Shepard is waiting for his wife Tali to give birth. The doctor comes in and informs the dad that his quman son was born without torso, arms or legs. The quman is just a head!

But Shepard loves his son and raises him as well as he can, with love and compassion. After 21 years, the quman son is old enough for his first drink. Shepard takes him to the bar and tearfully tells the quman child he is proud of him.

Shepard orders up the biggest, strongest drink for his boy. With all the bar patrons looking on curiously and the bartender shaking his head in disbelief, the quman takes his first sip of alcohol. Swoooop! A torso pops out!

The bar is dead silent; then bursts into a whoop of joy. Shepard, shocked, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant "Take another drink!"

The bartender still shakes his head in dismay. Swoooop! Two arms pops out.

The bar goes wild, but the bartender is clearly disapproving.

Shepard, crying and wailing, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant "Take another drink!" The bartender ignores the whole affair.

By now the quman boy is getting tipsy, and with his new hands he reaches down, grabs his drink and guzzles the last of it. Swoooop! Two legs pop out. The bar is in chaos. Shepard falls to his knees, tearfully joyful.

The quman stands up on his new legs and stumbles to the left... then to the right... right through the front door, into the street, where a truck runs over him and kills him instantly. The bar falls silent. Shepard moans in grief. The bartender sighs and says, "That boy should have quit while he was a head."

This was hilariously wrong. I sat there like, oh god why? But the barender bit had me rolling.

Terror...this chapter was the most uplifting thing thus far in your fic. And knowing you that will be crushed next chapter to raise dramatic tension a bit for more for the finally.

What kind of story would Tali like?

Poetry seems to be in their culture, so I think she would like it. I think storytelling must be in her culture too. With so few luxuries in the fleet, storytelling is one of the great things that can entertain and be totally free. Like the company of friends. But with the suits and confined numbers, storytelling is likely a great way for them to escape. I would imagine they would tell a mixture of extravagent pilgrimage tales, traditional legends from the homeworld and other wild imaginative tales of fantasy and whatever counts as science fiction in a science fiction future. It's possible as well there may be some saucier fiction in there, given their suit isolated lives (though that may just depress them).
