad now do we? It was good talking to you Joker, we need to catch up sometime and ... say Shepard I missed him, I’d like to see him sometime.
Joker: …I can’t Ash.
Ashley: Why not? He’s not here?
Joker: He…Because he-he never left the Collector base, Ash.
Ashley: What? No, no this is a joke right? No you said we lost a lot of good people just then, that’s you and Shepard, not-
Joker: Ashley, he left us…for good this time, that’s why I’m here and not him. He’s…dead.

This is something I wanted to work into Halcyon WAY WAY WAY before the beta leak. So don't call this 'spoilers' please. Also, set way, way way after the Reaper war.

Ashley snapped around with her rifle aimed towards the unwelcome guest. His concealed by the pitch black helmet he wore, and his right arm looked like a skeleton of metal with flimsily attached plates, bloated to his shoulder. Even with the helmet, she could tell who it is. The cautious stance and the distinct red stripe down his left arm.

"I'm getting you out of here, Ash." He said by way of greeting, noteing the bags under her eyes, the clammy state of her skin and the general image of her. A farcry from the neat and prim Lieutenant Commander he used to know.

"Go to hell." She said, not letting the rifle drop an inch. "I'm not going back to the Alliance."

Shepard pulled off his helmet. Ashley's eyes narrowed a bit, noticing the thin scar line travelling over his right eye. It still looked angry and red, no doubt the Cerberus implants embedded within him had portrayed the illusion that the scars were far worse than they were. He placed it aside and pulled his finger off the trigger, a makeshift sign of peace.

"I never said I was taking you to the Alliance. I just want to help, Ash."

Ashley turns away, her Sniper lowered to a resting position. "I don't want help. Best thing I can do is shoot these bastards before they kill me."

"Ashley, Listen to yourself." Shepard begged, taking a step closer experimentally. "Do you really think this is you?"
"Oh, god. Not a pep talk. Give me the talk, and I cap you right now."

Shepard halted, placing his pistol in the clasp on his belt. "I wasn't going to give a peptalk. I was just stating the obvious. This twisited vengeance isn't you Ash."

"Don't presume you know me, Shepard. You've got no idea what I'm going through. And I'm not moving from this spot until these bastards are dead, or I am. So, leave John."

Shepard folded his arms, "No." He answered bluntly, not fazed by the rifle aimed back at him. "I'm not leaving, Ash."

"Get out of here John. I will shoot you." Ashley warned with a tinge of anger in her tone.

Shepard shrugged indifferently. "Alright died twice, I'll come back again Ash."

Ashley's expression hardened. "I Will do it, John."

Shepard answered defiantly, walking towards her as an act of provocations. "Then shoot me, 'cause I'm not leaving without you."

... end - for now.

@Aurora; She sounds so cold...I'm not sure what to think of that, if she's ever be able to talk to him like that, a lot of sh*t must have happened. Then again Shepard isn't exactly doing a great job at approaching her either. I feel it needs a follow up, I wanna know what you have in mind with such a bitter Ash.

Sad & nice one, Brain. Also love your's, Aurora ...
Seems Ashley gives a lot of drama, what'ya think?

Lets try a less sad one.

Ashley: There you are, Skip!
Shepard: Yeah. Right under a dead cannibal ... *coughs*
Ashley: Are you okay?
Shepard: Used to feel better. Could you get that goddamn thing of me? It's heavy, and my arm is broken.
Ashley: Sure ... Garrus, need a hand here.
Garrus: On three ... one ... two ... three *hnngh*
Shepard: Thank you two ... I thought I would die. Again.
Ashley: That joke starts growing old, John.
Garrus: Indeed. You're okay, Shepard?
Shepard: I'm fine, Garrus. Just let EDI know we're done here.
Garrus: Will do - Garrus to Normandy, EDI ... *talks in background*
Ashley: So you didn't die.
Shepard: Yes. Just got burried under a cannibal. They look familiar.
Ashley: Batarian. Seems the Reapers use them as their ground army. I never liked Batarians, but that's just hell. No one deserves this. Not even them.
Shepard: Hmm. We can't help the Batarians ... not now.
Ashley: At least not with a broken arm. C'mon Skip, Normandy will be here any moment. Chakwas should have a look and in a week or so you'll be fine.
Shepard: We don't have another week. I hope Chakwas can fix it faster.
Ashley: You need to rest, John. We'll do the job while your arm is healing - just don't wanna see you breaking like that arm, okay? If you don't rest, this will happen.
Shepard: Reapers don't give us a break, you know?
Ashley: Learn to trust your friends. You don't have to take on every single fight here. We're with you and we know what to do. Just trust us.
Shepard: I trust you, Ash.
Ashley: I know.

