Really? I find it really easy to not romance her if I don't want to.

So you can have completely civilized dialogues with her and flag her romances? What choices do you pick if I may ask?

My Shep's never been able to not romance her unless he told her to keep it professional/not to question him (which I think is also an option when she's talking to her sister on the phone about him being cute but again he sounds pretty jerkish there.) I don't know why there's not a polite paragon "I'm not interested Ash." like there is for Liara the only way you can turn her down nicely is if you're romancing Liara as well.

Ah a more complete form of avoiding her romance I didn't write this. Nilfalasiel from Clan Vakarian did:

Ashley

1. There are two indications that the romance with Ashley is active:

- During the conversation where you interrupt her video-call with her sister, the latter will comment that Shepard is cute.

- She will call you "skipper" when conversations end (after you pick the "goodbye" conversation option).

If the romance is inactive:

- Her sister will mention that Kaidan is cute instead.

- She will call you "sir" or "Commander" when conversations end. She may still call you "skipper" during the conversation (this happens at least once), but as long as she doesn't say it when the conversation ends, the romance is not active.

2.The best time (and the earliest) for turning the romance off is during the first post-Citadel conversation you can have with her. If you turn her down at this point, you can keep being civil to her in all subsequent convos, and you won't miss out on any of her Codex entries.

The conversation will have her mentioning that she's not sure the alien crewmembers should have full access to the Normandy. Picking the middle-LEFT response ("you're out of line!") will have Shepard asking her whether she always questions her superiors like that. She'll apologize and remain strictly professional from then on: the romance
will not trigger, and you'll have the same conversations with her as a FemShep would.

3. It is also possible to turn the romance off during the video-call conversation. When she asks "tell me you didn't
hear that", picking the bottom-right response will have Shepard sternly reminding her that it's inappropriate to comment on how cute your Commanding Officer is. She will apologize and stay professional, but you will miss out on a Codex entry about the Alliance military.

4. Conversations outside the Normandy should not have an effect on romance progression. However, during the first visit to the Citadel, it is possible to have a conversation with Ashley and Kaidan about a view of the station from the Wards, during which Ashley may flirt (her "tinfoil miniskirt" line). I don't know whether this has an effect on turning the
romance on or off, but it's possible to avoid the comment altogether. When Ashley mentions aliens not liking humans, NOT picking the top-right response will avoid the comment. It seems it's also possible to respond negatively to the comment, which has been reported as a valid romance turn-off. If true, this would actually be the earliest point to turn her down.

Honestly I can't remember off the top of my head (been playing FemSheps recently, and the last DudeShep I had did romance her) but I vaguely remember the "keeping it professional" line so I probably used that.

Yeah my Sheps either miss that trigger (I didn't even learn about that until several playthroughs later because I was rushing to recruit Garrus and Wrex) worse part is it's an easy trigger to miss >_>

And the "Don't question me!" line sounds like typical renegade not giving people a break (and I understood Ash's concerns) and if you play nice nice paragon like I do most of the time...well...=]

And even now I occasionally forget about it in gameplay then curse when I realize I recruited Garrus (doesn't help that he's right next to the trigger and do not feel like going back to my last save (I use quicksave most of the time so...yeah. :pinched:)

Don't flirt with her with your conversation options simples.

It's nowhere near that simple. Ash ninjamances like crazy (a conversation with her about her grandfather flags the romance for the love of pete) and it's annoying as hell. It's part of the reason I virmire her 99% of the time.

Completely innocent dialogue choices result in the romance being flagged.

IMO it's fairly easy to tell which options are the flirt options and which aren't. Not to mention, I like my conversations like that. Where I'm not sure of the outcome and where my hand isn't being held like in DA2.

I think it'd be rather easy to choose the correct dialogue choices and not romance her without having to be an **** to her either. Then again, I always get pulled in by the romance b/c I just can't stay away from Ash in ME1. Soooo, yeah...

lol, that post totally helped, amirite!?

heheh it's okay, Ashley can have some intimidation to her. She is after all, a Spectre so it comes with the job.

