Already have an account. Now here is why I'm off-put by the new look. I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps. The original look for Ashley Williams was a professional, yet attractive look. The new look...

Uniform regulations are the same regardless of whether one is enlisted or an officer. Out of uniform, officers are often expected to dress in a more professional manner than enlisted(an enlisted man or woman could get away with t-shirts and jeans, however officers are expected to wear polo shirts and the like.) In a dress uniform, women are allowed to wear makeup, however, it must be natural in appearance, and not heavily applied. The smoky eye shadow and high gloss lips do not fit that description. In camouflage, BDUs, whatever you wish to call them, battle uniform regs say NO MAKEUP.

Hair length if left down is restricted to "just above the collar." Most units will translate this as barely brushing it at maximum length. Unless she was out of uniform when the call went out(which is possible) she does not appear to be following current regs when she is seen in the demo.

That being said, regs could be more relaxed in this military. I do have a few questions though. Why is she dressed differently than every other officer there? And why does Alenko's response to a female Shepard seem so much more respectful than her response to male Shepard? The gut reaction here is a Marine one - women dressed and made-up like that were the ones that were trying to sleep there way to the top.

Kinda seems like she's been objectified into just another video game sex toy, from her appearance and demeanor.

In any case, don't jump down Sev's throat just because of me balking at the new look.

good of you to post, welcome to the thread.Posted Image

We "jumped down his throat" because he called Ashley a hooker. I dare say going into any female characters thread and calling her a hooker would garner the same reaction.

Ashley is not going to follow the current regulations because she lives in a worl 174 years in teh future where you can jumpa cross the galaxy, which is light years away, in a matter of seconds thanks to machines left by a sentient race of starships. It's also a universe where due to an undiscovered element we have biotics which we don't have now.

also Ashley's now a spectre. which means despite her rank of Lt. Commander she's above the rank and file and now bound by dress code regulations, so in essence, she can wear whatever she wants in and out of combat and no one can tell her to change.Posted Image

Sevrun: Hey, bud, I didn't shot you down. And technically, your wife ... (wait, what?!) ... didn't call our Ash a "hooker". ;)

So now cut of that chatter and admire Lieutenant Commander Ashley Madeline Williams (S1), XO of the SSV Normandy SR2 and lover of a g*ddamn living legend. That's an order!:lol::lol:

What's wrong with him being married?  No, I didn't call her a hooker.  I called her a walking matress if you must know.  Or rather the look, not Ash herself.  I think the character deserves a lot of respect, as she's as gung-ho about being Alliance as I was about being a Marine before my shoulder was messed up.  It's just very hard to get out of the mind-set that was drilled into us about those regulations.  :P

Why Ash can wear her hair open ...

Shepard: I like your new hairstyle. It's. ... perfect. But it's also against the regs.
Ashley: Yeah, I heard that before. "Too long", "distracts you in a firefight" - all that sh*t. I'm fine, okay?
Shepard: Wait, no. You don't understand - I like it. Just what did you do to keep it that way?
Ashley: Oh that. Now, wasn't that complicated - being a hero of the Battle of the Citadel means something. Not to forget all the jobs I did in the past two years. Hackett respected my wish.
Shepard: I'm glad Hackett knows what's right. You look beautiful with open hair.
Ashley: *smiles* Mission accomplished!

--------
@ the loving couple here:
Never did my job in the army. You know ... shooting guys isn't my thing  at least not R/L.
However, I try to understand your mindsets.

And Ash is neither a hooker / matress nor she looks like one. C'mon ... real hookers do look a lot different. And no, I'm not speaking of experience :?

My wife says the exact same thing I did and she's held up as a champion of all that is good and cuddly while I get cast down as the anti-Ash blasphemer!

LMFAO

no I'm not upset by it, I really do find it hilarious.

Wait she's your wife? Ohh now I get it Posted Image. Wasn't trying to cast you down btw, but yeah the way one puts things, tends to evoke a reply in similair fashion. Wasn't judging you, just what you wrote.

Anyway, back to Ash.

Shepard: Look Alenko I know what you're trying to do, but I saw her first!
Kaidan: Sorry Maâm, but you can't just claim her.
Shepard: I order you to stand down Lieutenant!
Kaidan: Gonna have to disobey Shepard, in fact I'm going to go out with her the next time on the Citadel.
Shepard: You did not! Oh no, you're out of line!
Kaidan: I did and we'll have pancakes for dinner, so there.
Shepard: Pancakes! You're willing to stoop that low huh? Well it's on Alenko, get ready for some low blows!
Ashley: *facepalm*

Let's just leave it at this: The Marine in me balks at the new look. The logical part of me says that regs will be much different in the future. Still hair up in combat is a logical thing - I never thought people should be able to wear it in such a way that it could get in their face(which includes cutting it short enough to be over the collar - it would still get in your eyes.) I also think she was beautiful before the changes.

