That, and he's also scared of relapsing too. He doesn't want to wreak his relationship with Ashley with alcohol or drug abuse...
Know what? It's kinda funny you give your Shepard such weakness - especially since it's a matter of determination. Shepard is depicted as one of the MOST determined persons in mankind's (and maybe even galaxy's) history - and still he doesn't know if he can keep his hands away from drugs and alcohol.
That's amazing because it kinda represents how BROKEN your Shepard really is.
Which also means Ashley will have a hell of a work to keep Shepard sane & alive. Guess that's why I want PAS ... two women caring for Shepard, both keeping him sane & sober. That plus the sheer sexiness

Yes, we do. And we leaked script readers also know that one time Shepard finds Ashley (spoiler ->) drunk when she's off duty, which is hilarous but also sadMilan92 wrote...
Talking about bars. Did you folks know that we can go on a date with Ash in ME 3?

I know, it's so cute! I can just imagine the sh!t-eating grin on Shep's face. That, or he'll just be standing there, arms folded, wondering how to assist in the dear lady's unfortunate circumstance...
... Ah, what the hell am I say. My Shepard would have a freakin' blast!
@Data.
Yeah, thats kind of the point. My Shepard is BROKEN utterly. That's why he's doing what he's doing. He doesn't care about himself or his life anymore. He just wants to do the job... and getting the girl somehow managed to worm it's way onto his to-do list right at the top, just under 'Save the 'verse from it's own stupidity'.

Funny. Your Shepard is pretty much like I was a while ago in my "depressive state". Minus drug abuse. I don't do sh*t.
However, since Ashley became part of your Shepard's life, he definitely should value it a tad more. After all now he has a reason to live. If it's not for himself, he should live for Ashley. So she's the beacon of his life, she gives him hope - all that stuff - so he might heal one day.
It's a quite common but powerful trope.
@ Spoiler:
Yup, very cute - and I can imagine pretty much the same like Aurora.

@ Spoiler
I think the gentlemenly thing to do for Ashley, is to either find her some water, get her an icepack or just drag her to Chakwas for a painkiller.
Even my sadistic ****** Shepard would be nice to her after joking around a bit. Drag her to some dark bunk, tuck her in and order her to sleep it off.

I doubt my Shepard will ever fully heal from the loss he feels, in fact with the war it'll get worse. But you are right, Ash is the reason he fights now.
Hmmm ... guess it's your headcanon ^^
My Shepard doesn't come with too much baggage before ME1 and therefore any damage done to him (causing his breakdown in LotSB and most likely in ME3) is a direct result of events in the series.
He needs Ashley to stay sane and don't give up since she's the very face why he's fighting for the entire galaxy. Without her, he simply would fight for a name- and faceless crowd. Shep would do it, but may fail at a certain point (that's the point where Ash is needed to keep him going).
Your Shepard -IS- broken from the beginning and every kick in his balls by the galaxy breaks him more. So I guess your Shep will face an even worse breakdown and ONLY Ash might bring him back. However, I can imagine her being important enough to Shepard to heal this broken part of himself. It may take years, decades to fix him, but it's possible in my eyes. Guess he'll be alright once he found a family with Ash ... if he's a better dad than his father, of course

He stayed faithful to Ash and won't give up. He's worried about The Reapers but with Ash and his team on his side, we can't lose.

For people who have read the leaks: are you happy with Ashley's romance? I am avoiding details, just trying to pick up peoples reactions and impressions.
(btw thanks folks for policing spoilers - those of us who are avoiding them really appreciate it

@spoiler - I did not read it but judging from everyone's reaction it sounds interesting! Seems like ME3 character interactions are a step up from what we had before.

I haven't readed the script, but I can assure you that the romance is gonna be good. Alot of people who readed the script have said that.

Happy would be an understatement. <_<
I'm going to effing enjoy it and j**z my p*nts by excitement, so to speak!
Nah, seriously: it's going to be decent. From what I can see so far, Ashley's romance alone has more dialogue lines than any interaction and banter with Ash in ME1. And it's all quality stuff, so it comes with quanitity AND quality.