And why do I feel attracted to a woman like her?

C'mon

without being either insane or totally worthy doing so. ../../../images/forum/emoticons/lol.png

*raises hand* I'd love to have a lethal woman at my side like Ashley because life's more fun that way.

I'd love that too, but guess such a woman is only interested in a guy far more awesome than herself. Which does not apply. Guess you need to save the galaxy (or at least a world) to get her attention.

Well after seeing the beta video I'm kind of disappointed in Ash and now I want to do a PT without romancing her.
Problem is I've already started and have done the recruit Liara mission and flirted with Ash afterwards so I guess I am at stage 1 of that. Problem is I have heard many people didn't think they were in a romance with Ash just to find out in ME2 it says they were as evidenced by picture. Most people say only way to be sure she doesn't get flagged as your ME love interest is to leave her on Virmire which I'd like to avoid. Any tips on making sure to end the relationship with her without killing her or trying to get with Liara? I want to go into ME 2 unattached.

Hmm, you can have as many playthroughs as you want, so why not trying one without Ash as romance? Youcould pick her and leave her on Virmire if you want (and can), even if that romance is active. That's fair if you don't intend to have a long lasting relationship with her AND want to give Kaidan a chance instead (as friend).
But since you don't want to virmire Ash, you definitely should try use the tactics mentioned by Ryzaki.

Why are you disappointed by the way? I mean, lets ignore Ashley's new uniform - I'm pretty sure her romantic arc won't get sidelined or played down somehow. You should give her a chance in at least one playthrough. I'm sure you'll do that :innocent:

BTW: Am I the only one thinking it's odd giving tips how to AVOID Ashley romance in the Ashley thread?

Hey CptData how is that part five Ashley dialogue coming on? I could use some of that right now......I've got writers bloc. I guess it's my fault for buying "Lord of the Rings War of the North" I've been playing it for days now.

Don't get me wrong - I have like 4 or 5 playthrough's all with Ashley and staying loyal to her.  I had so many I started to run out of names for Shepard and had to start stealing other neat sounding names, my last playthrough (my "canon" one for ME3) I named him Kratos, from the God of War series.  And that will be the playthrough I do first and the one I am most looking forward to.
But I am now curious about what it would be like doing a playthrough romancing only Miranda, I am very curious how that would play out in ME3, also since it isn't clear what role Miranda will have.  There are three reasons:
1) I was hoping Ash would make at least show some notion she wants to talk to Shepard after he's done with his interview/trial, even if there was no romance she was kind of rude to him on Horizon.  I'm sure all that will get hashed out later at a more opportune time but still.  Also, "I used to" know the Commander - PLEASE don't tell me that's the line they'll use if he romanced her and stayed loyal in ME2.
2) I love seeing Ash's hair down, but in the beta at least I think they did something to her face that doesn't look quite right.  There was an article I read entitled "Ashley gets the angry gorilla makeover" and has some observations about her different look.  I think it's most the eyebrows.  Hopefully they will fix that too.
3) I always thought Miranda was not as attractive as Ash, I couldn't figure out why until I read someone who called it, that she has a big square Sylvester Stallone jaw.  After that I've always seen her as Stallone-Jaw but recently I saw a couple pretty well done pieces of fan art that tone down the man jaw a little bit and she looks pretty good.  The model they base her on, Yvonne Strahovski (sp?), also doesn't have that jaw problem and I'm wondering that if they're changing Ashley's face maybe they'll change Miranda's too.

Anyway none of those are big enough reasons by themselves, but taken together it's probably at least worth one playthrough to see what happens.

