Hey everyone....I think the Dragon Age series really needs some more creative and interesting player characters.
What do you think about meeting an exceptional (but mysterious) thief - only thing is that he/she requires payment in gold every couple hours of gameplay. If you don't pay him/her or can't afford to pay him/her, he might run away and attack you later in the game. Story wise, the game could do a check against whether or not you have this person in your party and adjust accordingly.
What do you think about having mercenary characters in Dragon Age?

Sounds like it'll be a hassle for balancing. If players can make do just fine with their regular party members, then no one will even bother hiring such a character, making the feature useless.
If they make said character extremely good to be worth the cost in gold, they might run the risk of being 'OP', or being used as a crutch character to make it passed difficult boss fights and other encounters.

'Mercenary' features should be completely parallel to the rest of the game. If you can accomplish the same tasks with a party member that won't ask a penny for his service, then there's absolutely no reason to pay a mercenary.
Now... if you take an approach similar to paying 80 gold pieces to improve the walls of your Keep. Then it might be worthwhile.

Something I would want is not a bunch of characters you meet along the way from different places. Hopefully they continue with exploring other stories besides Wardens', but for this example we'll use Wardens. I'd rather have my team be full of Wardens rather than an apostate, a golem, a qunari, and me being the only Warden.

Would have to be one set payment rather than multiple random payments.
Otherwise it would be a pain in the neck.
Even realistically.
I mean, I've never hired a mercenary for anything, but I would imagine at best you pay half now, half later or something, I highly doubt you'd have the dude on salary.

that how they had mercenaries in fable 1(minus them attack you later part) and even then it wasn't worth it so why would it be better when you already have 3-free-party-members?

hmmm..what if you HAD to hire some type of mercenary to lead you through parts of the deep roads or a different region and the game gives you a few different options
perhaps he/she/it has unique spells or abilities that no one else in the game could use - it would dramatically differentiate how fights went throughout the rest of the game and your companions interactions and feelings about you - at the end of the quest, it was up to you whether or not they stayed on your team

so do you not like any of the standard party members since you seem keen on replacing them with mercs?
