I doubt that whichever face they decided for her or quarians in general would be in a pre-me3 material, most likely it was left for the in-game if it was revealed, still, I'm happy that they were thinking light grey for her skin color.

The 5th imo. She's a alien.

Except it looks nothing like what we've allready seen through the mask, we know she has a regularly-placed nose.
Anyways all of these concepts look to be pre-ME1 release.

Was that actually in the book, or are people just assuming from the placeholders in ME1/ME2?

Well the placeholder's nose is clearly visible in ME1, and in certain scenes in ME2. The ascenscion novel does not mention a nose although it does point out that the ears look different, which would make it strange not to mention a missing nose. Has cheekbones and lips as well based off of Ascension.

So they could easily not give quarians a human-style nose, because the placeholder is hardly binding.

The nose could look different sure, but there is still a raised bit of flesh in that location which has the general shape of a nose. They can do what they will with it though.

Everyone else has probably seen this, but it seems everyone at Bioware and Dark Horse like Tali the best as well, seeing as her picture is the one on the spine of the artbook.

Maybe she'll have three nostrils.

doubtful, the nose profile trough the visors is way too noticeable and way too often used with camera angles and lightning in both me1 and 2, to consider it not binding

Why are you obsessed with the number three? :D

Personally I like the other ME1 concept art that has quarians with three eyes.

I could dig that...

I am also okay with this...

Biologically, three wouldn't make much sense as efficiency though. You need two eyes for proper distance and coordination. You need two ears for location to work properly. More could in theory assist in this, but the more you add the less effective each one adds (it goes down exponentially).

In other words, although I would not be upset with three stuff, I don't think it biologically makes much sense.

But... aliens. And yahg. And Rachni.

It's a very alien number.

Anyway, here is the concept I was thinking of:

It's actually part of a series tracing the quarian design until it turns into a geth, but I think this particular one is a superior quarian design.

Although I do like that design, I don't think it fits for reasons of complexities and efficiency.

Why have the tubes be so open and vulnerable on the front? Sure, the back is hardly safe but compared to the front as depicted in that image it's far more safe and practical. The tubes in the front would also get in the way.

Aside from that though, it's a very cool design.

I might have to save it for later. It's giving me ideas.

I also think it would be easier to make a single large faceplate rather than three smaller ones, although with three if one broke it would be easier to replace but the likelihood of death from exposure might make replacing any faceplate not very feasible.

The three eyes are important. Though I think the tubes being visible is a nice touch. Quarians should have a patchwork, ramshackle look to them. They shouldn't look sleek and efficient.

I do agree with the ramshackle look thing, although I think the limits at the time of designing her character forced a more streamlined look. That look then carried over to the rest of the race in ME2. I do think that the male Quarian design was getting closer though. Visable cables and a less smooth look to them.

I do think that the covered cables (that is assuming there are cables under the hood) on the female design could be answered in culture how in how the cloth cover sort of resembles hair. Can't be sure though as that's really digging into it.

But, I do like the design for Tali that they used. I like the alternatives too, but I'm happy with the final project.

A patchwork look is well and nice, but the fact of the matter is that these suits have to be safe. Having random tubes hanging around waiting to get snagged on something is far from ideal. Accidentally getting an errant tube snagged on something is a quick means to rip it off. Sure it fits the nomadic asthetic, but it would be dangerous and immersion breaking. I've lost several headphone cables this way and wouldn't dream of using such a design for something that I require to live.

I know, but in theory...

It would have been nice to see the quarians in ME2 have more varied designs (or varied at all). More color would have been nice.

Right and having big glowing "**** me" lights on your suit is a bad idea too but what are ya' gonna do?

See, I didn't even know about this. My art book arrived today, and I had a very pleasant surprise when I saw the spine for the first time. :D

(though having to refrain from looking into the back of the ME3 section for fear of spoilers won't make the wait any easier =P)

My analysis of the concept art faces:
1: Looks like Jack on "happy pills". No.
2: Good. Humany.
3: Partially desiccated corpse. Unsure.
4: Good. More alieny.
5: Too Salariany/Grey-man like. Brontosaurus bump on upper cranium a tight fit for helmet. No.
6: Human cancer patient.
Floating Whiteface: Looks like a creepy dead baby. Do not want.
Oink: Perfect.

I still think there should be some sort of hair... thing... on their heads though, even if it doesn't make much sense in regards to helmet space. I really like some of those alternate helmet concepts.

I dig the 3rd concept, its the eyes. And piggy tali lol why not. But wait what about the curly tail? Ok sorry couldn't help it. The three eyed concept looks like a sniper from killzone.

The eyes themselves are fine, but the dark rings around them just make it look like they're really sunken in/unhealthy/undead. Were that translated into 3d in game I'm sure it could look better but as line art it's not one of my top choices.