Oh Ryzaki thanks for that great find on how to manage the romance. I forgot you could drop a "professional" line at the sister's phone call dialogue. That will be my plan A. Plan B is the locker scene. Plan C, I've heard another way to do it is start romancing Liara, then when the confrontation happens choose Liara, then break up with Liara because it is easier to end it with Liara than Ash in dialogue. Wonder if that's true.

It isn't complete, yet. You do realize that it's the unfinished beta, right? And that it's a fresh-start Shepard.

FYI. They'll be more lines added to that first meeting in the real game.

@Rdubs
Think the introduction to Shepard before the trial won't be the same like shown in the leaked beta video: that Shepard never had a romance with Ashley. She knew him, since the events of ME1 and ME2 still happened, but Shepard never picked the romance with her.

I think the guys with a romanced Ash will see something different, maybe not here, but maybe later in the game.

Oh, and I don't think Miri is ugly. I just can't romance her - or I would cheat on Ash. And that's a no go.

Maybe it was Anderson talking without a mouth that clued me in it may be a beta.   And I did state previously that the Shepard was non-romance.  But you don't need a degree in economics to figure out that it's more efficient to develop scenes in a batch, and record lines only once, so I'd be surprised if they added much to the final version from the beta.  That includes a version where Shep romanced Ash because hard to see that scene playing out differently.  But at least now if the real version is different and better I will be very pleasantly surprised.

If you know from insider knowledge they'll be adding more lines to that scene then hooray, but less than that you're stating your hopes as fact, you might want to qualify your statement.

Data - your lips to God's ears! I'd just be surprised. But I am hoping you are correct, just preparing for what we saw to be the way it will be regardless.
Now I am wondering though, that picture we saw with Ash and Shep standing next to each other, the one where people were trying to figure out if that's a chair or weapon behind Shepard's back...guess that's not her bringing Shepard to trial any more, must be them watching the destruction after they escape.

Believe me, I'm one of those fans who really care for the character named Ash. She is one my of all time favorites already and finds herself on a list that also includes such characters like:

- Android Data (Star Trek)
- Spock (dito)
- Captain Jack Sparrow (uhh you know ^^)
- Obi Wan Kenobi (I really like him ...)
...

My list isn't that long, but contains some unique characters. Either they do have some special trait or just feel awesome. I always had a thing for old & wise characters acting as mentors ...

@CptData My Writers Bloc has cleared Check this one out:

Deck 2 XO's Quarters
18.30hrs

Door Chime: DING DING
Ashley: Yes
Shepard: Its Shepard can I come in?
Ashley: Just a second *Dam I was just getting to the good part*........ok come on in
Shepard: I'm not interrupting anything am I?
Ashley: No I was just reading through some reports
Shepard: Oh anything interesting
Ashley: No all boring stuff, nothing you'd be interested in
Shepard: Oh they must have been a little interesting as we were supposed to meet for dinner thirty minutes ago.
Ashley: Oh is it that time already, I must of lost track of the time, Well no time to waste then.
Shepard: You've been in here for over 4 hours *Walks over to her desk* normally you do everything possible to get
out of reading reports.
Ashley: Yeh well I'm an officer now I can't get away with it like I used to. I know why don't we go to that Chinese restaurant you like?
Shepard: You said it gives you gas?
Ashley: Well what's a little gas between lovers, come on if we're quick we can beat the late rush.

*Ashley tries to grab Shepards arm and pull him away from her desk*

Shepard: Hang on those aren't reports *Picks up a data pad from Ashley desk*
Ashley: Yes they are......Of course they are.......what else would they be?
Shepard: These are audio and video transcripts from the Normandy and from some of my missions.
Ashley: Is there.....Must be part of one of those boring reports. I know lets order in then we can cosy up and watch
one of of 20th century films you like.
Shepard: Just a second Ash..........All these transcripts are between me and other women. look Miranda, Kelly,
Tali, Liara, Jack, Kasumi, Samara even Gianna Parasini & Shelia on Illium. Are you checking up on me.
Ashley: Checking up on you......how ridiculous man you've got such a big ego.
Shepard: This is about what Garrus said isn't it, about all those offers I got after I came back
Ashley: You think I'm jealous of those women just because they thought you were attractive.
Shepard: You are jealous I can tell, The little hairs at the back of you're neck stand on end.
Ashley: Fine I admit it I was checking up on you. Happy now?
Shepard: and what did you find out?
Ashley: That despite all those offers and the fact I said you betrayed me on Horizion, you stayed loyal to me.

