Thane is (I guess) the only character who can die beyond failure in the suicide mission and the only one basically sure to be dead 12 months after ME2. Sure, anyone else can die but they don't have their death set.
Bioware know this and I'm sure they'll make use of it. By keeping him as hidden as possible. For various reasons.
Like Asenza said; he's a character they worked a lot on. I can't see them toss him away with barely *anything*. Wasn't it a rumour that ME3 is placed 2 months after ME2? So Thane shouldn't be dead from his disease or die from it at all (Unless ME3 expands over a very long time)
Don't get me wrong, I'm preparing for the worst, even though I don't want to. I've always been the type who's rather pleasantly surprised than disappointed. But at the same time I can't help but be hopeful.
In a perfect world; all characters in ME3 should have equal chance of dying and living. It'll be most fair and frustrate less people. Just as that you can make through the suicide mission with everyone alive. It's your choice!
Making certain important characters forced to sacrifice themselves with no choice of who would fit a game like ME very badly... It's one thing to force Shepard to chose between two squadmembers, it's another to not get the choice at all and someone just dies.
Unless they do a ME1 and force you to pick between Thane and Garrus. I'd have trouble with that on either playthrough. xD
Sorry for the rant, I'm just trying to convince myself.
