!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!
No off topic please. This is where we discuss the many things that make Thane such a deep character. He is someone with more to him than just a terminal illness. As an assassin, he has been trained to kill since he was just a child. Yet in a number of instances, he shows compassion and mercy. He saves a group of salarians from certain death, he saves his son from following a life like his own. He has a thought provoking philosophy to justify his actions, yet he feels the need to atone and ask for forgiveness after every kill. Ethically intriguing, and increasingly mysterious, Thane shows the many conflicts of one who is searching for their own personal journey in life. As Mordin says, Thane is a complex individual. And Shepard is the one with a chance to help him find himself, and to accompany him to the end. Whenever that may be.
As for Thane's mortality, the majority of fans do not wish for a 'miracle cure.' We hope for something that will complete his character arc, and for something that will provide players with the option of deciding Thane's future. We recognise that, in the context of the Mass Effect universe, there exists technology far beyond our own. It is not unfeasible to find some way to extend Thane's life, or to perhaps sacrifice something else so that Thane may continue to live, and be by Shepard's side when the Reapers are vanquished.
Also, because they need to see a desert.
It has been confirmed by developers that Thane will be a temporary squadmate in Mass Effect 3.Shepard has the option of meeting him on a planet called 'Invictus.' This is the planet description of 'Invictus' from the galaxy map in Mass Effect 2:
Home to dextro-amino-acid-based life, Invictus has temperate zones that were settled by a turian population that initially fell prey to a bewildering number of diseases. Two decades later after its first colony was founded the population had been reduced by half due to fatalities and a large colonist exodus. But when the Primarchs considered ceding the planet to robo-mining interests, the turian statesman Shastina Emperus ambitiously declared that she would start her own colony and double its population within five years. This effort succeeded, largely due to the colonies' location in deserts with a minimal number of pest species. The image of Shastina's triumph in the frontier made for good political theater, and the turian population poured in. The planet's tropical belt still remains largely unexplored as its aggressive organic life still wreaks havoc on turian biology. A "house in an Invictus jungle" is a modern turian phrase for an idea that seems like a good idea but only to the one who came up with it. Invictus's atmosphere is primarily nitrogen and oxygen, and its surface crust varies but has high concentrations of alumina and silver. Because it can support life easily, criminals from throughout the Terminus Systems hide out on Invictus. Its official population is estimated to be half the number of sapients that are actually on the planet.
Also, a leaked source (not necessarily completely confirmed.)
"...Our second quest includes a surprise reveal. We are tasked with finding a group of Hanar scientists that are being held captive on the crime-ridden planet Invictus. The Normandy lands in a local dock where an unexpected, but welcome, Drell assassin greets us. Thane Krios, the companion from Mass Effect 2 is going to be accompanying you on this mission. Thane is suffering from a disease known as 'Kepral's Syndrome,' and the scientists in question are working on a cure for this very sickness... "While Thane is only a temporary companion, you can rest assured that you will feel content with his inclusion."
As to the source of the word 'Invictus,' and the man and the poem behind it... (Thanks to Fiery Pheonix.)

I'm taking a break from this miserable assignment to reiterate an interesting piece of trivia that I mentioned in another thread last night.
We know that Thane will be on Invictus in ME3. We also know that the name Invictus likely refers to the poem by William E. Henley. Out of morbid curiosity, I further researched this topic until I stumbled across something rather intriguing. First, the word Invictus by its lonesome means unconquered or undefeated, and the poem in question is very often regarded as inspirational and borderline defiant. It turns out that the premise of the poem is, in fact, equally inspirational.
Henley wrote Invictus as a representation of his struggle with tuberculosis, which itself is a metastatic lung disease that he developed at a very early age. Which, naturally, leads to the realization that Thane is in a surprisingly similar situation.
So, I believe that Thane's presence on Invictus is anything but a coincidence and, instead, was intended by the writers all along.
