I agree that Samara is not hate-proof. But for me she was very forgettable. I actually played Mass Effect 3 after a two year lay off from the series and I couldn't think of who the Asari that I had on board was. But when I meet Jacob in the game I actually said "Do I know you from somewhere?" because he was forgettable too. Maybe all this was due to the fact the whole time I was searching for dialogue options that asked "Where's Tali?" but never saw anything like that.

We all did, my friend.  We all did.

Yeah, to be honest, except for Zaeed and Jack, I found the Human and Asari characters utterly forgettable. On Virmire, when Kaiden is talking to Shepard while planning the assault, I spent the first half of the conversation thinking 'Who's this guy?' because I literally had not interacted with him since Eden Prime. Ashley, Jacob and Miranda aren't as forgettable, they're just kinda bland and forgettable. Hell, the only reason I really remembered Ashley when it came time to pick who to kill off was because I accidentally wound up bonestorming her and the ultra-awkward-valley motion capture smiles she does will haunt my dreams until the day I die. (Seriously, the smiling in ME1 is some serious 'PREPARE YOUR ANUS' caliber nightmare fodder)

I remember a lot of that as well.  Although in my first playthrough I went for Liara, once I found that Tali was available in ME 2 I immediately went back and didn't romance either.  To be sure, there were moments in which the human squadmates were more relatable, but they certainly weren't all that interesting, probably in no small part due to the new and more interesting aliens aboard the ship.  Liara, Garrus, Wrex, and Tali all had something to say, whether it was on the mission, their lives, or their pasts, all of which were interesting because we already had a solid grasp on the things that humans experience.

That, and the uncanny valley smiles were never really corrected.  Case in point:

I'd rather have jessie and the companion cube as squaddies than zaeed and vega.

They're better in 2 and 3, at least. Still a little uncomfortable, but it's definitely not on purpose or out of laziness.

But, still...

Whats wrong with Blast Hardcheese (aka Big McLargeHuge, aka Bulk Vanderhuge, aka Flint Ironstag, aka Crush Bonemeal) ?

Because it's a choice between a colourless, generic, unevolving slab and a companion cube. And jessie has more backstory than zaeed.

Okay, I know I said that I don't HATE any of the squadies in ME, but Kaiden and Ashley are the exception. Ashley is horrible to every alien on the ship in ME1, to such an extent that I was genuinely pissed that Shepard couldn't punch her in the face. And Kaiden complains about EVERYTHING in ME3. However, I usually save him, the Only reason being was that he wasn't mean to Wrex or Tali.

I hated James from the start, but he started to grow on me as the game went by. He's kinda like Garrus when you first meet him in 1.

Still, I couldn't help but spend the whole game thinking 'I wonder how much they had to pay Epic for what is clearly a character model from Gears of War.'

That, or if there'd been a scene with him chewing on a cigar, saying 'Hell. It's 'bout time.', I'd have lost my ****.

Kaidan sorta bored me, though for some reason he started to grow on me a bit in ME3. Maybe its because he seems less pissed off and whiny then Ashely about the whole Cerberus thing.

I can't hate any characters in ME anymore. I can't hate legion for being the first geth to kill a quarian, I can't hate ashley for starting off as a xenophobe and then becoming worse of a character when she stops hating aliens, I can't hate vega/jacob for being bland as hell, or allers for having a really creepy face. I can't hate thane for being such a sad-sack with an annoying voice, or allers for losing her vibrator/toothbrush and getting all cranky about it. I can't hate liara for being epically bipolar and the wesley, samara for not wearing real armor and not having any 'humanity'. I can't even hate miranda for watching me sleep and trying to put a mind control device in my head and having way too many daddy issues, even for a bioware character. Damn, I can't hate any of them after bioware brutally violated them in every available orifice. It's just not right.

of course it ended up being TotP

As a side note, what the hell is up with literally every female squadmate in Mass Effect and their daddy issues?

Ashley never talks about anybody besides her dad and sisters, and about how her dad impacted them. I mean, sure, he seems like a solid guy, but dammit, woman.

