Just checked Ascension and that makes numerous references to Quarians pulling various expression behind the masks, and treats them no differently from any other species. They emote with their expressions, we see it; are told it, and I really don't see why people wouldn't want them to enough to come up with excuses for why they wouldn't without any evidence or irrefutable reason for them to do so.

Additionally, facial expressions are an instinctive mostly unconscious emotional reaction, we have to learn to suppress them, and even then it's impossible to consciously stop them entirely, and give the masks Quarians would never need to learn to suppress them in the first place.

Also from a meta gaming point of view, when they show Talis face, she is going to have emotive facial features, because this is a game made by humans for humans, and we first and foremost use facial expressions to convey emotion, and will be if anything exaggerated to help get it across.

I thought I read somewhere years ago that while an infant will smile instinctively they will stop doing it if they aren't exposed to similar ques by the people around them. I can't imagine there've been many, if any, actual studies into such a thing though, so don't take my word for it.

Do we actually know what the quarians can do with their helmets though? Maybe in private they can make the face-plate transparent or something or maybe there's a HUD type thing that displays the face of the person speaking to them. In any case I'd imagine that Tali, or any quarian, would use body language to show emotion far more than they would facial expressions.

Edit: Damn, I take too long typing these things sometimes...Posted Image

Hm... Well, as one of the more bizarre/creative Tali appearances, it's one I wouldn't mind. Though, as was mentioned, we know she has a nose identical to that of a human's; also, her eyes aren't so wide-set and are narrower from top to bottom.

I kind of like the mandible-like... Uh... Alright, "things" sounds the best here, for their creativity, but I think we have enough humanoid aliens with dangly bits hanging off the back of their heads... Posted Image Turians, Asari, Batarians, Vorcha, and the others have a crest and horns.

Also, it doesn't feel mammalian at all, really. Though she does look a little doe-like, with the wide-set eyes, small nose and dual nose bridge, the... Erm... Dangly bits look quite chittinous (Insectoid, or even arthropod-like). The pallor isn't very fitting, either, unless she's exceptionally cold at the time.

Now, I have a feeling Saphra may take me up on the doesn't-look-mammalian bit, but think about it; I was completely satisfied when I heard that Salarians were based on salamanders, because damnit, they look like lizards with big, bulgy amphibian eyes and spongy prongs on their heads. Krogan are obviously reptilian; A stubby tail, dinosaur-like feet, toad-like maw filled with small, sharp teeth, all even, no fangs, like a lizard would have. The crest is also pretty exclusive to dinosaurs and reptiles. Asari... Well, the only thing seperating them from humans is the tentacle-heads, and then we learned they were "aquatic"... Yeah, think we know how that is. Though I guess fish *do* have the largest amount of asexual species of the more advanced animal groups. Hanar are big stupid jellyfish.

Turians are one of ones that don't fit nearly as much. Avian/reptilian? The only avian bits that really show in Garrus, to me, are the narrow hips and thin legs, torso that looks like it holds a huge breastbone, and something about his fringe that reminds me of a cockatiel. Also, his eyes are bright and alert, like a bird's. Reptilian? Well, I guess if he has scales. Never heard of a bird or a reptile who had mandibles, though. Faceplates are similar to those of armoured lizards, though. Drell look like frilled lizards, as is depicted by a hilarious comic about Thane that nobody should ever not see.

Volus look like Voles, Elcor look like any grazing earth-mammal. However, Quarians are apparently the "only" other mammalian race; Maybe they weren't counting these minor races, as they're portrayed in ME1? Or they're something else entirely, despite being obviously mammal-based? No idea.

My point being, most of the well-known races have obvious signs of their animal group/species of inspiration. All we know about Quarians is that they have three fingers, and two/three toes, females have wide hips & powerful legs, they have recurved knees, their eyes somehow luminesce, and their eye & nose form & spacing are identical to those of a human. Given that, I'd expect them to look more mammalian. Pointed, cartiledge-style ears, quills or hair, claws. You know the drill.

Err.. So yeah. The picture. I still like it, bonus points for how detailed it is.

I see you like you women w/ those sharp mandibles. Frankly, the mandibles creep me out. They're all sharp. It looks like if one were to make out w/ a Quarian, they're gonna get a mandible straight in the jugular.

Eh, maybe if you were kissing her forehead. They're not mandibles, though. Mandibles help shovel food into the mouth; Those look pretty stationary and far from the mouth to me. They're also not tusks, as tusks are elongated teeth. I was trying to avoid the word "growths", but really, I'm kind of low on options here.

I love the books and Ascension is my favourite part of the supplemental storys, because it does actually give us such a nice detailed look at the greater Quarian populations day to day lives and culture, and paints a much more detailed and realistic picture of much of the universe the games are unable to.

I'm really hoping we'll get to meet the crew of the Ideena properly in ME 3, would be nice to talk to the crew in person if you did the rescue mission in 2. I'd also really like some interaction between Tali and Hendel in particular, seeing as how they've had almost mirrored experiences with being being the only one of their kind on the others species ship. Well Hendel had Gillian of course, but given her age and condition I would have thought he'd have needed to make friends with the Quarians if he wanted an actual conversation.

Indeed. I was disappointed that ME2 didn't follow up on this by actually showing us how quarians live. I had been hoping the Migrant Fleet would be a "hub" in the game.

That first one is at least kind of creative, though I think the mandibles look a little out of place.

Indeed and it actually tries to follow what we have seen through the mask. Although the eyes are too big for what we have seen with tali. I'm just glad someone tried something other than a space elf, yet stayed within what we were shown.

Good on him/her.

It's why in ME1 Wrex says Quarians are tougher than humans and the like. Those scars on his face? Headbutting a Quarian.

What the hell are the appendages on the turians face for? Why the hell do salarians have those horns? What the heck is up with asari tentacles hair? Why in the world do batarians have that wrinkled forhead? Why does that vorcha have black hands?

WHY IS THAT HANAR TOUCHING ME

*ahem*

In all seriousness probably nothing but to look alien. If the artist were to give a description for it, probably used for facial expressions.

Psh that not impressive. Everyone fights krogan and live. Do you know how many die in the course of the ME series alone?

But how many quarians do you see headbutted huh? HUH! HUH!

i like to think of these oddities in character design as an example of the peacock effect.

where a species evolves redundant traits simply for mating purposes.

the salarians horn? same reason reindeers have horns. for teh ladies.
