If they wanted a tragic end for Thane why not do this:
Save Thane by a lung transplant between ME 2 and 3 (he could change his mind about that because he is in love with Shepard and wants to help her in any way he can).
So when Shep meets him in ME 3 at the hospital he is ready to fight with Shepard against the reapers. And than later in the game let him sacrifice himself to save Shepard - of course, after a well-done romance with a wonderful romance scene :-).
That's what I would call a tragedy.
Don't give 'em any ideas, they'd just muck them up.
We've already seen what kind of job they do when they kill him and try to make it poignant... killing a man because he's dying of a disease, so why shouldn't he give his life, I mean really. If anything, I feel like someone who's dying should be the last one to sacrifice themselves, seeing as they have less time than others...
Killing a character is easy. Having them live and seeing what they do with their time is far more difficult, but also more interesting.
