I've always just kind of figured that in the game, in this fictional universe there is definitely an element of realism, but not so much that I'm bothered by the odd ranking system in the military or someone saluting with the wrong hand or even a female soldier's hair being down. It's different. All of it, either because they just decided to make it that way or because they didn't really know how it is in real life specifically. Either way I feel like it works.
If they were directly making a game about 2012 American military they would need to be accurate in all the ways. But this is kind of their own world they've created so we're supposed to just assume all of this is normal.
There's nothing wrong with "Things are different in the future" as such. Weird ranking systems, saluting wit hthis hand or that. But it needs to be different in a consistent manner. Weird ranking systems, saluting with this hand or that, fine. As long as they demonstrate that it's normal, it's, well, normal.
Ash's uniform, however, is clearly not normal. There's nothing even close to it in All of Alliance headquarters or the previous two games. Even Kaidan's outfit is reminiscient of the t shirt and cargo pants of the first game. What makes Ash the "special snowflake?" that she wins a bright superhero?
As far as Ashley's uniform goes, compared to Alenko's it does look a little out of place, but really I think that's the coloring. I wonder why they made her blue more vibrant than the darker tones of the actual Alliance uniforms. Kaidan also looked far more casual than Ashley. She's even wearing gloves (which I think is a little weird tbh). They could have at least put Kaidan in his dress uniform or something, something like Anderson's jacket. I'm not complaining but seeing the two side by side does make me wonder.
I obviously fell more strongly than you do on this. But it's good to see others notice the oddness.
As for regs and the outfit, no one knows anything about anything, but I think it's safe to assume that within the confines of this universe if what Ashley was wearing was against regulations in any way she probably wouldn't be wearing it. Taking all of our own personal opinions aside - the game designers have determined that this particular outfit is most definitely within the standard look of things.
Yeah, I mean the rest is all speculation until the game comes out so we can't really say.
When you get down to it, it's there because developers put it there. It's on them to provide in-universe reasons to justify why they did so. If the outfit goes without comment in ME3, I'm gonna be even more disappointed in Bioware's decision than I already am.
