*sigh* Another slow-Ashley-thread-day ... -.-

Just for info: Ashley talks to Hackett about Shepard's mission in Arrival. No spoilers involved, but a lot of stuff that could be explained by BW in a similar way in ME3.
....

Nice one but there is a minor error. Her rank is "Second Lieutenant".

Ashley: Admiral Hackett, Sir!
Hackett: Yes, Operation Chief? Ah, I'm sorry, you got promoted - Lieutenant Commander, right?
Ashley: Yes Sir. Jumped some ranks. Guess it has to do with that last mission ...
Hackett: I bet it does. What do you need, Lt. Commander?
Ashley: Just a few minutes. May I speak freely?
Hackett: Permission granted.
Ashley: It's about Shepard. I heard rumors ... heard you gave him a special task.
Hackett: Keep the rumors being rumors. I can't talk to you about any assignments of Shepard.
Ashley: So you had contact with him.
Hackett: Indeed.
Ashley: And you sent him on a mission. You know he's still working for Cerberus and you can't trust him.
Hackett: I know about Shepard's connections to Cerberus. But I trust him.
Ashley:
Sir, with all due respect ... you should not trust Shepard. And as I
can see this, you gave a traitor viable informations for a mission I was
assigned originally.
Hackett: Shepard is no traitor.
Ashley: As long as he's not reporting directly to you or any other Admiral of the Alliance, I consider him as one.
Hackett: Then you should reconsider your image of Commander Shepard.
Ashley: Sir, I just want to know why you send him on that mission. Why him, why not me? I read the briefing, I prepared everything - and when I was on my way to the Shuttle your adjutant told me the mission is over and got handed over to a Spectre.
Hackett: Indeed. And you figured out that Spectre was Shepard.
Ashley: Your adjutant helped me a bit.
Hackett: So he did his job.
Ashley: What is going on, Admiral?
Hackett: You know almost everything about the mission, but that's only half of the entire image. The other half is secret. No one knows about it, not even Shepard. All I can say: the Alliance is lying. Don't trust the Council. Don't trust anyone.
Ashley: Sir?
Hackett: The Reapers -are- coming. The Council knows that as well. Everyone is preparing for the Invasion. Shepard's job is to find out what's going on in the Bahak system. He's out there to get the last piece of the puzzle, the very proof the Reapers will be here. We'll send that piece of evidence to the Council as soon as Shepard returns.
Ashley: And that's the big secret?
Hackett: No. The secret is around Shepard. You must trust him. You can not trust Cerberus, but you must trust him.
Ashley: You can't expect me trusting a traitor.
Hackett: He's no traitor.
Ashley: Sir, I think he is.
Hackett: And I said it before: reconsider your image of Shepard. Don't allow your feelings to blur your senses.
Ashley: There are no feelings for Shepard, Admiral.
Hackett: I'm not blind, Lt. Commander. You broke the rule once. You're still breaking the rule. And you will break the rule again.

She jumped that one to. According to the leaked beta movie, Ash is a Lt. Commander. :P

Repost necessary so no one has to go one page back

Can't remember clearly. It kind of weird. Don't you think? A NCO jumped two three ranks and becomes a commander.

Think she got promoted shortly before she got introduced into SPECTRE ranks. The Alliance wants to make sure the human Spectre also has the authority of an Alliance commanding officer. Also I believe (so it's no spoiler!) the Alliance wants to make sure an officer of the Alliance is taking command over the SR2: Ashley/Kaidan are new COs of the Normandy.

I bet Anderson pulled some strings: there must be a reason why Ash/Kaidan becomes new Spectre (ignoring Battle of Citadel). He's also responsible for that promotion.

It isn't.
And I am already writing stuff. However, I don't think I'll make it into writer's team of BW :P

Ashley: Nope.
Shepard: Nope.
Hackett: Maybe.
Anderson: Possible but ... wouldn't count on that.
Ashley: Okay, maaaaaaaaaaaaybe.
Hackett: That's what I said ...
Shepard: I still say no.

