Mrs. Williams: Ashley! What a surprise! I thought you would come tomorrow. And that young man is John you talked about?
Ashley: Hi Mom - how are you? And yes, that's him. I bet you know his story?
Mrs. Williams: Just the official stuff from the news. Guess the only one here knowing more about him is you, Ash -- Mr. Shepard, do you need a hand?
Shepard: *caries three cases at once* No, everything fine, Mrs. Williams.
Mrs. Williams: By the way, why all those suitcases?
Ashley: Didn't you get that message? John, did you forget to write a mail?
Shepard: What mail? I thought you would ...
Ashley: Oh jeez ... fine. Mom, sorry, we're going to stay for a week or so. Are you okay with that?
Mrs. Williams: Of course! It's always great to have you around. Just need to find a room for Mr. Shepard.
Ashley: He'll sleep in my room.
Mrs. Williams: I don't think so, young lady-
Ashley: Mom! I'm 27 already ... a Spectre and ... you still ...
Mrs. Williams: Just kidding you, sweety. Of course he can share your room ...
Ashley: Thanks, mom. John, are you done?
Shepard: Done. Nice to meet you, Mrs. Williams. I'm John Shepard. Think you heard of me in the news.
Mrs. Williams: Yes - but I'm more interested in the man behind the scenes, the one Ashley loves.
Ashley: Uhh, mom, by the way, where are Sarah and Lynn?
Mrs. Williams: They're visiting Abby. I'm sure she wants to see you both too, but first, come in-
Shepard: Well, thank you ...
Ashley: Mom ... I'm glad to be here again. I missed you - and everything.
Mrs. Williams: I know, Ash, I know ...

Well, with dialogues running a bit low on fuel I hope nobody minds if I post this. I wrote this little fanfic; if it's any good I plan to make it the first part of a three-part short fanfic and maybe post it on Storywrite or DeviantArt or something.  And I hope I didn't get any of the details wrong, like I made up a name for the ship that rescued the survivors from the Normandy SR1 even though I don't know whether or not there's a canonical name for it or even a fan-canon name. And there are also specific references to one of my Sheps.
Here goes nothing.  Wall of text in 3...2...1...

Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams hurried through the tight corridors of the SSV Manila.  Her pace and her breathing were quick but controlled, and the bun she usually wore her hair in was pulled back a bit tighter than normal.  As she went on her way she passed by two kinds of people: those who awkwardly avoided eye contact with her, and those who stared down with blank, shell-shocked expressions.  The former were the Manila’s regular crew; the latter had, until about five hours ago, been Chief Williams’ crewmates on the SSV Normandy.  The Manila, an Alliance Cruiser, had been on patrol near the border between the Traverse and the Terminus; they were the first to pick up the Normandy’s distress signals and arrive to provide assistance.  However, the mysterious vessel that came out of nowhere and attacked the Normandy finished its grim work in minutes; by the time the Manila arrived on the scene, there was nothing left to do but find the Normandy’s escape pods and evacuate the survivors.

Ashley didn’t pay much attention to the people around her, although her dark eyes glanced for half a second at every face, searching.  Before long she found herself in front of the door to the Manila’s med bay.  She took a deep breath – if she was going to find the answer to the question burning in her mind anywhere on this ship, it would probably be here.

The two-toned bright blue and dark gray door slid open automatically as Ashley stepped towards it.  Once inside, she looked around, noting a few of the people she had only known for a few months, but who already felt like old friends.  The young Quarian Tali’Zorah vas Neema was sitting upright on one of the med bay’s beds – it looked like she was fixing some minor damage to her environment suit, which meant the Manila’s doctor would need to make sure she hadn’t gotten an infection.  At the moment, he was trying to convince Doctor Chakwas, the Normandy’s Chief Medical Officer, to let him do his job and go get the respite he thought she so urgently needed.  Ashley smirked and mentally wished him luck; Chakwas was quite good at putting her foot down and not budging an inch when she wanted to.

The sight of Doctor Chakwas’ patient sharply brought Ashley’s train of thought back to the reason she had come to the med bay in the first place.  It was the Normandy’s pilot, Alliance Flight Lieutenant Jeff Moreau,
although the Normandy crew usually referred to him by his nickname, Joker.  He was lying on the bed behind Tali’s.  Ashley stepped forward so she could see him without Tali being in the way.  She
figured he must be in a lot of pain – his bones couldn’t take an escape pod’s rough landing, not to mention that Martin probably had to physically drag him off the bridge – but he had a distant look in his eyes, as though something on his mind was keeping him from feeling his body’s injuries.

Ashley hesitated for a moment, needing to ask but afraid of what the answer might be.  “Joker…”

“Hey, Ash.”  Joker’s voice sounded hollow and abnormally devoid of smartass remarks.

“Where’s the Commander?”

“He didn’t make it.”

Ashley felt her heart fall to the floor and shatter like a glass vase someone had dropped.  There was a long silence, eventually broken by a sorrowful whimper from Tali – “Oh, keelah.”

“That…” Ash faltered for a moment as she found her voice.  “That’s not possible.  It can’t be!”

Joker glared at her and tried to prop himself up on one arm.  “You think I’d lie – ow – about something like that?  I saw him get sucked out into…”  He stopped abruptly.  “Sh*t… look, I… I’m sorry, okay?  There was nothing I could do.”

“Losing Shepard is hard for us all, Jeff,” Doctor Chakwas remarked as she gently helped Joker lie down again.

“Shepard?” the Manila’s doctor asked.  “That’s the name of your CO, right?  Hero of the Citadel and all that?”

Chakwas nodded.  “Lieutenant Commander Martin Shepard is… was… more than just a Commanding Officer to us.  He was the heart and soul of his crew.”  She gave a subtle glance in Ashley’s direction, “Although this is truer for some of us than others.”

Ashley decided it would be a good idea to get out of there, just in case the Manila’s doctor tried to make sense of that cryptic statement.  “I just remembered… I need to… um… I should go.”  As she turned to leave, her own words reminded her of one of the Normandy crew’s inside jokes regarding their leader, and she stifled a sob before anyone else could notice it.

On her way out of the med bay, Ashley overheard Tali murmuring something about the ancestors guiding the spirit of the fallen; probably part of some kind of traditional Quarian rite.  Ash felt a need to pray too, but she wasn’t sure what to say.  She just headed straight for the crew’s quarters and found the bunk that had been temporarily assigned to her for her stay on board the Manila.  After checking to make certain no one else was around to see or hear her, she sat down on the edge of her bunk and allowed her tears to flow freely.  “God, why?  Why him and not me?”

That's it. I've never written from Ash's POV before, so somebody let me know if I screwed up (but be polite about it please).

Long time no answer ^^

I like it. Of course, it's your headcanon, therefore "Martin" - guess that's why I either stick with "Shepard" or use his default name. That's even more true since my own canon Shepard got the name "Jacob" - before ME2 was released.

It's nice to see Ashley's reaction - she tries to keep her emotions under control until alone. It fits to her. Good work :-)

Something thought about would be Shepard seeing Ashley lead in person after last knowing her as his/her subordinate. Liek Shepard's running througha huge battle and Ashley's barking out orders to soldiers to get a foot hold or push back the enemy. I think there will be proud tears a flowing.