*Shepard pulls Ashley over to him, there bodies up against each other and kisses her passionately*

Shepard: How could I ever betray the perfect woman?
Ashley: oh you're such a charmer John *Kisses Shepard*

Ashley: God, I always hate coming back from fighting Husks!
Vega: They explode, blow our your shields and claw away at your armour like Loco!
Ashley: I know. It sucks. I only just got this armour! It was brand new! SHINING! Didn't even have a chance to tune it to my personal colours yet! And then the Reapers showed up and with attacks left and right.
Vega: I know the feeling. And it's already bad enough we already have our own resident Zombie.
Ashley: Call him that again James, and I will not be happy.
Vega: Sorry ma'am.
Ashley: Also, don't let him hear you call him that.
Vega: I thought he said, and I quote 'I wouldn't care if you called me the Devil himself'.
Ashley: No, it's not that he'll be insulted or anything. It's just that -
Disembodied voice from behind them: Braaaaaains!!!
Vega: *nearly jumps out of his skin.* HOLY SH!T!
Shepard: *laughing his ass off as the tactical clock drops.*
Ashley: You are a very bad man.
Vega: Ok, enough with the jokes.
Shepard: Sorry, but you're the FNG. It's a time honoured tradition to tease the crap out of you.
Ashley: Uh, yeah. Sorry. It kind of is. Don't worry. Happened to me too.
Vega: *To Ash* How did you stop it?
Ashley: Broke a few noses, ribs and such... You know. Fun stuff.
Shepard: Wasn't fun for Alenko and Chakwas. Having to patch up half the crew.
Ashley: Worth it.
Vega: I should be following you around instead ma'am. Haha!
Ashley: Nothing stopping you.
Shepard: Uh - Pfft! Hell no! Go find your own protege!
Ashley: Jealous.
Shepard: I am not!
Ashley: Yea. Sure.

That's cute. Jealous-cute, but cute ^^

I'll give my (short) try here before doing Part V:
----------------------------------

Ashley: EDI, do you log anything that happens on the Normandy?
EDI: Yes.
Ashley: Even private conversations?
EDI: Yes. The logfiles are stored for mission debriefing and until deleting by N7 level personnel.
Ashley: Do I have access to those files?
EDI: Your Spectre status grants access to those files.
Ashley: Fine. I need access to files regarding conversations between Shepard and following members of the old crew: Miranda, Jack, Samara, Kelly, Tali, Kasumi and Joker.
EDI: Specify time span.
Ashley: Time between first log in of Shepard and signing of after return to Earth.
EDI: Preparing list: 492 logfiles of conversation fit the given filter.
Ashley: Put them on my datapad, EDI.
EDI: Transfer complete.
Ashley: Thank you.

