@Data. What did you think of my Dialogue yesterday? Between Miranda and Ashley?
ME1 had only three mission vaguely related to the main story. You only fought the main villian twice. In ME2 you fight the main villain 3 times (Horizon, on their ship, and in their base.) You also explore the other half of the ME universe and get insight on the Geth, Krogan, and Quarians as well as the majority of the terminus systems. Shepard had a ton of side missions in ME1 when there was an actual REAPER flying about. Now it's ust their lackies that know how to stealth. plus the collectors were targetting shepard and their crew specifically (which is why Horizon got attacked because Ashley and Kaidan were there.) Overall it's a deeper story and a fantastic bridge into the Reapers invading than ME1 was. Especially since Shepard has to pretty do that on their own without the council and Alliance but with Cerberus.CptData wrote...

um ME2 was rated higher than Me1 and also won awards for writing that, to the best of my knowledge, ME1 didn't. I wouldn't call ME2 a failure just because two characters were missing. There's more to Mass Effect than Ashley and Kaidan.
It's not the lack of Kaidan or Ashley in ME2. It's more ... and don't get me wrong ... the math:
Only 6 missions of ME2 are directly related to the game's main story: defeating the Reapers. If you add both DLCs "Arrival" and "LotSB" to "essential missions" that number raises to 8. I think I calculated something like 25 total missions - means the rest are non-story related missions. There's too much recruiting and loyalizing involved and that takes out a lot of speed of the plot. Isn't it time critical since with every passing day another colony could get abducted? Does Shepard have the time to do all those "side missions"? I'm just asking.
Overall I think ME2 got rushed. It feels incomplete; 6 - 12 months more time could have finished the game.
ME1 got less points because the gameplay wasn't finished and the combat system was incomplete. I think ME1 with ME2 or ME3 technology but same story and extras would score more points.

Can someone else put up an Ashley image to compensate. My mac doesn't like doing 'T-Ash'es.

Data; You say you can't put your finger on it but I think you just did.
I do believe it came down to putting too many characters in ME2, that's why I'm glad they are going back to a squad of six, but I still wish they'd (taken) more time for the final game. Well I shouldn't start judging them for that until I've actually played the game.

MY DUDES!
*snippy*
Kaidan: "Run."
Ashley: "What're you gonna do?"
Kaidan: "Run the other direction. She can't catch both of us."

Too many characters (even though I liked most of them) and too much focus on gaining their loyalty. Needed more story missions or closer together or... something to make it seem more fluid. You hit it on the head I think Data.
As for Ashley not being in ME2... I absolutely hated that aspect. I keep thinking, HOPING, that I'd see her again... see her near the end, but it never happen. I rushed through the game trying to find another Ash moment and it just never happened. It was so disappointing. And to top it off... no mention of her (or kaidan) in ANY of the DLC that came out, where even people like Hackett (who we hadn't even SEEN before Arrival) were mentioned.

Even if I could not have Ash with me, I'd loved to read more mails or have a second meeting on the Citadel. Even if it's entirely unrelated to the story and "free choice".

Pretty sure I've said that before. I totally agree.
Ash could have been in the game in other ways... they just didn't wanna spend the effort.
