Four of my Sheps are in life support.  Drinking and weeping.  At least they have each other.  Posted Image

They don't talk about the two ****es that are happy - one with Kaidan from Virmire days, and one with Garrus from Omega days.  They are actually plotting how to throw the four of them out the airlock.  Posted Image

Robin could USE a peptalk from my Garrusmancer, the vanguard. Although she's a sentinel and a rather squishy paragony one, so I think Esperanza's SOLUTIONS TO ALL PROBLEMS ESPECIALLY PAIN ARE CHARGE approach would not be ideal. I kind of wish my Shepards could hang out.... Hmmm...

Failing that, of course, it'd be REALLY NICE to have some extra talk with Steve. "I know, man, I was in love with this great drell and he just died. I'll put a picture up, too...."

To be entirely honest, I fell into the category of "meh" on Thane during my first playthrough of ME2.  I liked him and that was that; I partially blame his abridged content if he's not romanced, and the overexposure during the marketing runup to ME2.  He grew on me a lot over successive playthroughs.  He is now a bro to my ManShep and a mentor/older brother figure to my FemShep.

Yeah I'm already into the apathetic stage. Like, I just don't even want to think about it any more.

I figure I'll wait until this April thing and whatnot before I get down. Granted, my only Bioware experience is Mass Effect, and my only real game-non-Mass-Effect-trilogy is WoW, so I may be.... naive?

This isn't specifically Thane related but watched the end of ME1 again and...EPIC. Shep comes out of a pile of rubble. THAT is how you write an ending against all odds - and SURVIVE.

Oh, to have Thane AND FemShep survive...whoever posted before that your LI would pull you from the disaster that is London would have been great. And who's kidding who, I'd take any more Thane I can get.

@Sable - I agree on the lack of dialogue - that was true for all ME2 squaddies if you didn't romance them. Poor Garrus was ALWAYS calibrating.

Seriously.  I spent most of my time hanging out with Samara and Legion because THEY would actually talk to me :P

Exactly! How could they get it so right in 1&2 and mess up in 3? The little "call up you LI to your cabin" was a nice touch too for romances and didn't require extra dialogue or more than a little animation.

REALLY getting off point, woops. So, the popularity thing. I think many people had a reaction to him, similar to my little household (and I'm guessing all of you *grin*). But, here is where the "distance" comes in. I sound like a broken record, but if you make one character have such a bleak background, people begin to pull away. It's not that he was unliked, but being told right off the bat that he is dying has an impact. Then add the "compact", dead wife, estranged son, and later (in me3), stabbitied, people become detached. They may still think he's cool, and "goes out like a boss (blech)",, but they just sort of stop caring about him "living"....damn it Thane, ya better get busy dying <sarcasm>.

That is actually my point with how WE (those that romanced or truly befriended Thane) saw and felt about him.  That's why I used my example....(poorly)...with my m!Shep.  Totally sucked me in and his friendship showed that he was wanting to have a life for his son and his friend.  The "essay" <snark> I wrote is me trying to examine his popularity status by those that didn't bother to romance or even truly befriend him.  I can totally see a number of gamers who didn't really bother to even talk (or pay attention) to him AFTER his LM, if they didn't romance him.

It is for the reason you stated, that I couldn't even import my male Shepards.......Thane is a brother to them.....always is, always will be.Posted ImagePosted Image

Plus there are those that play ME for the combat and could care less about who lives or dies. They probably rush the story and always pick Liara.

Yes!  Exactly.  I hold to this: if bw had written Thane either with an extention on his life (i.e. getting lung transplant while Shep is under house arrest), or there was a choice to extend/cure his life in me3, and none of these other players (in the afore mentioned posts) saw THIS version that was released, I have NO doubt these players would have been just fine with Thane's outcome.  I find it hard to believe that the lot of them had their little "ticker clocks" counting down the months/weeks/days/hours to the release of me3, rubbing their hands together saying, "I can't wait to get me3.....I'll finally be able to see that Drell get stabbitied then die from space cancer!"  Nope.....pretty sure Thane's death/no death was not on their minds.

If they want more combat, try playing a bloody FPS. This is a role play game. My role playing includes (well included) a romancing FemShep. :(

ME3 was being touted as an "action-adventure game", not a true RPG because of the combat. And the biotics are a cool feature that a lot of FPS don't have.

