Evening all, I was thinking about game/film languages (I'm learning Elvish from Lord of the Rings) and I was wondering if people had any ideas as to what languages Tali speaks, I personally think she speaks English and Khelish but that's just my thoughts. :)

I was always under the impression that she only speaks Khelish, and that everyone uses translators to understand alien dialects. In that same vein, Garrus would be speaking turian and Liara would be speaking asari.

I thought that to begin with too but now I think she does speak English because:

1. Her translator would surely eliminate most of her accent in the future.

2. When she's drunk she says 'Hey Shepard, wanna drink?', surely her translator would say 'want a or would you like a' instead of wanna.

3. At one point she says 'You've heard me say keelah se'lai?', surely any translator would translate the quarian she speaks instead of Shepard hearing it as what she said.

Just my thoughts, I might be wrong...

Still strikes me as a MAJOR disappointment that they didn't show her face IN-GAME at least once, and I don't mean as a photograph (trying to ignore the fact it's just a Photoshopped stock image).

The scene where she looks out at Rannoch and takes off her mask would have been a perfect spot to show us her face - would have added even more emotional impact.

The cheesy romantic in me wishes that Tali and Shepard shared a kiss or something, anything during that scene. Fine ok I can deal with the face not being shown there but not even a nice little paragon (or renegade:devil:) interupt if you romanced her? For shame! D:

Also my dreams have come true! >_<

Hm its unreasonable to think everyone speak english, especially as hardly anyone except the Quarians swap to their own language.

I guess we are just supposed to accept that the translators are a bit weird. Its artistic license.

Yeah I only think Tali speaks English, I don't really know what anyone else speaks, there's never any mention of any other languages...

And I could just as easily be wrong, but I don't think her speaking English would make sense. That would also mean that she would have to be able to speak turian and asari and krogan fluently, because she interacts with those other crew members throughout the games.

As for certain phrases, like keelah se'lai, not translating, I guess that requires a certain suspension of disbelief. It could be that the translator doesn't know how to interpret that, or just because the writers wanted to show us some quarian dialect. :P

The fact that the translator doesn't cut out her accent/turn 'wanna' into 'want a' could just mean that the translator is very advanced. Space magic.

There are multiple reasons why those justifications may not apply. Both in-universe and genre handwaves.

With the first point - a translator would eliminate an accent in the present day. In the future, it's likely that it would instead Woolsey (read - pragmatically adapt and modify) an accent to still sound exotic in some cases.

Second - future translators are going to be more consise, so if she's contracting the Khelish input, the English output would be similarly contracted, to minimise lost meaning.

Third - the very phrase "Keelah se'lai" holds cultural significance. While it literally means "By the homeworld I hope to see someday" it's used in all kinds of other contexts, too. It's much like a name. Think about Miranda. The word means "She who is to be admired" but we call Miranda Miranda. Or Miri, sometimes. As does the translator.

As for the meta meaning: it's just more fun to hear 'dat accent rather than constantly reading subtitles and hearing made-up nonsense (or a made-up language if the dev team really have time)

I see your point, I also find it very annoying that BioWare never give us anything more than a few words of Khelish and no mention at all of other languages, I wish Khelish was a language I could learn, then I would teach Shepard to talk to Tali in her native language...Posted Image

We just need this romance to get as popular as Star Trek. The entire series.
Then, someone might make a canon Khelish dialect, like what was done with the Klingon one. B)

I'd think that species with the right vocal organs would speak laguages, like americans learn spanish in school.

so, Asari, Quarian, maybe Batarians/Krogan,  and humans could feasibly learn each other's languages. Quarians and Asari most of all, Quarians because they spend so much time traveling around on thier pilgrimage, hard not to pick up a language. Asari because they live long enough that they could do it on a whim.

Shep and Tali would probably learn eachother's language anyway, so they don't have to rely on translators.

The Jury is still out on turians. Thier facial structure is avian enough that thier language could be squawks, but they have lips and humanlike tounges.

TOTP. This one is odd, but I can live with it.

I know right, we should start a campaign...Posted Image also that reminds me to learn Klingon, although even for a language geek like me learning French, Spanish and Latin at school as well as Welsh and Elvish at home may well be enough already Posted Image

I'm starting to see Tali in odd places. I saw the character to the far left in this picture and just had to pause the video.

Tali knows a thing or two about infections. The T-Virus would never touch her.

She'd just get allergies to it anyway. It wouldn't thrive at all.
Same with Uroburos, Las Plagas... all of it.

But the best thing to do is get Garrus to be a meatshield to the freaky B.O.W. things. No allergies, no compatibility, nothing.

What we need is a Left 4 Dead-style game in the Mass Effect universe. Garrus, Tali, Liara and Wrex fight their way through the undead hordes of Earth, Rannoch, Thessia, etc. *___*
