Yeah, it comes to the survival of you and your squad on Insanity, I tend to pick the ones with the best health and shields unless it's a situation where you have to tag along a specific squadmate. On Geth missions, I will not hesitate to tag Tali along because hacking Geth makes it much more easier, especially when a Geth Prime is hacked.

Doesn't make sense for me too - my Shepard's an Infiltrator - and a darn fine sniper. If you pick Garrus and Ashley with an Infiltrator!Shep, you have three snipers on the field - and nothing to do. Ash is a crackshot. It feels as if she's even better than Garrus ... at least in the game.

I'm always taking Ash on my mission with EDI. Sometimes with Vega, as well. I gave her Black Widow and I fully developed her Marksman ability. And gotta say, she's a killing machine on the battle field. With Black Widow and Marksman Ash can take down Nemezis/Phantom with a single shot on insanity
Tbh, I don't need any biotics to help. I prefer tech skills and lot of firepower.

Joker: .... Boy, he's in for a surprise.
EDI: You are still insane, Jeff. Shepard and Williams will not be very pleased when they discover your actions.
Joker: Yeah... I'm not so confident that this was a good idea.
EDI: Data suggests it was not.
Joker: You're really helping me out, EDI.
EDI: This body is physically capable of escaping at speeds that far suprass an average human. If the worst scenario should come to pass, I could carry you and escape.
Joker: .... Tempting EDI, very Tempting. But I'll just wait. See how Shepard and Ash react, if it's bad... then I'll take you up on that.

Yeah, that's Liara's downside. Her biotics on the other hand are definitely useful in-game, and I'm growing on biotics more and more now that I understand the power of warp detonation. Thank you ME3.

Never relied on biotics ... I prefer raw firepower. However, some biotics come in handy. It's just that - do you really want to share firepower for tactical finesse? Sometimes firepower is the only thing that keeps you alive ...

Liara did get taken out a lot for me as well. I kept her behind me at all times if possible. With Garrus, I could just keep him level with me because he can handle himself. On the other hand, it was sometimes useful to use Liara's position to fall back on if things got nasty.

Needless to say, I never had a problem with Ash!

Yeah, that's how I beat the first two games on Insanity. Raw firepower. Hopefully I won't run out of ammo with my M-99 Saber X, M-6 Carnifex X, and Graal Spike Thrower X, and N-7 Hurricane X. That the only downside to classes like soldier. No real powers. (Concussive shot doesn't cut it for me.) However, I equipped myself with carnage and haven't regretted it.

It's like I don't care how I get through the game, just as long as I get through the game.

Ashley: For laughs? Kicks. I don't know how that twisted jackass works.
Shepard: So, it's possible that it might actually be true.
Ashley: But How could it happen if it were - I mean, - I know HOW it happens, it's just that -

Shepard:  - EDI.
EDI: Yes, Shepard.
Shepard: Ash had a scan done yesterday, what were the results?
EDI: I cannot do that Shepard, Doctor-patient -
Ashley: Don't give me that BS, you gave them to Joker, you can damned well give my results to me!
EDI: Yes. Evidence confirms that Lieutenant Commander Williams is approximately one month into pregnancy.
Ashley: ... wha...? *shocked*

Ash will find a way in, Trust me. And My Shepard is a biotic, post lazarus, and a Vanguard to boot. He could always 'charge' through the door.
