Found myself wondering today if Tali would have such a huge fanbase if we'd always known what she looks like under the visor. Was the ability to imagine for ourselves how she looked a big part of her appeal? In fact, even now that we technically 'know' how she looks, a lot of us reject that canon appearance and stick to our own imagination.
I completely agree. Part of the appeal was the mystery. We are able to imagine our individual image of a perfect woman (physically) and place it within her mask. Part of it is the fact that the canon picture is not that detailed and cannot be stared at in game. I liked her canon pic but there was little detail to her face because of the glare. Because of this lackluster reveal, we want her to go back to the way she was, our perfect woman. Nothing wrong with that. Perhaps that is why Bioware made the photo so lacking in detail, to try and retain some of that mystery. If that is the case, I completely disagree with that choice. If you want mystery, don't reveal. If you want to reveal, reveal completely, no holding back.
In any event, yes, the mystery was probably a huge factor.
