I could swear I remember something from the concept artists about the veils suggesting not only the "virgin mary" thing, but also that it was supposed to imply flowing hair. Can't remember where I read it though.

I GOT DIS (flowing hair, hair gets cut)
AT 5:30

VIRGIN MARY AT 5:45

Again, i'm not contesting that quarians have hair. Canon says they do, and thats fine, even though my canon does not. What i'm saying is that quarians don't have LONG HAIR. They might grow their hair out to 10 feet after a year on rannoch, but they have it short as hell in their suits if they have any. Long hair would be an absolute nightmare in an environmental suit. So I outright reject the assertion that quarians keep their hair long even while in the suits. Because screw canon, I'm not that good at suspension of disbelief.

Again, we're applying current knowledge of space suit design to something from science fiction. We don't know the exact advancements of their suits. Thus, our reference points are invalid.  That's  how you increase your suspension of disbelief.

Perhaps she's just stubborn, likes her hair long, and ties it in ponytail, bun, braids, or any other means of reducing its volume.

Maybe she grew it long because she saw many human women had long hair, so she thought Shepard would like it?

The helmet is right against the head, or knocking would occur. Knocking is absolutely unacceptable for long term use, and since we know that the whole envirosuit is pretty flexible, we know that the helmet is flush against the head. There is no other possibility without invoking retarded amounts of space magic. I refuse to do so.

Since we know that the helmet is tight, we know that anything coming out of the head would be compressed between the skin of the head and the inner wall of the helmet, which is very likely a soft foamlike material.

We know that mammalian hair stops growing and falls out after prolonged time in sitations such as this. We know without a doubt that quarians do not have long hair that is anything similar to humans. It is short, shaved or otherwise removed, or they don't have anything like human hair. No way around it.

I don't think the change in hood styling needs to coincide with the hair change. It's much more likely quarian women have helmets like the men and just wear hoods over it. Having a loose hood like that as an integral part of the sealed environment is just asking for disaster. The designers of ME2 said they used the hood to imply hair, but that doesn't mean it's literally showing their hair.

I think the change in styling is just because Tali chose to wear her hood differently.

But as revan said, it needn't be like human hair at all. It just looks similar.

But mainly because whipping up dozens of new quarian models that are only in the game for 5 mins or so is pretty labor-intensive, and it is much easier to make 2-3 archtypes for each gender, and then just recolor them 50 times. Except for dat main quarian, who gets special treatment. And she deserves it.

I think tali has "hair" like this. Thick, vascular tendrils. Though FAR less in number and in volume that in this picture. I haven't decided weather or not she has a limited ability to move them around. Maybe i'll dream the answer tonight. But this solves the hood on females problem, and is suffficiently different from human hair to warrant some suspension of disbelief about how it works in the suits.

A. Yes, that is a fanart of sarah kerrigan, queen of blades.
B. That is a lot of my tali headcanon, and she is hot, not fugly. Just ignore the slime. That isn't headcanon.

Well, im not gonna lie, staring at these queen of blades pictures creeps me out more than the stuff we talked about last night. Actually, I didn't get creeped out at all about what we talked about last night, it was somewhat pleasurable, but still...

And I'll say it again, what's canon is canon, so you can either deal with it or live in your own personal bubble of denial. You're still trying to apply modern logic and technical reasoning as to why it's not possible, not something as concrete as blatant disregard to the laws of physics ("space magic", which I can think of quite a few more examples in this series that hardly anyone disputes). If the fact that they have hair bothers you so much, I want to know what kind of massive ulcers are forming within your gut from dealing with mass relays and biotics?

*edit* Wait, wait... normal hair is unrealistic and can't possibly exist under a helmet but thick vascular tendrils are awwwriiight? Um....

yeah that is too creepy for use with a tali concept

It's a more creative design than the one bioware came up with. And it's my headcanon. It won't be changing ever.

Unchild, the difference between mass effect technology and the hair problem is not one of degree, but of category. Successful suspension of disbelief about biotics and ME tech requires that you accept element zero, and how it works. That is all. It doesn't ask you to forget the law of conservation of energy, the four forces, or ask you to forget that you have had hair for two decades and KNOW HOW IT WORKS. It introduces a new thing, which is probably impossible, but is perfectly fine for this type of media because it is a new and UNKNOWN element.

Hair is not an unknown element. We know how hair works. We have mastered shampee technology and hairstyling powers, and we understand HAIR. So I can't suspend my disbelief towards something on my own body, but I CAN for something that is out of our experience and does not fly in the face of experience.