*** some hours later ***

Shepard: Fine Joker. Bring us in the docking bay.
Joker: Yes, commander.
Ashley: Mister John Shepard!
Joker: I'm not here ...
Shepard: Hey Ash. What's up?
Ashley: Keep calling me that and I'll kick you off my ship.
Shepard: Technically it's my ship ... what's up, you sound upset?!
Ashley: Faithful? You call THAT faithful? *throws datapad at Shepard's head*
Shepard: Ouch! Ash, what's wrong with you?!
Ashley: Read it. Read that datapad and maybe you'll find out.
Shepard: *reads a few lines*
Ashley: And Joker ...
Joker: ... I said I'm not here - keep me out of your little argument and I won't have to break bones. MY bones.
Ashley: Watching porn while on duty is one thing. Getting access to internal security cam system and watching crewmen in private situations is ...
EDI: To be honest I've granted access to security cam system to study Joker's reaction ...
Shepard: Okay, guys. I think I know what's going on. EDI - stop granting access to that system for Joker.
EDI: Acknowledged.
Shepard: Ash, I wasn't cheating on you. I cared for my crew and tried to make them feeling comfortable. I don't know why you think I was cheating on you.
Ashley: Ask Miranda. You did her at the blind spot in the engine room, am I right?
Shepard: I had no sexual contact with her.
Ashley: Do I need to ask her?
Shepard: Sure. She won't tell you a different story. We were professionals on a missions. No sex. You know me.
Ashley: Says the man who tends to flirt with his subordinates.
Shepard: Only if she's special. Like you.
Joker: Could you please go? I feel uneasy ...
Shepard: Never met a woman like you again in the past months, Ash. You're special to me. I felt it on Horizon ... and the months after. I couldn't bear the thought it was over ... and swore not to lose faith that I'll somehow get you back.
Ashley: I'm not sure if I can believe you, Skipper.
Shepard: I survived the suicide mission, the attack on the Collectors behind the O4 relay. I came back against all odds. Just for you. I can't do anything more to prove I was faithful and only yours.
Ashley: You can do something ...
Shepard: Yes?
Ashley: A date. You and me. And we'll see ...

Nice dialogues Auroa and CptData^^^^^^^

Got this idea from CptData's dialogue above about who's in command of the Normandy

SSV Normandy SR2 - Just escaped Earth Heading for Sol Relay
Deck 2 cockpit
11.30hrs

Shepard: Once we're through the relay I want you to head for Arcturus Station we need to find out what happened to the Alliance Fleet
Ashley: Hold on a second I'm in command of the Normandy
Shepard: Were in command of the Normandy Lt. Commander considered yourself relived. Joker.....
Ashley: Like hell Anderson only reinstated your Active duty status.
Shepard: Which means my Commission and Command of the Normandy
Ashley: Not until I'm ordered by a superior officer to turn command over to you.
Shepard: Consider yourself ordered by your superior officer Commander John Shepard
Ashley: What....You arrogant, pig headed son of a bit* h

*Shepard grabs Ashley's arm and pulls her to one side*

Shepard: Hey now listen to me I know you're angry at me and I know you're scared about the reapers, But I need you here with me I can't do this without you.
Ashley: But what can you do huh, after everything you've already done the reapers are still ripping Earth to shreds right now and you're just running away.
Shepard: I'm not running Ash right now there's no way we can get the reapers off Earth. Even if we got every last Alliance ship together it wouldn't come close.
Ashley: But every second we waste a lot of people will die
Shepard: I know that, I feel that, I see it every time I close my eyes but remember what Anderson said....
Ashley: "It's a fight we can't win not without help"
Shepard: I knew this day was coming for a long time I'd hoped we would have more time but we don't. I haven't been sitting back like the Council and the Alliance
Ashley: What do you mean?
Shepard: I've been planning, gathering allies, resources, Intel anything I could do to prepare now its time
Ashley: For what?
Shepard: For War. So how about Ashley will you walk out on me again or stand with me and fight through hell, together as we always should of.
Ashley: I never wanted to walk away from you John its just It hurt so much to lose you
Shepard: I can't promise I won't die this is war, but what ever time we do have left I don't want us to be enemies not then not now.
Ashley: Nor do I, There's so much that we need to talk about when will we ever get the time now
Shepard: We'll make time. The reapers tried to pull us apart once and we're still here together.....right
Ashley: *smiles* Right Skipper lets go save the galaxy.

