Well why do you think that Liara seems to be BW poster girl or that at least that she can't die in any previous games? ../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png
It could just be so she can get to ME3, where she is integral to the plot. Potentially, she could also die in ME3, along with every other character.
In my view, if people wanted then not to survive the triology, it shouldn't prevent Bioware producing expansions for those who 'do' want the story to continue in that way, otherwise those few 'crazy people' (../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png) who don't like Tali end up having the story they want, and it affects everyone else. If they don't want to see Tali survive, that is up to them, but should it affect everyone else?
Hmm, well I think that it's quite easy for BW to make these character specific DLC as if all of those characters would be alive. All they need to do, is mention that these particular DLC wouldn't work in saves, where subject is dead. This would also make it possible to paly that particular DLC in another save, where that character is alive.
And it's same with the question of was that particular character just Shep's friend or LI. If she/he was former then some parts of the DLC story or dialogue are different and if it was latter, then things are again different.
But question is does BW want to make that much effort.
It would be good to hear more views from people on what Bioware should do given the above situation.
Well this is wrong place for this subject if you want wider audience. You would need to post this same topic either to ME3 character and romance or general discussion section. But that thread would quite fast end up full of character hating posts, which is sad.

I see your point. However, I think if we take a slightly different path, we can find a solution to this. Ok, say we 'don't' allow direct control of current NPC's as a rule, but (again, taking the example of an ME expansion for Rannoch), you create your 'own' Quarian, in the same way as you can create your own Shepard. Tali would be an NPC, along with other Quarian characters like Reegar, Xen, Shala, etc. The game would take a certain amount of applicable decisions from an ME3 save game, including the LI status between Tali and Shepard (your Shepard could even have a part in the game as an NPC!). Your task as a (new) Quarian is to re-establish the Quarian civilization, protect them from rogue Geth elements, learn about Rannoch and what has happened over the last 300 years since Geth occupation.
In order to be less specific and gain a wider audience, you could have the expansion split into several sections, where you control a Quarian (Rannoch), a Turian (e.g.where you have a buddy-buddy cop theme with a human where you clean up the galaxy of criminal scum), a Krogan (e.g. a quest to rebuild after the Genophage and re-emergence of the Rachni), etc, and so they all have their own story arcs. This avoids the potential 'limiting' of sales, as there is something for everyone who is interested in some of the characters.
Well something like this could work much better. And you could still get chance to see your favourite characters. Though while this idea does make it less specific, it's still quite narrow view. And awful lot of work to do. You would first need to make it possible for players to create their own characters for every different story arc and then make interesting story for each of them. But if BW would be ready make that effort, it sure could be interesting game.