Yeah, that brings some balance to the dialogues, Data :)

I have to say, I'm intrigued by the thought of a ME3 without Shepard (I know, that's not gonna happen) That'd make for some interesting fanfic material for sure...For instance, would Ashley take command of the Normandy if it were still confiscated by the Alliance?

Sure, why not? The question is - will the galaxy survive without Shepard? I don't think so. Ashley is a fine soldier, she can do a lot on her own, but I don't think she'll be able to unite citadel races for the war. She's an even worse diplomat than Shepard.

So she might take command and tries to save the galaxy, but she'll fail ultimately. Dunno why - it seems to come down to Shepard's duty to do that and when he's dead, the galaxy's fate is sealed.

I might write another snippet as a part two, but I really can't be bothered right now. Anyway, here's something a little different. An alternate Eden Prime ending.

Shepard: How's she doing, doc?
Chakwas: Gunnery Chief Williams has been unconcious for nearly fifteen hours now. I can find nothing phyiscally wrong with her aside from the scrapes and bruises from the ground-side fighting.
Shepard: Any indication on when she might wake up? The Captain's getting restless. Wants me to debrief her soon as she does.
Chakwas: I can assure you that she is fine, perhaps having a few nightmares.
Shepard: Nightmares?
Chakwas: Yes. Shes showing abnormal beta-waves. Typically signs of intense dreaming.
Shepard: I see.
Chakwas: I know that look, Commander.
Shepard: What look, Doctor?
Chakwas: The one that cries 'I should have tried harder. This is all my fault'.
Shepard: It is my fault, Doc.
Chakwas: Oh, come now. No one could have predicted the beacon would have done this, or that the mission would have ended the way it did.
Shepard: It was and is my job to protect my subordinates and I failed, simple as that. And a marine who wasn't even supposed to be involved at all got knocked out cause I wasn't fast enough to push her out of the way of a dangerous situation.
Chakwas: But more importantly, what of Chief Williams' fate now?
Shepard: What do you mean?
Chakwas: Is she to replace Jenkins on the manifest?
Shepard: She's a good marine. And I've made my recommendation, Anderson gets the final -
Ashley: *starts to stir and groans as she tries to sit up*
Chakwas: You had us worried there, Chief Williams. How are you feeling?
Ashley: Urh... like the morning after a night out on the town. How long was I out?
Chakwas: About fifteen hours. Something happened with the Beacon, I believe.
Shepard: When you wondered a little too close to the beacon, some kind of automated defense system activated. I tried to push you out of the way, but some sort of energy barrier stopped me from getting anywhere near you.
Ashley: I'm sorry, sir. It was my fault.
Shepard: You had no way to know what would happen. *slight humor* But from now on, as a rule, no going near big glowing alien devices. Understood?
Ashley: No argument from me, Commander.
Chakwas: Actually we don't even know what set it off. Unfortunately, we'll never get the chance to find out.
Shepard: When the energy field dispersed, the beacon detonated. Some kind of final safety measure? I don't know. But whatever happened knocked you out. Eden Prime's facilities were decimated, so we brought you to the Normandy instead.
Ashley: Damn it. I'm sincerely sorry sir. Your mission got screwed because of -
Shepard: *raises hand to stop halt her talking* I hardly think it's your fault Williams. Losing the beacon was a set back, yes. But right now, focus on resting. The Captain wants to debrief you personally.
Ashley: Yes, sir.

That could be interesting - how would ME turn out at the end if Ashley were the one with all the protean stuff in her head?
Liara and her mindmelt is some kind of plot device and Shepard is needed here too. If Ashley is the one with the stuff in her head, she needs to make it through the entire game (including Virmire) and also needs to be in your squad when finding the Virmire beacon.

Next to Shepard and Liara Ashley needs plot armor so Shepard's team make it to Ilos & Saren.

Interesting idea ...

Here's a different kind of scenario for you. One that I think Ash would do if Shepard remained dead through ME2.

