Guess they're a bit more than "just friends". Friends with benefits, I guess?

When Shepard finds out - dialogue:

Shepard:Chief Williams ...
Ashley: Hey Skip-
Shepard: I think we beyond that point, Chief.
Ashley: Sir?
Shepard: Lieutenant Alenko and you ... you're more than friends.
Ashley: We're friends, just that.
Shepard: Chief, it's your decision how you call it. This is still an Alliance ship and we have rules dealing with fraternization. I think those rules have a purpose.
Ashley: With all due respect, Sir - you seemed not to have issues with those rules as long as you were flirting with me.
Shepard: I wasn't done, Chief.
Ashley: Commander?
Shepard: Keep it secret and I'm fine with that. Understood?
Ashley: That's it? No long talk about rules and morality and ... c'mon Skipper, you can do better.
Shepard: And stop calling me that, Chief Williams.
Ashley: Aye aye, Commander.
Shepard: Dismissed.


Uhhh ... think Shepard sounds really butthurt here. Guess he's the jealous type. At least he can pull his rank and hide his feelings behind rules and protocol.

That explains why Ash was so hurt when Shepard virmired Kaidan. He found out about both.

Naa, seriously - think they work well as best friends in ME1, but never had a chance for more. However, there was a chance for a love triangle between Ash, Kaidan and Shepard (both genders). Lets say it were possible to save both on Virmire, do you think they would have been more than friends? At least once Shepard died with the Normandy, Ash could have tried to find comfort in Kaidans arms (or vice versa, in case f!Shep died).
Think that works for me. :happy:

Shepard Chief?
Ashley: May I speak freely?
Shepard: Yes.
Ashley: I don't understand you. When you found out what happened between Lt. Alenko and myself, you suddenly changed to formal mode. I thought we were friends.
Shepard: Chief, I don't think I should answer private questions.
Ashley: Do you want to know what I believe?
Shepard: Go on.
Ashley: You're jealous.
Shepard: I'm not. And I think we should stop here.
Ashley: And then? We both know this will come up one day again. Better talk about it now than later.
Shepard: Chief, watch your tone.
Ashley: Cut the bull with the ranks! This isn't between Chief Williams and Commander Shepard but between Ashley and John. You said I can speak freely - now deal with it. What's wrong with you, John? Why can't we be friends, like before?
Shepard: Think you crossed a line when starting things with Kaidan.
Ashley: That's it? You're jealous and that's why you're threwing everything away? Oh, "sorry", Sir, that I don't meet your expections anymore.
Shepard: Ashley -
Ashley: Or maybe I'm blind? Maybe I simply can't see what you're trying to tell me? Did you ever talk to Kaidan lately? Did you ever tried to understand why it happened?
Shepard: Can I speak now?
Ashley: If you have anything to say, shoot.
Shepard: I said I'm fine with what you and Kaidan doing. I just wished I would
have seen all those little signs earlier, Ashley.
Ashley: What signs?
Shepard: Your affection for Kaidan.
Ashley What are you talking about? I like him as friend. There's nothing more.
Shepard: The logs tell a different story. You and Lt. Alenko shared one cabin for a full night - and as far as I know your both bunks are NOT in the same cabin.
Ashley: Oh ... that.
Shepard: Case closed to me, Ashley. And as I said before, keep it secret. The last thing I want now are rumors a certain Chief and a certain Lieutenant are a couple.
Ashley: You got everything wrong, John. Everything. I'm done with you. Sir.

Ashley leaves the captain's office and Shepard tries to puzzle things together ...

(Seriously, it was a pain in the ass to write that one. I hate butthurt Shepard & upset Ashley dialogues)

I really wonder if I should continue this one as well. It's so damn sad to see Ash & Shepard fighting each other. And, at least in that dialogue, Ashley doesn't give an easy fight.

Shepard: I suppose not. *chuckles, then yawns and stretches on his way to the kitchen.*

Ashley: Well how else do you make holy water?
Shepard: *double take.* Wait - what?
Ashley: Holy Water - Burn the hell out of it.
Shepard: ... Ok. One - Can we wait til we have kids before you crack 'Dad' jokes, and second, leave the 'Dad' Jokes to the appropriate parent please?
Ashley: Sorry. Too early in the morning?
Shepard: FAR too early.

