hmmm like a holographic porjection whenver they want to use it? If it's in their skin I can see that they would be able to control when it appears and disapears.

They disappear because they're made of ectoplasm. The microship creates a vaccuum that sucks them back inside your body.

Where does the "solid object" come from though? generated through the omni-tool i guess?

the blade gets forged by extremly high temperatures and some tech materiel every time u use it. It is like a still burning sword, which is that thin, that  it vaporize instantly by cooling.