Ashley: Liara.
Liara: Chief Williams. I hadn't expected to see you here.
Ashley: Funny. I thought you were an information broker?
Liara: I am, but I will admit that I was not looking for information about you. No offence.
Ashley: Can't say I like you knowing about everything I do.
Liara: Can I help you with anything, or are you intending to spit venom?
Ashley: Sorry, to ask you this and you need to understand that this is awkward for me too.
Liara: I'm afraid that I have my own project to attend to, so please be quick about your request.
Ashley: I need information.
Liara: What kind of information?
Ashley: The kind that only one person alive has. The Prothean beacon.
Liara: *stunned silence* I see. You wish to continue Shepard's work?
Ashley: Everyone has all but abandoned it. I'd be insulting the memory of someone I l - care about if I decided to abandon it too. Especially considering that omni-cidial monsters are headed our way.
Liara: I understand. But are you sure?
Ashley: If I don't ask now, I won't have the guts to later. I ain't happy about this either. Just - get it over with, now. Before I change my mind about it.
Liara: I understand. I'll try to be respectful.
Ashley: Just do it!
Liara: Very well. Embrace Eternity!

Not likely to happen, but hey - it's a scenario.

It could happen between ME1 and ME2 as ashley thinks that Shepards dead and not comming back. We know from ME2 that the council and the alliance were trying to cover up the reapers. This could be ashleys was of staying loyal to Shepard.

Basically, Halcyon is the 'After the War' time period.

The Galaxy is in civil war, all the major governments/species/cultures that were involved in stopping the Reapers have pretty much fallen apart. It's a merciless, lawless cosmos that made the pre-war period look like a tea party out of 'Pride and Predjudice'.

It's gone to sh*t, and Shepard had died a second time (though he was only clyinically dead, his brain was still functional thanks to the implants and he got revived about twenty minutes later - hence the 'I've already died twice' line.), so as the Galaxy grew more bitter and merciless, so did the gang. An example is that one point during, when Anderson tries to recruit Shepard again, his answer is put bluntly: 'f*ck off'.

The 'Halcyon Confedarate' I created is a multi-lateral organisation trying to re-establish order and government, while the rest of the galaxy want them to ****** off and stop trying so hard. And the tolls that I believe would have been suffered during the Reaper War finally manifest in outward agression. Hence Ash and Shepard's bitter and rather emotionless reunion in that snippet, desepite their being lovers (or possibly married at this point, I have no idea. Gotta see the ME3 epilogue for that). Also, be noted at that point in time, Ash has PTSD, which in part was caused by Shepard... again.

That be the long and short of it.

Think I can pull that off? With al the snippets I've shown you?

And here I was thinking that after Shepard kicks the reapers back out into dark space, the races in the galaxy would finaly get along.

Oh well, look out here comes ME4

I'm just writing it because unfortunately, in the real world, a lot of the things in life get worse before they get better. That's why I'm writing the title as 'Halcyon' to give it a sense of irony, since they can't just go back to life before the Reapers and they can't forget about it that quickly either.

Hmm, yeah, Aurora gets a point here: if most of the government got destroyed and half of a civilization as well, they can't go on as if nothing happened. It's quite plausible the remains of that civilization fall apart and every splinter faction will fight the other one to gain power. As long as there's no "figurehead" being able to unite them again, they won't form another big civilization.

In such scenario, Ashley will be one of the most disillusioned characters. She fought for the Alliance which no longer exists. The Council is dead, so she's also no Spectre anymore. Her entire career ended, her old life does no longer exist. That should change her, make her to a bitter woman - even more if Shepard died too.

True. Bioware has said that we won't be able to save everyone in ME3, which is more "real life" than fiction. just hope shepards apartment from ME1 is still there (what a great view that had) and perfect for 2 people.

Has anybody ever wondered what Ashley's reaction would be like to those shepard adverts lol? "My name is commander shepard and this is my favourite store on the citadel." I've been thinking about it for like the past four minutes now as my Playstation updates. Boggles the mind it does.

Ashley: The Store has your voice.
Shepard: Yea, I kind of gave them an endorsement.
Ashley: But... you don't even like sport.
Shepard: I needed a new hoodie, alright? My last one got a whole dozen bullet holes through it, and those guys said they'd make me a new one for free if I gave em an endorsement.
Ashley: What about those guys over there?
Shepard: Ash- there's a time and a place for everything and -
VISHEPARD: I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my Favourite story on the citadel.

Shepard: Why, I did it only to get a discount on that lingerie I bought you.

Shepard: Ash
