For whatever personal reason, my main thing with the ending isn't the Cathalyst or the coloured ending or the plot holes others percieve, it's the way Shepard dies that's horrible... I wouldn't wish that kind of death to my worst enemy, seriously...

If the LI had been there I would have been fine with it, even if they both end up dying, just don't leave Shepard alone to die with a cold uncaring AI watching and the weight of a galaxy shaking decision on his/her shoulders...

If it has to be like it is, maybe do it somewhat like this:
Control: LI helps you up from the electrical shockwave, you both reach for one handle and begin to disintegrate, you look at each other, as you move in to kiss, you both dissolve -> ending plays as normal...
Destroy: LI hold you as you shoot the vent ->ending plays as normal...
Synthesis: You and your LI embrace and jump in the beam together... -> ending plays as normal...

If you have no LI, well, then the ending plays as it is now, or make it Liara by default that helps you, after all the third flashback is supposed to show you LI, but it's Liara by default, just don't leave Shepard alone there...

It may be cheesy, but at heart I'm a bit of a romantic, so...

Currently looking at 18-20 Chapters in total. But that number is ever changing as ideas grow and contract shrink
