There's a reason the reprogramming option ends up on the top at the end of the mission, as a paragon option. It's because, from the viewpoint of the writers, Shepard is convinced by Legion's explanation that the re-write is more along the lines of persuasion and less along the lines of mind control. I generally tend to believe the writer's interpretations of events in a storyline match up best with what actually is occuring in the storyline.

Or it could simply be a Paragon choice because you're choosing to spare the Heretics' lives instead of killing them.

I guess that Shepard must be the equivalent of Stalin or something to the geth, given the number of geth processes that he has destroyed. And to address your point, when you start asking that, it becomes more of an issue of how much do you think that the devs really dig into this.  We get to play Supreme Court on the Tali thread! It is up to us to determine the intent of the founding... writers.

But to be on topic: the geth seem to struggle with the idea of identity (reference the scene where you reactivate legion).  thus they are not losing their identity to brainwashing because they never really had one.  Now in support of your arguement Legion does say that all opions are valuable if you tell him that the "heretics judgment sucks".  But like I said before, the geth are still capable of re-concluding this point and the idea could resurface, just minus a weapon that would force all geth to accept a linear path from which there is no divergeance.  Thus if you rewrite them or destroy them the heretics are likely to come back at some point.  At least while the reapers still exist anyways.

It is sometimes hard to interpret what the writers are thinking. Think back to me1 when you have the geth conversation with tali. Shepard pretty much says " its hard to feel sorry for you" and putting her race down for what they attempted to do with the Geth. I hated that dialogue because it seemed forced and I don't like passing judgement on something I don't fully understand.

It was up there with that "the genophage is pretty much the same as the FCW" line you have to say to Wrex.

Damn judgmental paragon choices, had to start over several conversations in my first playthrough cause I would randomly insult people I wanted to be noice to.
I particularly dislike some of the paragon dialogue on the alerie, arguing that taking back the homeworld is a bad idea can be done when Tali isn't in distress. Anyways, how can I resist telling her I'm going to get it for her myself?

Its a loose/loose situation on the alerie when it comes down to your dialogue choices, but really she just found her father dead so I wouldn't think anything you can say would make her feel better.

That conversation occurs before you find her father dead.

OOPS! But overall tali is VERY passionate about her people and I admire that.

This is why we have paragade, so that we can make Tali feel better because we are going to go and kill thousands upon thousands of geth.  Well processes anyways.  That would be a lot of AI's to program just for one section of the game.

Edit: Sorry this one does not know how to insert photos, so I guess its up to some one else to take care of TotP.

Also a Paragade here and yep, that first paragon response in that dialogue is really hard to watch in seeing how upset it gets Tali.... which is why I alway promise her that I'll help her recover her homeworld ^_^ (although I do choose the second paragon response asking if the quarians have looked into finding a new world to colonize, since that seems to flow better in the dialogue after Tali herself questions whether or not recovering the homeworld is worth it).