*a few minutes later, the bell rings*
Ashley: I'll get it. *Ash opens the door. A woman with short brown hair and green eyes is standing on the other side. She's maybe a few years older than Shepard and looks slightly confused*
Woman: Is.. this John Shepard's residence?
Ashley: Can I ask who wants to know?
Woman: My name's Admiral Maria Stroud. He has something of mine that I would like returned.
Ashley: And what is that, please?
Woman: He has my grandfather's ring.
Ashley: Sorry, why would he...? *eyes widened in sudden realisation. She just understood whom she was speaking with.*
Woman: Because he was supposed to return it as part of the divorce settlement and never did.
Ashley: You're his-?
Woman: Yeah. I - uh - I'm his ex-wife.

And we meet the Second wife. Maria Stroud. (The one he was with during his addict stage).

Seems Shepard has a really bad day. First Ash cheats on him (okay, wouldn't call it cheating since they weren't together). Then his ex wife II appears. What next? Dying with the SR2?

'Sides, you guys know about Vera - haven't met Maria yet. Who knows, she might pop up in Halcyon or Duet Effect. Unfortunately I haven't been able to write them yet.

Part III of my "Shepard is jealous dialogue" - just for the info: since Kaidan is still alive Ashley doesn't know that Shepard has feelings for her.

Time passes slowly if one is not in peace with oneself.

Kaidan: Commander?
Shepard: Lieutenant.
Kaidan: I heard of that argument you had with the Chief. Everything alright?
Shepard: I just want some answers. About you and Williams.
Kaidan: We're friends.
Shepard: You're more than that, am I right - after all you two spent a night together.
Kaidan: Okay. Stop, right here. Can see where this is going. We didn't sleep together, if you're worried about that. Ash ... needed someone to talk to.
Shepard: Mind to tell me?
Kaidan: Indeed. It's nothing that might interfere with our mission - it was a talk between friends. And I promised nothing to tell anyone, including you.
Shepard: I see. So you two did not ...
Kaidan: No. We're friends and want to keep it that way.
Shepard: *sigh* I feel like an idiot.
Kaidan: You should tell Ashley ... never saw her that enraged. Not that I saw her that often within the last two months, but - you should talk to her.
Shepard: Don't know if a talk will fix anything.
Kaidan: You can try. If you don't try - lets put it this way: better to transfer her to the next starbase before anything bad happens. That's a recommendation, Sir.
Shepard: Noted. Okay, I'll see what I can do. Thank you, Kaidan.
Kaidan: Don't thank me now, Commander ...
Shepard: Don't try to cheer me up, what?
Kaidan: It's all your fault. Hope Ashley still listens to you.
Shepard: Yeah. Still wondering what you two had to discuss in that night.
Kaidan: You should ask her about that too. I won't give away any secrets.

Ashley: You're lovely ex-wife is here for her grandfather's ring.

*Clashing of multiple metal objects followed by a panicked and pained shout in gaelic.*

Ashley: I suggest you don't keep the nice woman waiting. *lowers her tone* And afterwards, we're going to have a nice... long. chat.
Shepard: Right. Look. I promise I'll explain absolutely everything. Just when she's gone, ok?
Ashley: You'd better. I don't like the feeling of being sloppy seconds, or is it thirds?
Shepard: That's not fair, Ash.
Ashley: Get your ass in there, get her out of here and then explain everything before I decide to get out of here. *enters the room and starts to clean up the mess as Shepard goes to chat with their guest. She's being quiet so she can evasdrop.*

Stroud: Hello, Knives. You're looking sober, for once. Glad to see you're not pink anymore. Or swimming in liquor.
Shepard:  Yeah. About that... I'm sor -
Stroud: I'm glad to see you got it out of your system.
Shepard: Eight years clean and counting. *awkwardly scratching his neck.* You um, kind of missed the whole 'redemption' stage of my life. Ended up on Wiess. Drifting around and sticking god-only-knows what in my arms. Surprised I survived -
Stroud: My Grandfather's ring, Knives? Where is it?
Shepard: ... Right. It's over here. In the dresser.

 *Uncomfortable silence.*

Shepard: Here.
Stroud: Thanks.
Shepard: Can I ask who's the -
Stroud: Jinx.
Shepard: Right.
Stroud: Good bye, Knives. *she leaves*

Ashley: Charming woman.
Shepard: You heard that?
Ashley: Its not like I couldn't. 
Shepard: I was trying to apologise, but she kept cutting me off.
Ashley: I don't think she wanted to hear it. And right now, what I want to know is EVERYTHING, before I decide to leave.
Shepard: You know what? Go right ahead. I really don't care. *rises to his feet, emoting geniune pain and regret.* All the women in my life leave me anyway. Why should this relationship be any different? *Walks away.*
