AWW poor Kolyat! Image IPB
First, his daddy left him, then his mommy died,  and then SOME people shoot him when you know you had a perfectly good Paragon action to smack him,  shame shame. Image IPB Poor guy...I JUST WANNA HUG HIM!

I'm sorry, Thane... That was hilarious. I can't stop watching Kolyat drop.

Thane's lack of a reaction could be, yeah, an oversight or he's just containing himself. If the latter is the case, he's doing a great, great job at it.

Drunk Thane for ME3!

This.

You people can be so cruel to poor Kolyat.  Shepard did what he/she had to do to keep Kolyat from killing Talid and I think Thane understood that.  It probably hurt Thane to see Shepard hit/shoot his son anyway.
(The animation of it is funny I admit, but it's a sad scene.)

And welcome kirasdream!

If I see Kolyat again... he won't be so lucky to escape with a flesh wound.

Shooting Kolyat isn't the most horrible thing you can do to him. At least it will heal.
Sending him to prison is much worse :P

Please stop.  I've seen the places where comments like that go.

Seriously, Kolyat at least owes Shepard some thanks for keeping him from being sent to prison.

Not letting him go to prison was the best thing. I think it would be a lot harder to repair the relationship with Thane and Kolyat if he ends up in jail.

Community service was the best option. It is a wake up call for Kolyat, opening his eyes to the realities of being a novice assassin, but it also doesn't punish him too harshly, when all he wanted to do, was be closer to his father.

As for Thane's reaction (or lack thereof) although it is his son, he also recognises Shepard's leadership. And never in the game does he question Shepard's orders. (Bearing in mind that this is before any romance, apart from the first flirtation.)

Of course it isn't due to lack of caring. We all know how much Thane cares about Kolyat, even if he didn't go about it as well as he could. he is trying now.

I just realized that I never shot Kolyat.

That and never side with either Legion or Tali.

There is so much to go forward with with Thane's character. I really, really, wish we get to see an improving relationship with Kolyat.

I do believe that whatever my Shep does to Kolyat to disarm him is in his best interest. He tried to be an assassin and well, Shep gave him a welcome call. I have also never had him go to trial even I have some compassion toward him. He is a screwed up kid, his Mom was murdered, his Dad was non existent in his life. He probably would have died in prison or came out someone who would have been shot by someone else. Some people would say, so what? He can get over it. Yeah easier said than done. My girls are screwed up emotionally because both of their fathers walked out on them. These are pieces I am still trying to pick up with them so they don't end up trying to kill someone.

So, as much as I find it hilarious that Kolyat turtles during that shot, I do not laugh when I realize the long hard road that him and Thane have to walk to rebuild a relationship. As painful as it for Kolyat to accept Thane back into his life and then perhaps eventually have to realize Shep is with his father, it is just as painful for Thane to come to terms what kind of pain Kolyat has been in without him. I do love Thane to death and I try to understand why he left Kolyat but as a parent, I find it a bitter pill to swallow to face the fact that he did indeed, walk out on his son. Which is one of the many reasons I do love Thane, he is going to try to work things out no matter how long it takes. That is a testament to who he is. Trying to fix things with Kolyat is going to be hard, the easy way would be to just walk away again.

I liked your entire post but the end, I loved it. Walking away is the easiest thing any of us can do. I know, I am an expert having both done it and seen it done. Its Thane's quote all over again, "Its difficult. All things worth keeping are."

Thane is fighting for that relationship. Any relationship is worth fighting for. There is no relationship (love, friendship, family) where everything goes smoothly. Where there is no conflict. Its how you deal with that conflict that matters. Because in the end, its the person who matters. Its because of that person, that relationship is worth the fight. That person is worth the fight.

Kolyat matters to Thane. He is fighting for the relationship with Kolyat because he loves Kolyat. Kolyat is his son. Thane may not have been the best father but he did his best in providing for Kolyat either through working or keeping him safe.

Its all any of us can do, our best. Sometimes, its not enough. But there are times when its a place to start.

I wonder sometimes what Thane was writing in the letter he was writing to Kolyat. What was he telling him? I hope its something good, like explanations and history not stipulations, rationalizations or utlimatims. I don't think he would do such a thing but Thane is a father. He isn't perfect, he's faliable. Aren't we all?

I loved your post, it puts everything of what I've tried to do and what I still try to do with my girls.  I've always been there but I've made some whopper mistakes.  Their fathers aren't perfect but I'm not a paragon of virtue either.  I always wondered what he he was saying to Kolyat and I felt bad when I went to talk to him and he said, "I am...I had been recording a message for Kolyat."  I know it opens up Shep asking about how things are going but I just felt weird knowing that I interrupted him while he was doing something I felt was more important.  I think I would have felt better if he said, "I had just finished recording message for Kolyat."

Thank you. I had a uncle who I was very close to, he's gone now but he was the one who was what a father should be. He was the one that used to tell me, "...you did your best, its all you can do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but know you did what you could." Even now, years later, I still use his advise and know he did his best for me. That's what matters. He wasn't a paragon of virtue, he did many bad things but at the end of the day, he was a good and loving person. That's what mattered. Our family was the most important part of his life. He did many less than virtuous things but that only made him more human. You have to take the good and bad when you love someone. No one's perfect.

I actually liked interrupting Thane. He seemed, softer, gentler. Vulnerable. You could see how much he loved Kolyat. Sometimes when we love people we fail to show them. When Thane approached Kolyat he walked with his head down, and took the verbal blows Kolyat gave him. He looked into Kolyats eyes when he saw an opening and was able to reconnect with him. I love that scene. The walls come down and they were able to begin again.

As my uncle would say, "Nothing is so bad that it can't be forgiven, if both want it and are willing to let go their pride." Afterall, pride before a fall. Thane let go of his pride and let his son back in. That to me, is what makes this character all the more extraordinary.

Mei Mei, have I ever told you how much I love practically every post you make? In fact, I believe I have told you on multiple occassions :D

It really is the sign of a special family tie. And it seems that with his impending mortality, Thane has certainly released his pride to focus on the things that really do matter. And I think Jolyat recognises that his father is loves him and is trying to set things right. He just doesn't like how he never did anything about it until he was diagnosed with Keprel's.

And utaker, that made me feel bad too. And we had a chat a little earlier in the thread on whether or not Shepard is detrimental to Thane and his son rebuilding their relationship. When I first romanced him, I did feel bad for Kolyat. But then I realised that Thane's last months needed meaning. And that he also needed hope.

That scene is so powerful JECSWU, with the alarms, the red and blue lights flashing on the walls. And the sudden intimacy after violence.

He is definatly worth keeping alive. Sadly some people really don't understand him and they don't want to.
They are really missing out, because he's a great chracter if you give him a chance.
