Are you sure about that? An alien chemical compound may produce the same effects but not be the same one found here on earth. This seems to me to smack of the assumption that we have a vastly superior knowledge of chemistry than we actually do. I mean, we didn't even have the same number of elements on the periodic table 30 yrs ago that we do today. It will likely have changed another 30 years from now. Just because a chemical or element isn't found on earth, doesn't mean it doesn't exist somewhere else. And just because our alcohol affects us, it doesn't mean that it will have the same effect on an alien being.
I think they established that with the existence of dextro-dna. turians and quarians can't eat or drink anything that humans do, and vice versa, because they will die. the chemical compounds of such have different effects for each species. Just because humans and drell are both leno-dna dosn't mean that our "alcohols" are going to be the same, or have the same effects.
