Yeah, she would have gone to take care of her stuff. Plus as I think on it if they offered her the admiralty then she went to secure support for Shep too. Smart girl that Miss Vas Normandy.

Yeah, that's what I took from it. As annoying as having to find her all over again may be, it comes from her devotion to her people and practicality (doing something useful instead of waiting for Shepard to get out).
Which makes the conversation at the end of Rannoch all the more meaningful to me

I think it's fair to say that for the most part he was forcibly cut off. James said it best on Mars "Shepard couldn't have had contact with Cerberus, they were watching him too closely". Liara does lament that she didn't come see you...but at the time she was being contracted by the Alliance. They needed her abilities. So arranging some visits wouldn't have been hard.
I rather wonder how open the alliance would react to allowing aliens to contact Shepard.
At least, them refusing to allow people contact with Shepard would be the only thing that makes sense in the context of the game. Because based on when you meet people not a single one of these "friends" even bothered to give you a buzz on the extranet.
There's no "Shepard, I'm glad we were able to keep in contact while you were incarcerated, but I must admit seeing you in person brings me far more relief". So if absolutely NOBODY contacting you then...well...I've got to assume the alliance cut him off. Perhaps to make him feel more alone and ammiable to future requests from the alliance. Like "we're all you've got Shepard...those friends, your squad...they've abandoned you." But the reapers interupted that.
...Well that's how I look at it, anyway.

Especially so in ME2, when it's a really major thing (dying and being brought back to life), but it's only used as a means to explain the two year time gap. Apart from that, Shepard just shrugs it off and barely even mentions it.
By comparison, it took Spock an entire movie to find himself again, and Buffy needed more than half a season to recover from being brought back to life.

They had him under house arrest it seems. The dude could not even access any extranet stuff it seems. So it is safe to assume he was incommunicado for a while. At least that is how I took it and why I did not fault anyone. Doesn't Miranda make a comment to that effect?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there was also a mention of Thane and a few other old friends who tried to get into contact but it never went through. Tali probably had one last talk with Shepard before he was detained. My guess would be that they talked about their duties to their people. I'd also assume there would be a promise to keep in contact but that apparently didn't happen so well.

Mass Effect seems to suffer from a strange need to reintroduce everyone in every game. They can't just keep the status quo, they seem to have to come up with a reason for Shepard to have been out of the loop for a while so he can meet everyone all over again (whether it's death or incarceration). That bugged me at the start of ME2, and it bugs me at the start of ME3.
It's because they want new people to get sucked in. So they can't just do a simple continuation. It's a bit of a paradox regarding a game like this which is all about building up the canon over time.

That's the thing though. I'd argue that the overwhelming majority of Mass Effect players are those that have started from the first in the trilogy. I know there's always newcomers but in my opinion, they shouldn't cater to new players, they should cater towards the loyal fans who would end up backing Bioware regardless of what they did(until...well, the ending fiasco

Yeah, I found I spent the first half of both ME2 and ME3 going "damn can't wait till i finally rebuild my old team"
I think its partially a gameplay thing too (books continue with old characters immediately all the time). Like, that way they can be slowly given to you as opposed to all dropped at once.

I've griped about it before, but I'll say it again just to contribute: Spending 2/3 of ME2 AND 3 trying to get Tali back was way more annoying than it should have been. >.<
Edit:
Hah, not this time! For once, I will actually post a top pic!

They certainly proved that right!
ME2 isn't too bad since I tend to do all the recruitment missions first, so Tali is around for most of the game.
EDIT: Nice pic, Ralix!

According to Liara in LotSB, Tali had feelings for shep even in ME1 but never said anything. That actually made me a little sad, knowing that his death probably crushed her emotionally and she might have felt guilty never telling him how she really felt.

Yeah, I could understand it in 2 considering there was a 2 year gap. But from 2 to 3? Nothing major happened to warrant ABSOLUTELY NO CONTACT between Shepard and his team. I want to say even Miranda mentioned something about being able to get in contact with Shepard if she really wanted or something like that. Just...meh.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed ME3, but 90% of the time my thoughts were, "I hope my old team's okay, especially Tali. I wonder if Garrus is doing alright. Is Thane still around?" Etc. Until I started seeing old friends it eased up. But Tali was so late into the game. Didn't feel as great without her. Then again, when she finally showed up I was like, "YES! FINALLY!" Rekindled the romance SO fast. Ever since getting her onto the team, I brought her everywhere. Amazing how such a well written character has such an effect though.

True enough, but whenever i see the normandy explode in ME2 w/ shep getting spaced i just imagine tali sitting in an escape pod seeing the man she loved die with this music playing in the background:

At least they got to make up for lost time. I mean, we don't know how long it actually was between Arrival and Shep getting taken into custody. My Shep was going to turn himself in, but Hackett (IIRC) said he'd make sure the red tape bought me some time. So yeah, they could have had a few days, maybe weeks. Maybe even months, if Hackett had enough pull... XD
Plus, Tali has apparently adapted to Shepard, remember?

Interesting that you guys bring up Tali's feelings for Shepard in ME1. There's a fanfic letter floating around (I remember seeing it here) that essentially describes Tali's reaction to Shepard dying on the original Normandy and her declaration of love for him, all under the assumption that he'd never receive the letter.
I would have loved to see such a conversation unfold in the game, a description of that very moment from Tali's perspective in a private conversation, as well an expression of her true feelings which she ultimately suppressed on Freedom's Progress.