*Ashley and Shepard walk back over to Joker*

Joker: So which of you is in command?
Ashley: Shepard is and always has been now get us to Arcturus station on the double mister
Joker: Sir, Yes Sir

I think it'd be rather easy to choose the correct dialogue choices and not romance her without having to be an **** to her either. Then again, I always get pulled in by the romance b/c I just can't stay away from Ash in ME1. Soooo, yeah...

lol, that post totally helped, amirite!?

I don't know. I don't see how talking to her about her grandfather is supposed to be a flirt option. Nor many of the other choices that entail just being friendly and non hardass. Heck someone did a run through and many of Ash's romance starters weren't romantic/flirty on Shep's end at all. I wish I could find the post *searches*

And you may like that but I certainly don't. not unless I later get a "Uh...not interested sorry." option like I did in DAO (now that game had obvious romance choices were obvious). It results in me feeling like the romance is being shoved down my throat and getting me agitated. I don't like feeling trapped with my only way out to be a complete ******.

It's actually not. Every romance killer line has Shepard sharply reprimanding her. Which is OOC for my laid back, charming paragon who wouldn't care if she found him cute but just wouldn't return flirtation (heck most of my characters I like that. They wouldn't get on her case about Garrus/Wrex and they wouldn't jump down her throat when she does that tinfoil and miniskirt line. Thus he's constantly ninja'd unless I nuke her. The only LI Shep can take compliments from but still be like "I like you...just not in that way." seem to be Tali and Liara.

And you're not really a good judge if you're always doing the romance. Try just being a friend and not picking any blatantly flirty dialogue. Let's see how well (don't use any of the romance killer lines) you fare. Though...now that I think about it. I can justify the "keep it professional." line by having my Shep in a bad mood thanks to the council...that works perfectly!

Oh Ryzaki thanks for that great find on how to manage the romance. I forgot you could drop a "professional" line
at the sister's phone call dialogue. That will be my plan A. Plan B is the locker scene. Plan C, I've heard another way to do it is start romancing Liara, then when the confrontation happens choose Liara, then break up with Liara because it is easier to end it with Liara than Ash in dialogue. Wonder if that's true.

Not sure. It *should* be possible (I think Liara offers Shep an out during the final romance convo with her before Ilos). But I'm not positive.

Thus is the way of the "ninjamance", it seems.

I don't think there's any help I can provide, seeing as how the only male Shepard I've made is romancing Ashley. I can, however, at least confirm she's not the only case. My first Shepard was a woman, and no matter how platonic I tried to keep the conversation, Kaidan kept thinking I was sending signals, and rumors would spread. Not that I didn't like the guy, but I had a certain turian in mind for this particular Shepard.

Then, in the sequel, I deliberately avoided saying things like "I want you, Thane", but I still got a "Siha" at the end. I don't even think there's any way around that, so I just had to stop talking to him. You can guess how many times I talked to Jacob. Sad, since I actually like the guy.

Also, with the manShep I was romancing Ash with, I thought I had made it very clear to Liara that I was not the least bit interested in her. I stopped short of yelling at her, even though that wouldn't have been too out of character. So even though I told her that I cared about Ash (a lot!) and that I did not see her in that way... I still got a confrontation.

Just seems to be an issue with the mechanics... if the character is romanceable, they automatically assume the fact that you're talking to them means you're interested, and rarely can you just dodge it. It's not really Ashley's fault, things were... a bit limited.

I read the script. It has more lines.

I could make the same claim, of course there's no way to prove or disprove that.  However you haven't given us any reason to think you're making that up so all I have to say is....1) jealous of your contacts or however you managed to do so, and 2) that's great news that there's something more to look forward to, and I thank you for mentioning it.  I'm feeling a little better that maybe she'll act like she still feels something towards Shepard even before they have a chance to really talk.  Regardless, March 6th can't get here soon enough...now I look forward to seeing the differences between the beta (w/o romance) and the final (w/ romance) as much as I looked forward to seeing the opening.

I've been worried about what happens with Ashley ever since Chris L'Etoile (her original writer) left.
