I need to read it ... so badly (wait, that does sound like a junkie-statement) ...

100 pages ago, Ashley took Shepard's Cain - and didn't return it ...

Ashley: Hm... pardon me?
Sarah: You weren't, were you? Argh! I knew it.
Ashley: I'm sorry, Sar', but I'm a little more than distracted...
Sarah: I'll say, and you're yawning a lot more too. I thought the point of going on leave was so you marine-types could relax with your family. Not look tense as ever.
Ashley: Sorry, kiddo. It's this... weird... re-occuring dream I'm having. It's keeping me awake.
Sarah: Ooh! Is there a guy in it? Is he hot?
Ashley: There's no guy! ... There's a boy. This tiny little guy, not even eight years old. I've never met him, or even seen him, but he's there.
Sarah: Well, you must of met him from some place. And he probably left a pretty big impression if you're repeatedly having the same dream about him.
Ashley: I don't recall if I have met him, and they aren't the same dream... per se, the fact that remains the same is the kid is there and everytime I see him, he's in some kind of trouble.
Sarah: You wanna tell me his name, or something?
Ashley: If I had a name to give you, I would. But no, I recall asking, but each time the answer gets muddled. Anyway, when these dreams started, the boy was always in some sort of danger, or something because he was scared out of his mind. First saw him in some place, I don't know exactly where, but it was damned-near pitch black. And he was being surrounded by faceless... things.
Sarah: That sounds a little creepy, sis.
Ashley: Yeah, I know. But regardless, these things look like their about to swoop the kid and so I charged in, because protecting the child was the right thing to do. And...
Sarah: And... what?
Ashley: That's it. I shield the child, holding the brat close and just when he seemed to relax, the dream ended.
Sarah: Ok, that's not freakish in the least.
Ashley: I said it was strange.
Sarah: So, you've been having this one dream about protecting some kid you don't even know from scary monsters over and over?
Ashley: Yes... no, not exactly. Each time I've had the dream, small things, really tiny details are different. Maybe the colour of the kid's shirt. Or the smell, but it's like my head's going round and round in circles peeling away more details of the scene. And each time, they end a little later.
Sarah: Let me guess, the monsters become less and less scary as it goes on?
Ashley: Yes, actually. And the one I had last night was sweet. Dark maybe, but still sweet.
Sarah: Really?
Ashley: Yeah. Because rather than shielding the kid, I actually gave him a pretty big hug, and when I pulled away, I stared straight into his eyes. They were one of the most beautiful shades of blue I have ever seen. I know a few people with blue eyes, but not very many had such a magnificant hue of blue.
Sarah: And then what happened?
Ashley: He smiled and asked if I wanted to play.
Sarah: ... and then...?
Ashley: And then... someone woke me up with a mug off fresh coffee.
Sarah: ... Wow... that's seriously -
Ashley: Strange? Bizarre? creepifiying?
Sarah: I'm just wondering if there's a name for whats wrong with you.
Ashley: Oh, grow up!
Sarah: Heh - I'm just fooling you, Ashie. Don't take it personally.
Ashley: I can hurt you.
Sarah: I'd love to see you try!
Ashley: Come here, you little-!
Sarah: Gonna have to do better than that, slow-poke!
Ok, so not 'kid!Shepard' but close enough.

Think you can go into a part II for Shepley, there's some potential. Guess Ash should realize at some point the "blue eyes" are the same she used to gaze into when talking to Shepard.
Also nice touch, but a bit too awkward, is something I call "joint dreams". Dreams of two different people being connected somehow so they basically dream the same dream but from different PoVs. Ashley & Shepard could experience such dream one day. It's the human counterpart of mindmelting with an Asari. Less intensive, but still an incredible experience.
Think I read about something like that before.

Ashley doesn't hit me as the type that would go all rebel/rogue/renegade just to shoot up some bad guys. Would she even fight if she wasn't Alliance?

It's been a long day... Random question. What would Shepard and Ash do after ME3 if there was no Alliance? I mean, they couldn't kill bad guys like they used to, and they can't work for the council anymore cause of *spoilerzzz*

Guess Ashley would refuse to fight - or she and Shepard will try to rebuild the Alliance somehow. At least I can see Shepard working his ass off to get the Council together and rebuild the galactic society somehow, and Ashley might follow. Something like that.
Simply can't see Shepard telling the galaxy "screw you, I won't save you again!" - he's a worker through and through. If he has to rebuild the Alliance, he'll do it. And Ash won't stop supporting him, even if she wants to settle down one day.
Your idea?

If it came to that, would she just drop it all like her grandfather? Remember he retired after the Alliance made him push papers.
I guess I just can't see Ashley fighting unless it's for the good side or for survival.

@Data; I guess it could, but I mainly interpret it as a tease, more than a line with an very intentional deeper message.

Okay, maybe she just enjoys it with Shepard. Then there's a question: why is she teasing her CO

For me, it really depends how bad their PTSD is after the war. I know Shepard will most likely never recover completely on his own, not without extensive help and even then that could only do so much.
Ashley - I imagine that she'd be shattered. If every thing she worked for was gone (And god forbid that Shepard is gone too.) I think she'd be too broken to go one. Look at how she dealt with just Shepards death. She was teary-eye, in pain and implied thought of suicide. The Alliance, while being a major part of her problems as a whole, provided a necessary crutch for her to get up and bury her emotions under work until she could face them.

Hey guys, I'm playing ME1 all over again and I've just finished mission on Noveria, and again despite Ash's and Council's protests I've let the Rachni Queen live .. now that ME3 is closing in on us .. It got me thinking .. how cool it would be If the Queen showed at some critical point in a game and managed to save you or better yet .. your LI from a certain death? As much as I would hate to see Ash get hurt I think it would be very cool and dramatic for R-queen to save her .. well just a wild imagination but still a nice idea right?
Also just talked to Ash after the mission and got her legendary line "don't worry Shepard, I'll protect you" .. damn I love her and ME1
I would prefer that decision bite my Shepards in the rear to be honest. It would be a case of ignoring history, the rachni using what she hears you and Benezia discussing then whap! But I don't think that Bioware will go that route ... although with the Critical Failure for those who tried to be with Morinth, they just might.

Well people mature and change. I'm sure Ashley wouldn't mind having a desk job after the whole Reaper war is over, if she survives that is.
Don't think so.
Ash isn't that type. She's too action oriented. If she wanted out of the front lines type of deal... I think she'd go for being some kind of trainer or instructor. Ya know, passing her skills on to others.

She'd be that type is she survives and has a serious injury, say a bullet in the spine, appendage missing, or and eye missing.xxSgt_Reed_24xx wrote...

You can still be a trainer without an eye or with an hand or arm missing. Prosthetics and what not. And surely they have better versions in Mass Effect.
Ashley is not a desk type.

No one seems liek they're a desk type in their twenties. Ashley's in her wenties so she still full of energy and enthusiam for ground combat but as i said she can mature and mellow out in her alter years provided she survives the reaper war. Anyone can become a desk type. Anyone.xxSgt_Reed_24xx wrote...
