Which is exactly why Spectre status should be reinstated, even mandatory.

I'm really looking forward for that solution. I do have several scenarios in my mind, lets go through:

Scenario 1
Shepard: Spectre
Ashley/Kaidan: no Spectres
Result: Shepard will become CO of the Normandy since the Spectre status outranks any military rank.

Scenario 2
Shepard: Spectre
Ashley/Kaidan: Spectres
Result: Depending on "elder rights" (right word?). Since Shepard is Spectre for a longer time than Ashley/Kaidan, they should accept his/her orders - therefore, Shepard will be CO of the Normandy.

Scenario 3
Shepard: no Spectre
Ashley/Kaidan: no Spectres
Result: If Kaidan is alive, he outranks Shepard (Major > Commander). Since Shepard is no Spectre there is no way to become CO of the Normandy unless Anderson or any other Admiral orders Kaidan to obey Shepard's command.
In case if Ashley is alive, Shepard outranks her and becomes CO.

Scenario 4
Shepard: no Spectre
Ashley/Kaidan: Spectres
Result: There's no way Shepard becomes CO without the Spectre status. Either Kaidan or Ashley accept his/her role as CO out of loyalty, or they won't. There's no authority that may order them to follow Shepard.

In the end it's much easier for Shepard to become CO with his/her Spectre status. I really wonder what solution BW will use in case Shepard is no Spectre anymore.


Too bad this is not really Ashley related

I don't think the matter will come up in ME3. I am asuming after the Reaper attack the Alliance is pretty much non-exsistant besides a rag-tag resistence group on Earth. So it won't be a chain of command besides that Shepard is in charge of Shepards team.
Also I am assuming ME3 will be more guerilla warfare so it will be less about offical missions with chain of command and more about hurting the reapers everyway they can.

@ AD legend, your specter may want that but it is not going to happen. More or less you might find miranda with her sister. Alliance will not allow Miranda to be XO, and neither will the council.Due to her fact that she was cerberus. Both Alliance and Council consider cerberus to ber terrorists, there fore even as a spectre shepard will not get miranda as an XO. But I do love the Idea of Ashley being XO, that would be awsome. But then when My shepard and Ashley are busy with eacother in captain.s loft who mwould run the ship. HMM....

you forget Miranda quits Cerberus at the end of Mass Effect 2 when you destroy the base. so she's not cerberus. She's XO when she steps on my ship. no ifs ands or buts.

It does in the Alliance military. Major is like Colonel, equal to Captain. No idea why they did that.

I don't think that the Alliance will find that enough rhough, they'd probably doubt whether she genuinly quit Cerberus or if it's a trick to fool Shepard. But at the same time, if Shepard wants her as XO, it are chaotic times and the Alliance really can't have all that much power anymore, so s/he'd probably get away with it. Afterall doing his/her own thing got Sheps a long way.

Ashley wouldn't make for a brilliant XO in my mind, she likes being on the ground, in the thick of battle. And I think she'd prefer fixing guns over the work of an XO. You need to be able to be cold and calculating as an Xo, when needed, Ashley seems too emotional to me. And I would want nothing short of a brilliant XO in these times of all out war, if I were Shepard. Someone who can make the hard choices without hesitation, someone who I know of that s/he can do the job and preferably enjoys it aswell. That sounds more like Miri than Ash.

What does everyone make of Ashley and Shepard's lovestory thus far? Is this couple in it for the longhaul? And in the interest of fanning the flames of controversy, when it comes to survivability is a Miranda/Shepard union a better option?

Ashley's short lived love affair with the Commander was snuffed out two minutes into the reunion on Horizon. Granted, Ashley sends Shepard a heartfelt letter after the incident, but the refrain is I don't want to lose you. Loss is absolutely difficult and she has dealt with of it regarding Shepard. Of Course she didn't want to lose her Commander, her friend when the Normandy went down, she didn't want to lose the person she trusted and respected most in the galaxly to Cerberus' clutches, she certainly doesn't want to endure the loss of Shepard to another woman, but does a fear of loss translate into love? Was it ever love to begin with? Their relationship always had the potential for something great, but oppurtunity is not a lenghty visitor and after a two year hiatus is reviving the remnants of a decaying relationship even plausible? Of Course it would break my heart if it weren't, but is ME3 an easy stroll into the sunset or at most a new beginning for this couple?

Miranda and Shepard have the advantage of being on a more even keel and a happy ending seems much more like a legitimate possibility for them.

Honestly, it kinda depends on Shepard and the player. Half of the stuff we're writing here is fannon - based losely on Ashley's and Shepard's character. I think a lot of Ashley-fans have a paragon!Shepard (which seems to fit to the more renegadish Ashley), but also a lot of guys play renegade!Shepards with Ashley as LI. Fits both so far, however, I think a renegade!Shepard will have to put more effort into keeping the relationship with Ashley than a paragon one.

Why so?

I think a paragon!Shepard wants to settle down once the war is over. He simply did more for the galaxy in just three or four years than others in an entire life span. That also fits to Ashley. I doubt she want to live forever for the Alliance. She's the family type and raising a child on board of a Starship isn't the best solution. So both will settle down one day.

A renegade!Shepard on the other side enjoys his job. He won't settle down that easily and Ashley might follow him. As I stated before, she's a family person. She wants to settle down and found her own family one day. Now it depends on Shepard if he wants that too - but even if he accepts, he'll be restless; a renegade!Shepard needs the action. Dunno if Ash can live such life forever - I doubt so.


Miranda is quite similar here. Since she can't have kids, she might think about some other way to have children with Shepard (cloning?). I also don't think she wants a life full of action on the long run. However, she's more willing to follow Shepard into the fray, her life lasts longer and she's less the type for "settling down" than Ashley.
I dunno if Miranda enjoys a pure paragon!Shepard that much ...
Just my thoughts so far.

Let live or let die? I once had to answer the question when Shepard was dealing with Wrex. Almost had killed the Krogan - now I'm thankful I hadn't to do it. And now I'm in the same situation again. Just ... this time my gun points at him. John Shepard. I'm not sure if I should spare his life or not. He's not the same, not my Skipper anymore. And still, I can't pull the trigger when looking into his eyes. I can't. But I have to. For the galaxy.
