That's really the cruelest part - and they did it with all of the love interests. They bait you with a happy ending. They let you establish that these people expect to have a future together, then in the last ten minutes it's all taken away for no real reason. And as best I can tell, it's structured this way. You can't designate your LI's as "war assets" who won't be whisked away with the Normandy at the end without (to the best of my knowledge) breaking off the relationship.

This has all been discussed already. The epilogue shows a grandfather and grandson still stuck on that same planet talking about "The Shepard" and hypothetically returning to space one day.

That would take a while.

But on the other hand, how can we be optimistic that the Normandy and its crew can be saved?
And I read in the endings topic that the "teleport bug" is not a bug afterall?

What you call pessimism I call realism.

Of-course it isn't impossible that Tali and Garrus would find a way to survive such as by escaping the colony or finding a source of food, but there is no evidence for it.

The simplest prediction is that they die from starvation.

While I dislike the mere possibility of Tali and Garrus starving to death, the existance of said scenario should not be dismissed out of hand. Its propagation might actually force BioWare to make a definite statement on it, opening the doors for some real discussion of the game endings.
