In ME1, I was a fan of Tali.  I liked her a lot.  Then, ME2 came along and I thought, "Cool, the character has matured, awesome.  Cool chick turns into cooler chick.  You can romance her, too?  Sweet, why not?"

Then the fandom grew.  Tali's appeal started to slip for me, and not because of the character.

I think the reason Tali threads die is that they tend to go from  "let's speak of Tali and the quarians in intelligent terms and mature speculation" into "Tali gives me a galctic boner! Lol!!!1 Dem hips! I post a pitchur of her butt1! Can't wait til we can bone her on Rannoch in her hous! Yay!!"

Most reasonable people are just going to skim the thread, go, "oh, look, this again," and move on.

See, talking about Tali is remarkably like talking about religion.  There are thoughtful, intelligent people with a genuine interest who can talk calmly and sanely about the object of their devotion.  Unfortunately, to the uninitated, these people look like maybe 5% of Tali's fanbase.

Then there are those who will brook no disagreement from what they have decided is the Truth about Their Tali, and woe betide you if you so much as suggest that they might be taking things a little too far.  These are the Hardcore Talimancers.  Most think these people are nucking futs.

And then...  there are those whose obsession is sadly and pathetically writ plain as they can do nothing but talk about their fanaticism not about the character or the craft it took to bring her to life, but almost solely about how she gives them that "galactak boner!!1Lol".  The general perception is that these folks are either 12, retarded, and have only ever seen or spoken with digital representions of women. Or all three.

Perversely, it fuels a lot of the intense dislike for Tali out there, and the real pity is that it isn't Tali that's the problem - it's her fans.

Ever hear the saying, "it's not Jesus, it's his fanclub I can't stand?"

That is happening here, as it has happened in pretty much every Tali thread.

If you're (not you specifically, the general 'you') going to speculate - speculate - and spare us the fantasizing.  Because that's just creepy and off-putting, and it doesn't help promote Tali-anything. 

I tend to avoid Tali threads - I think a lot of people do, because too often it's like trying to find a seat in some tacky cinema that ocassionally shows the odd porno and isn't surrounded by sticky tissues and sweaty guys in trenchcoats.  This thread was doing alright until recently.

Oh, well, maybe the next one will have some cleaning staff...

If people are letting their enjoyment of a character diminish because of the fandom, that's their own problem.

Most disturbing, more than the fans simply content enough to gush irrationally over a character, are the people so upset and insecure as to insult people over their choice of favorite character in a videogame. Unfortunately, there are a lot of those people on BSN, and they tend to bring down the experience for everyone.
