There was an interesting comment I read somewhere, an observation.. that the ME2 LI's were never meant to be long term because the clues were all there - Thane - Dying, Miranda - works for terrorists, Jacob - same, Jack - bat**** crazy and off the rails... you were only supposed tempted by them, not love them, with the exception of Tali/Garrus but they don't count because they are from Mass Effect and were not created FOR the suicide mission. That coupled with the fact that you could allow ANY of these characters to die on the SM, was BW's way of saying - not really a LI... :/
If you try and find a solid reason for ME2's existence it gets tricky
Anyway, yeah.... they trolled us, basically.... xxx

Ugh well if they didn't want us to love them why did they make them so lovable? It was obvious from the fans reactions to these characters that we DID love them, just as much as we love Garrus or Tali or Liara, of not more for some people. Just because the people who love Garrus/Tali/Liara/VS are the majority, doesn't mean that ME2 characters were any less loveable, they just had more exciting pasts.

Ok, so let's say they were not supposed to be loved. Had I known that going in, guess what? Still would have loved Thane. Not just because I was told not too but because they gave him an interesting past, a personality worth loving, and they all but forced me to get to know him if I wanted to guarantee his survival during the SM. Let's not forget he was designed and drawn for women to fall all over. With the SM and needing to get them loyal, they were feeding you the tools to care for these people, to get personally involved and when that happens one eventually comes to love or really like them. So, if anyone were to say to me, "Sorry, you weren't supposed to care for them", well sorry next time don't ask me to stick my nose in their personal business as a means to get the best ending.

Look at how much effort they put into his creation and how they tried to make him appeal to women as an LI. I still can't believe they just flushed him down the toilet like they did in ME3..

Yeah I remember that and looking at it again only reinforces one feeling.... to take my copy of ME3, carry it out my door, lay it on the ground and curb stomp it into dust. I have also considered hanging it by a rope and shooting at it, letting my dogs use it as a frisbee, showing to my enemies to make them cry, and hanging it over my garbage to scare the raccoons and skunks.

Oh...I had not read this one before! ery intriguing, and indeed, they put in so much effort and so much thought in making Thane; even hader to believe they practically abandoned him in ME3!

I was thinking about this while writing my PAX letter. Half FemShep's straight relationships were put on the chopping block in ME3 (Thane and Jacob). I think the real reason might be due to the statistics BioWare collected from people playing ME2 which indicated that only 20% of players play as FemShep. The other 80% play as manShep. Meaning the FemShep exclusive relationships weren't getting experienced as much in comparison to ManShep's romances.
FemShep players are a minority so they probably felt like it was ok to "cut corners" by axing two of her relationships. It's probably also why they didn't add a new one like Vega or whoever. This is just my theory and the thought really upsets me. I don't know if it's their actual reason for doing what they did, but it makes more sense than the ME2 LIs just being 'flings'.
Afterall, you can still choose to stay with Jack and Miranda and you still get the achievement with them. Their roles weren't that great, true, but they still "count" and their romances can be continued unlike Thane and Jacob.