@cold- I agree. Those people couldn't care less, so why not have the cure/extend option for those that do? Like Sarendoctrinator that had over 30 Sheps to import!!

Yeah, my only full playthrough started with Garrus and was hijacked by Alenko. Didn't really realise what happened until it was too late. I saw the youtube though. Why couldn't bw put that much devotion into Thane. Oh wait, they forgot!  I still don't even see how that is remotely ****ing possible.

Haha, I missed you so much! :kissing:

Also, you really don't even want to get me started on them and "oops we forgot" ... I cannot ... *takes deep breaths* ... I mean how is that even possible?
Step 1: Research how to design a character that would be sexy and appealing to female fans.
Step 2: Bask in praise from happy fans, award for best new character, etc.
Step 3: Bungle conclusion to romance arc, forget to have other companions even mention his death.
Step 4: Ignore fans.
Nothing wrong with that... <_<

You know it's funny, I always think of games like the old Gabriel Knight series and Phantasmagoria games to be Adventure games, and things like Uncharted to be Action-Adventure.....ya know, a "fixed" protagonist.  I didn't even know that they were advertising this game as Action-Adventure......I assumed (silly Erica) that it would ALSO be an RPG since the other two were (ME1 being a bit moreso than ME2).  hmmmmmm.......blah.  I still think it should have been at least as much of an RPG as ME2 was.  I like the combat in these games, but it's the story and RPG elements that interest me.Posted Image

Oh I think BW marketed it as an RPG and it'll go in that category at any VGAs, but mags and online were tending to put it in the AA world.

@Cosmo - I started writing another PDS shot yesterday in between work, but it wasn't working for me....Trying a new angle, and will have it out today. :)

@kaija - <huggles>

So a number of you yesterday were also discussing the popularity of Thane. Here is where I think some of the popularity for him took a snag. Considering the first reaction I ever had seeing him (and that was playing as a m!Shepard), and the reaction of my husband (who was watching), we were rather enthralled by him. Something both my husband and I pointed out: in Thanes RM the only real noticable plot armor (if ya wanna call it that), is on Shep and Co. Nassana chats our Sheps up, and her mercs have guns pointed at us. Whether or not a fight right then would have been a good thing for Nassana, the point of the scene is to set up Thane's entrance. Now here is where the writing really shows it's teeth. When Thane slips down from the ceiling, he's quick; neck-snap, neck-snap, point blank shot. This may be a small thing, but it speaks volumes. The writers didn't have him making speeches, or throwing witty banter around before he eliminated his targets. This is a common device in so many tv shows, movies, video games, and books. So the fact that they took care not to do that, especially with an assasin, was great. Well received, and Thane immediately became my favorite.

Love Garrus, but even his RM seemed.......too glorified; one man against all odds, too hard to kill with a friggin army, blah, blah, blah...again, still love Garrus, but just seemed so "cowboyish".

Some women will NOT chose him simply BECAUSE of his Kepral's. We all saw (and felt) so much more from Thane, so his Kepral's did not dissuade us from choosing him as our LI. Throw in the hints of a life extention and/or cure, and we probably ALL felt confident in our choice. Truth be told, he was the ONLY choice for me....."I only have eyes....for you...." Kaidan, Jacob, Garrus and Liara, I never felt a strong connection to them even though I liked all of them. Garrus is a favorite of mine, but like others on here have said, never saw him in a romantic light....ever.

So there it is. A popular character that gets ignored by their (bw's) own writing devices. And for a character they spent so much time on, this is more than a pity; it's a travesty.

*tacklehugs Tentura as well* Yes stay with us, love! There has been much discussion of our lovely drell, glad to have you back Posted Image It's like a big ol support group in here. Hell, we all need support from anyone who actually CARES about Thane.

We've all noticed so many parts of the game where Shep can bring up Thane, she acknowledges everyone elses' loss but when it comes to her nope she just doesn't have any emotion. Especially the forever alone love scene you get if you only romance Thane, why not include Shep thinking about Thane-maybe some flashbacks? Or hell have him appear in a dream instead of the damn starchild. I like to imagine Thane coming to my Shepard in her dreams, where they can talk and just be together away from all the awfulness in the universe.

We didn't even get Thane in the one flashback that shepard does have. We get Liara instead.Posted Image
