Yet... Vega's is something that most marines actually wear when not in their combat gear. His is believable. Sure, it's tight and shows off his assests... but he isn't fighting in it, and was never intended to.
He also wasn't in the previous two games and so his look is new... if he didn't have armor at all, I wouldn't care all that much b/c I have nothing to compare it to.
Ash's look is pretty much the complete opposite of what I think of when I think of her.
Ashley will get some armor (hopefully not that we have to pay for) ONLY b/c we b!tched about that look. I'm 99% sure that was her armor.
Anyway, that article is more right than it is wrong.
I have a feeling that if I try to argue regarding wether or not her new casual look is OOC with a casual from the Ashley thread, I will loose. Right, here goes nothing...
The way I see it, the cirscunstances between Ashley in ME1 and Ashley in ME3 have changed a lot. Back in ME1, she was new aboard the ship, serving with two of the most condecorated people in the Alliance, the organization she so desperately wanted to prove her worth to. As a result of that, we see Ashley wearing the official Alliance uniform at all times, her hair tied into a bum, etc. This is in-character for her. However, I also remember Ashley talking about mini-skirts and thigh high boots which seems to indicate that she does not have a problem with looking good when appropriate. The two are not mutually exclusive.
In ME3, unlike Vega who still wears the Alliance uniform or, at least, a personalized version of it, Ashley is not longer part of the Alliance. She has become a Spectre, she has years of combat experience under her belt, she no longer has the need to prove anything to anyone.
In this situation, I do not find it unthinkable that she wears a less formal outfit. For example, the artbook justifies her loose hair as Ashley being more confident around Shepard now that they're old acquaintances. Time passes, people change.
I do not deny that her casual outfit is meant for sex appeal. However, wether it be because they had intended all along or because the Ashley fans so rigthfully demanded it, she will not have to walk with it to battle. That, I agree, would not be Ashley.
I can justify the outfit like I did above in this post and even the fact that it has shoulder pads clearly meant for combat can be seen as a need for a Spectre to be always ready.
So, I'm not overly upset. It only bothers me somewhat when compared to the redesign Kaidan underwent and there you can clearly see the difference between his outfit and Ashley's.
