Bi in real life. Admittedly selectively so but still, the fact I realised this from a video game character amused me greatly.
I didn't mean to imply that romancing the same sex as your real life persona made you gay/bi, just commenting that it pointed the fact I fell into that category.
As for the male perception of Thane I have found it is mostly meh purely because the friendship path with him (and the only one available to M-shep) is overshadowed by Garrus in the bromance aspect. You've also got the issue with him being only loosely tied to the plot that the majority of the ME2 cast suffers from to contend with. Overall I found him a far deeper character overall but he was unfortunately developed quite heavily on his romance. Which is really another problem with the ME2 cast. If you don't romance, dialogue dries up.
That all being said though, I'm a big fan of Thane because of his grit. He's a dying man, who has lost a great deal throughout his lifetime and yet he still managed to dig himself out of that ditch and even resolves to help out the galaxy before he reaches the end. That takes a lot of willpower.
Hi Lyvef1re! Welcome back. Would you like a lamington? Here! *hands out plate of Thane lamingtons* There's more over there. *gestures to returning buffet table, now covered in Thane lamingtons, Normandy pavalova, meat pies, roo burgers, XXXX and VB* Enjoy!
I know I'm basically just repeating everything Cosmochyck said (sorry honey!) But I too agree with everything you say, which I think is subconsciously why I end up romancing everyone and then dumping them all for Thane. The non-romance lines absolutely sucked. All the characters were "meh". I'm hoping that even the npcs have a bit more dialogue this time around. My first playthrough I would stop and talk to Gardner on my way to talking to Garrus and it got
really annoying listenin to the same three lines over and over and over and over.
I did get that feeling of the characters only being loosely connected to the plot. Even Shepard at some points. Almost as if they weren't essential, they just happened to be in the casting agent's waiting room when the developers came in. Rather immersion-ruining.
I love that screenie Cosmochyck! Thane
is looking rather dapper, isn't he?

Oh, I've messed with the canon to create some of these Shepards, and I
justify it by saying that it would be strange to have all of them in the
same universe with some having near-identical pasts. My Carson is
technically not lying to say he's an orphan... he just leaves out the
part about being a "self-made" orphan.
That's one of the
reasons why Carson likes Thane, despite their completely opposite
personalities. He sees Thane as a good father, doing what he can to keep
his son safe and stop him from going down a dangerous path. Thane was
trained from a very young age to be an assassin, but Kolyat didn't grow
up with that lifestyle, and it doesn't need to be that way for him.
Carson grew up killing too (and I can just imagine him bragging to Thane
about how he made his first kill at a younger age), but it was
necessary for his survival, and he was sort of thrown into his crazy
life rather than choosing it for himself in the beginning. Something
that's normal and okay for him could easily get a less-experienced
person killed in the attempt, like Kolyat trying to be an assassin. I
think they both want better, less dangerous lives for their kids.
Self-made orphan. Yeah I can definitely see Carson doing that, and...
Wait a minute? Carson has a child?!

Oh the poor little baby! Carson should not have children!. The poor thing would be killed the first time they got their little hands on the sparkle shooter! And they would definitely get their hands on the sparkle shooter! After all, it is a
sparkle shooter! Little eyes would love it!