That's good but I don't think Ash actually thinks Shepard is a traitor. She was just emotional. Not to mention I don't think she would say it to Hackett just as much as I don't think Hackett would know/care/comment on whatever her relationship with Shepard was.

Ash strikes me as someone who wants to believe that Shepard is back and real and doing the right thing. The only thing jabbing her in the side is that damn Cerberus thing and the idea that Shepard may not even be Shepard. It might be easier for her to try to convince herself that he's not.

But I don't think she would ever sell him out to Hackett or the Council or anything. I think her words on Horizon were more personally motivated than anything else.

I would say my little dialogue happens just days after "Horizon". Ashley is still quite emotional. Shepard doesn't get her message yet, she still has to write it. However, Hackett already contacted him and gave him the "Arrival mission".

So I deal with following issues:

- Arrival was intented to be the "VS mission". I heard it once - and I think originally Arrival had a stage when BW wanted to add the VS. Makes sense, since it's a mission from Hackett, and the VS trusts him.

- Someone has to put some sense in Ashley's (or Kaidan's) head - which results in said message. Without Hackett, the VS would still believe Shepard is a traitor.

- The Alliance and the Council KNOW the Reapers are coming, but they can not allow publicity knows that to avoid panic. They're preparating the fleets for that invasion.
That's part of "headcanon" from another user who said, the Council -knows- the Reapers are coming. The Turian council member knows it as well ( Click me ).

In short: my little dialogue happens in the short time span between Horizon and Hackett's briefing. That can not be any longer than 3, 4 days. Since Ashley / Kaidan are bound emotionally to Shepard, that time is not enough to cool down mood. After all, they believed Shepard is death, now he's back. That alone gives a headache of feelings. Plus the Cerberus stuff - I bet, the VS has a really hard time swallowing it.

Oooooooooookay ... since Aurora is missing ...

Hackett told me to trust Shepard. But how? He's working for Cerberus, an organisation found to achieve human supremacy over the galaxy. I don't know what's more frightening: the thought they're humans like me, or the fact Shepard is working for them. However, Hackett trusts him. He sent Shepard on a mission in the Bahak system, to find evidence of the return of the Reapers. If Shepard is the one I used to know, he'll find the evidence. That should be enough to redeem himself for the Council, for the Alliance. But is that enough for me? Can I trust him once more?

Lt. Willard: Sir, we have something on our sensors. Unknown vessel. Size: approx 2 kilometers.
Cpt. Pendergast: On screen.
Lt. Willard: Aye, Sir. Ship on screen.
Cpt. Pendergast: My God ...
Cmdr. Zharkov: Sir?
Cpt. Pendergast: Send word to HQ ... we have a contact: the Reapers are here.
Cmdr. Zharkov: Aye, Sir.
Lt. Willard: Sir, the vessel is approaching our position. What is your order?
Cpt. Pendergast: Raise kinetic barriers. Set course to the Thorne System.
Lt. Willard: Aye aye, Captain.
Cmdr. Zharkov: Incoming enemy craft.
Cpt. Pendergast:Send them to hell - activate GARDIAN!
Cmdr. Zharkov:Understood. GARDIAN active.
Lt. Willard:Direct hit, barriers holding.
Cpt. Pendergast: We don't have much time here. How long until FTL drive is back online?
Cmrd. Zharkov: Engine room reports five minutes. Cool down still in progress.
Cpt. Pendergast: Damnit. Need to go out of here.
Lt. Willard: Another hit astern! Barriers still holding, down to thirty percent!
Cpt. Pendergast: Reroute power of weapon systems to the barriers.
Lt. Willard: Too late! Barriers down! Plotting evasive maneuvers - pattern Delta Four!
Cmdr. Zharkov: GARDIAN reports overheating. Too many targets, we can't take them out!
Lt. Willard: Sir, port engine offline! They got us! They got us!!
Cmdr. Zharkov: Damage report coming in ... hull breaches on most decks ... primary systems offline.
Lt. Willard: What shall we do, Captain?
Cpt. Pendergast: God ... abandon the ship ... we need to abandon the-

