Destiny Ascension isn't worth as much as you loose for the damage to the fleet. Other then that it's just dialogue and what the Council looks like.
I orginally let them die but reloaded because (due to my renigade actions it seems) Udina was forcing it to go all Human Empire on it rather then just getting new councellors (even though I nominated Anderson). But I guess even if that happens you still get the replacement council in ME3. I had hoped by changing that, my initial feeling that the old council were completely useless morons would be wrong and they would learn and actually be helpful in the future.
But, they dismissed that claim.
Anyway, heading off topic!
I nominate Tali's legs for the council.
Yeah, if we had known the tactical advantages back then, we would've been able to check. However, we didn't. And there was a distress call of a dreadnought allied to our fleet. It was the morally right thing to do. Sure, we lost, what, eight ships in the process? But as Shepard stated, there were less men and women on them than on the dreadnought, not to mention a symbol of the galactic powers and three high official representatives would have been gone. In my eyes, if humanity would've had any chance to show that they can see something through without stabbing their allies in the process, we had to save it. So I did. Didn't think twice about it, either. And I know Tali approved back then. However, as far as I remember it, it was a matter of whom I took to the mission. Anyway, she approved.
Also, in the end all allied forces are either destroyed or stranded, doomed to die on the smoldering rock formerly known as Earth. So what did it matter if you had 100 points more or less to ignore?
And I will not approve of Tali's legs on the council unless her thighs and her voice are invited, too!
