For me, I view Liara as a wise friend that I sometimes resort to, similar to how Captain Picard goes to Guinan whenever he needs advice. Just how Tali sometimes talks to Garrus about things and maybe a few personal matters, I could see myself talking to Liara about Tali among other things. Liara is nowhere near close to Tali, but she does have a unique wisdom that I find fascinating. I wish I could have told Liara more about Tali besides that moment in the shadow broker base, it would have been amazing if I could talk to her in 3 about Tali and wonder what's happened to her. She would be the best person to go-to if I want to find out about things happening in the galaxy.
Yeah, my Shepard considers Liara a good friend too (and feels a bit guilty about breaking up with her, but you know, Tali; I honestly only picked her in one because I wanted to see the romance stuff but couldn't pick Tali). I made it up to her by having a FemShep playthrough who was loyal to Liara all the way through.
It did bother me that Shepard never comments on Tali (or anyone, really) until you find them. Even in ME2 you get to question TIM about your old team and you're given reasons for why you can't go after them immediately. In ME3, nothing. Even after the cryptic message about the quarians on the Spectre terminal, Shepard never tries to look into it until he's told to go see the quarians. Honestly, if I were in his place I'd be like "hey, Liara, you're the shadow broker, right? Why don't you use those resources to find my old team?" the second we got off Mars.
Does anyone at BioWare even remember how in ME1 you could choose which story mission to do after the Citadel, so you could recruit Liara as late/early as you wanted?
On the other hand, having to wait for Tali makes it all the more satisfying when she does show up. I guess you could say the wait was... *puts on sunglasses* ...totally worth it.
