What is irc?

Basically a chat room. But you usually need an IRC client to connect to it. Kinda retro, but still popular amongst nerdier communities and we would certainly count as one of those.

Not technically. The tali variable is the love your partner has for tali. Yours is implied and insignificant to this equation unless Tali becomes real.

In this way, if they do not love tali, your love for them is defaulted to 0. If they do it's multiplied by 1 and comes out as normal.

Sounds scary...

It's quite simple. Looks are rooted as to reduce their impact and additive so that love can be formed without them. The personality portion of the equation is heightened by the square and exemplified. The third portion takes into account how affection and loyalty can be critical as time increases. If the affection/loyalty turns out to be negative than the impact is increased as time increases, causing a quickly unstable relationship.

And everything is divided through by laziness (which cannot equal 0) because if you don't care enough to put the effort in then love shrinks.