Exactly.
Keep in mind most players of ME3 are still too young for military duty. Others never went to army 'cause of different reasons. In my case it's the one I can't shoot people. And it was the g*ddamn best decision I ever did - otherwise I would have gotten orders to go to Afghanistan. <_<
Three of my closest friends were there. All made it, but not unharmed (psychological).

Yeah, but the "Marine" in you isn't playing the game. That's you, the Civilian *g*

Whatever. Ash can be used with a helmet (not sure if individual or for the whole squad) so that open hair shouldn't bother you anymore. If Ash wants to wear her hair open in non-combat duty or off-duty, it's okay.
I once heard rumors you even can change hairstyles in the game, but I doubt that feature will be in the game since most characters don't have hair at all. And Ash is technically the only squadmate with long hair. Why adding a feature like that for Ashley exclusively?

Seeing as how she doesn't become a spectre until after the beginning of the game, her attire is incosistent with everyone else in the Alliance(at least from what we've seen.) Plus, even if she were a spectre, I would expect the council to have their specres look professional, and not dolled up.

I think it's just plain BAD tactically I get in close combat with someone with teased hair and I'm grabbing a handful and haulin em around like a ragdoll until I can bash their face into a wall or break the neck.

I am aware that the game mechanics don't allow for that at the moment, but that's just my combat assessment.

Who's to say she doesn't look professional in the eyes of a 22nd century person? That her outfit is inconsistant with the rest of the Alliance outfits we've seen would probably mean it'll stand out for the 10-15 seconds you actually see her in an Alliance base, just like Vega. Surely we can live with that.

And don't get me wrong I'd love to have a bun option fow when she's in combat, but she has a helmet if it turns out to be bothersome.

Frankly, this whole thing kinda makes me giggle. PseudoEthnic, your point is pretty much what I was trying to get at. Unless of course she was getting all dolled up for a hot date... which leads to me giggling about pancakes for dinner.

Vega doesn't stand out to me at all, other than the fact that he's trailing after Shep like a puppy dog with Hero sickness.  If he wasn't on duty his attire is far more consistent with a Marine than Ash's.

I've seen Marines with neck tattoos. People look at them kinda funny, but don't generally say anything. Most of them got those tattoos before they entered service. I'd like the bun option, but I sincerely doubt hairstyles for everyone is a big concern for the devs. I'll just live with it.

Maybe the neck tattoo, but from people I know, it's okay to have a tattoo so long as it's not over the top or disrespectful.

@Ikina; Maybe she was faking to be happy about seeing Shepard again because she felt guilty, since she was actually dating...Vega? That'd be awkward enough. :P

@Sevrun; That's true, but again, is that how someone in the 22nd century would think about it, since to be fair, is Ashley really trying to ''sell'' her good looks more than Vega?
He's the only one who wears a thin, tight shirt like that, that we could see. From my perspective (which is without military experience) it's not.

lmao  That would be hilarious.  She did kind of have a guilty look on her face when she first saw him.

As for the thin shirt.  That's the muscle-builder look that some Marines go for.  I always rolled my eyes at them.

We all wear T-shirts like that underneath the outer layer of the uniform. So when off duty you can find a lot of us still wearing the boots/trousers and the undershirt much like his. Ashley's outfit matches no uniform at all from what I saw of the Alliance HQ there.
n an unrelated note there appeared to be a difference between Marine uniforms and Fleet (Navy) uniforms. Little curious about that as well.

@Ikina; Hehe
Vega: You know the Commander?
Ashley: *thoughts* Sh!t he knows the Commander! What now? Lie? Truth..Got to make it seem like we've never had something...Lord, as long as I don't have to work with both of them together any time in the future..*/thoughts*
Ashley: I used too.

I'm way too tired, better hit the bed. G'night all. (Also: I shouldn't have mentioned pancakes...now I'm getting hungry again :P)

I believe any form of tattoo on the neck disqualifies you, or at least it used to. I don't have a problem with that tattoo, just like I don't have a problem with some makeup.

Waffle house...pizza...You're making me jealous! Torn between sleeping and eating now, maybe I'll try sleep and a really good breakfast in the morning first. Posted Image

@Sev; That's a valid point, I guess no one wears Ashley's outfit as an underlayer. Posted Image
Well in the end, it's just a casual outfit, she has armour for combat at least and once on the Normandy it'll be less out of place perhaps since every playable character wears a unique oufit. On that note..I'm really going to bed!

Before I fall in sleep in front of a monitor, sincezzz....
