Ah, I still believe that Tali was a major accident. Garrus, however, obviously wasn't, but both characters evolved vastly from Game 1 to Game 2, as if they were...learning how good a base they had built with them. Also the reason they added the romances. The first game, and I just played it in the past days, giving ME3 a complete cold shoulder for days now, was...quite simpler. The romances were basically too easy, "mit der Tür ins Haus fallen", falling into the house with the door, is a German saying and it befits the romances there. It gets much more realistic the second time. And by the third, they become exceptionally interesting. Which is why I cannot understand how they ruined the franchise in the end. Tali alone could've been a reason for many to return to the game, even if it was playing another character, meeting her adopted daughter or something.
And yes, maybe Obsidian lacks a little on the character development stage and makes it a bit too superficial to mate with people, but then again, we're talking post-apocalyptica here, basically the world after the reapers. Life is shortened already, the average life expectancy can't be higher than 30 anymore. And even that is high, 200 years after, in the years directly after, it must've been a record low. You have less time, and thus you ...get to the point quicker. Sure, you could put more detail into some characters still, but they worked out the surrounding to such a detail, and the main character, as well. Plus, they give you a world free to navigate, whilst we don't even get the fridge on rollerskates anymore in ME3. Basically...I believe the one can learn from the other, but I give Obsidian a lead for they know story.
And yes, ME2 was the best - we were outlaws, the graphics improved vastly, Tali was there from the start and finally romancable, and we could win the day in the end and get the nods from our complete crew for a job well done. ME3 started with bombing the world back to the stone age, a lot of diplomacy, Tali's somewhere in the back third of the game, and in the end you feel like you helped dooming everybody. So, yeah. Worse than ME1 in many ways.
