if i recall her mother died from an airborne virus about 5 years ago (when she first met shepard)
edit: its on the mass effect wiki. Deaths from air filter failures are common on the flotilla (still sad)

Papa Rael took me to the Citadel today! It was so beautiful, even though some volus boshtet was giving us the evil eye the entire time. An Alliance ship had docked to transfer some human trainees to a new vessel. There was this one boy, he had a bunch of commendations attached to his uniform. All his friends were calling him Shepard ....... He was so cute!! He was smart, and funny, and ....... oh keelah! I couldn't get the nerve up to go talk to him though ..... besides, Dad probably wouldn't approve. Anyways, the Rayya will be leaving soon, so I have to get going!