We lost the SSV Mount Everest two days ago. That's all what we've got - the last three minutes of a once mighty space ship. The Reapers are back. Bahak was not their only backdoor. I know we need to prepare for that invasion - but is there still time left? Even Anderson doesn't know how close they are. But Shepard does. I do. If we want to win this war, I need to trust him again. But first, there's one thing I need to know. One question that's still keeping me awake in the night, and bothers me at day. Did Shepard love me? And does he now? I wish I would know, and at the same time I fear the answer.
There's another thing I need to do first. The Council wants to see me. I have no idea what's going on. Anderson doesn't tell me anything, Hackett had no idea ...[/]

Asari Council member: Two years ago, the first member of your race became a Spectre. Today we're here to invite another human to the ranks of the SPECTREs. Shepard of Terra died in the course of his duty two years ago. The Council came to the conclusion to invite a new member of the human race to the SPECTREs to fill Shepard's place. Councilman Anderson?
Councilman Anderson: We were looking for someone we can trust. Someone defined by determination, by bravery and passion. Someone who knew the Commander, and someone who can take his place. Lieutenant Commander Williams - step up.
Salarian Council member: Today we're introducing you to the SPECTREs, Ashley Williams of Terra. As the second human Spectre you will take Shepard's place to face the Reaper threat. You will continue what Shepard began, and will succeed where he failed.
Turian Council member: Shepards actions will not be forgotten. You were choosen to honor Shepard, not to replace him in our memories. Being a Spectre will need more than bravery and determination. And you'll need everything to succeed in this difficult task. The entire galaxy's hope is lying on your shoulders, Spectre Williams.[/b]
Councilman Anderson: Good luck, Ashley Williams. The Council and the Alliance is counting on you.

[i]Now I know how Shepard felt when they made him to a Spectre. It is a exciting and frighting thought. Am I ready for this burden? I don't think so. I don't even know where to start. I don't have a ship, no crew. All I have is a new title, everyone is expecting me to save the galaxy.
My Lord, bless my strength and teach my arm for fight, guide me through the darkness of war and spare those who are close to me. Amen.

I reckon Shepard would probably rent himself out as a bodyguard or something. Probably change his name, let his hair grow out a bit (not shoulder length, just enough to spike it maybe), maybe even change his name to hide from his past reputation. You know, something that's on the move, has a measurable amount of excitement but no galactic consequences...

In my Halcyon Verse though - after the Reaper war, he was crippled, and I mean CRIPPLED!
Half his left hand was gone, his right arm and leg were cut off and he was rendered blind (with a pretty nasty scar over his face to boot). Every government collapsed and the Verse was in a state of anarchy. Halcyon was created to try and restore some semblance of government and the only Reason Shepard agreed to rehabilitate was to find Ash whose location was unknown.

Oooooooh, me want to read Halycon now. Sounds deep.

I second that.

Poor Shepard. Hope the rehab will help him to get back on his "feet". And I hope there's enough Shepard left to call him "human". Does Ashley can love him anymore? She's not the shallow type, but Shepard is ... there's only half of Shepard left and alive.

Well, following my Headcanon+Hypothese, Shepard of ME2 isn't the same man as ME1. Same body, same memories, same personality, but still quite a different individual. Ash and Jon-Mal both know this, and don't care. They still love each other regardless of that because as Ash will state in a flashback

(Halcyon spoiler)
"Cerberus may have made you based on a man who gave his life to defend the galaxy. And in a way, he's the core of you. He's still alive to me. He's just changed, grown stronger and adapted to the hell that the galaxy has thrown at him. To become you."

Shepard actually doesn't get a say in things (someone blackmails him into finding Ash), much like the whole Cerberus thing, but this time he's working for the 'good guys' IE, the people trying to establish some kind of order, but he makes it very clear that he's only there for Ash. Once she's found, he'll take her and leave. Regardless of whether she still loves him or not.

True, but since Kaidan dies if Ashley gets to make it to ME3, she was the human on Shepard's combat teams that saved Saren so she's already got "saved the galaxy" on her resume and Anderson is most likely councilor and he transfers her to the Normandy on Eden Prime so naturally after sheaprd she's like a prized pupil to him. He knows a good solider when he sees it so he probably fast tracked her.