Liara is all about how she never knew her 'dad', until she does, and then that just leads to more issues.

Miranda is always on about how her dad is a megalomaniac ****.

Jack's always on about how her not-dad dad Cerberus and the Illusive Man ruined her childhood and turned her into a badass biotic.

Samara mixes it up a bit by going on how she's a terrible 'father', and combine her with Morinth, and you get daddy issues supreme.

Tali has daddy issues too, but at least she basically shuts the **** up about them unless they're directly impacting current events, like when he's suddenly gone missing on a ship full of surprise Geth.

Really, Kasumi is the only one not constantly talking about it, and that is literally because you can't have a conversation with her. I'd bet that she's a whole sack of daddy issues too.

Ha, if they'd included Marcus Fenix and the rest of the Gears as War Assets, the Reapers would have been screwed.Image IPB

Well, it's like every bioware character ever has daddy issues. Guys included.
jacob's dad is a sick wannabe baron pervert with his harem of idiot women
wrex killed his dad. nuff said.
garrus has issues with his dad not liking spectres and by the book and junk
Grunt's dad is like 20 krogan dudes. And a couple krogan chicks. And they've all been dead 500 years.
Legion killed a bunch of his metaphorical parents, after they tried to kill him.

The rest of the characters:
thane has son issues, so daddy issues in reverse.
mordin has no familial issues. he's just the guy who re-sterilized the krogan. different issues.
samara has 'must kill daughter NAO' issues. She's one messed up lady. Kind of a bad parent.
Zaeed has too many scars to have family issues. You also can't talk to him.
EDI is a 3? year old AI in a robot. Her issues are you blowing her up before cerberus stole her, now she's dating a cripple.
James is too boring for me to even know what he has going on.
Kaiden is too well-adjusted to have daddy issues. He has 'accidentally killed a dude when I was 12' issues.

Is that everybody? I think between us that's everybody.

Difference is that Tali is not a hooker, or at least not in the ME series.
That is not to say that it hasn't been thought of yet.  Fanfiction can be a scary placeImage IPB

Burn a better one over it then!

And I was only including squadmates. If we include various crew and other characters, the ratio of 'daddy issues' decreases rapidly, but mostly because there is no exposition or character development for them.

Didn't mean to.  I'd take exelsis' advice on that one, lol.  Or brain bleach.

Probably have my next chapter up by this weekend, although it's subject to change.  Trying to get the crew off the Citadel and get Shepard to become a spectre takes a LOT of dialogue.

That's why I avoid fanfiction at all costs. Not that there isn't some great stuff out there, but it's like walking through a nice, grassy field full of landmines. Landmines made of penises. You're just moseying along, enjoying yourself, when suddenly WHAM! Sudden, unwanted bonestorming.

That is the strangest and most accurate analogy I think could ever be used to describe it.  Still, there are quite a few good ones out there, especially in dealing with Tali.

If reading is your thing, many of us have some great stories that won't scar you for life.  My list:

Razor's Edge : The first of Tairis' Deamhan's trilogy; his rendition of ME 2.  All three stories are fantastic, and Tairis is still going strong on his third on in his trilogy.

You Came Back to Me : Our resident BrysonC's story of the aftermath of ME 3.  The fluff and the feels.

Wings of Fire : Bahoogasmif's story of the aftermath of ME 3.  Fluffy and awesome.

Mass effect 3: Perspective Mr.BlazenGlazen's story of the aftermath of ME 3.  More drama, but also some fluff.

For We Are Many : venomRED's rendition of ME 2, and his previous story of what happened during the two years of Shepard's time spent dead is equally gripping.

The Knife and the Turncoat : The continuation of Finding a Way.  Deals with the aftermath of rescuing Tali on Haestrom gone wrong, and how Tali blames herself for hurting Shepard while he struggles with his feelings for her.

There are others (self-promotion Image IPB) that I haven't mentioned here either, but it would probably take a good two weeks to read through all of those stories in one sitting, each excellent in their own ways (and amounting to well over a million words in total).  Read those, and you will certainly be able to avoid the landmines.
