Ok, so everyone in here knows that the most common arguments used against Thane are all related to the fact that he died. Whether it’s “you knew he was dying” or “he died a hero, what are you complaining about” or even “you can’t just have a miracle cure”, but nobody (that I have noticed, and I admit I may well have missed it) has addressed the fact that we had other problems with Thane’s treatment in ME3. So I’m just going to make a list of questions that I would love to have answered logically or at least honestly about the main things I found upsetting, that are not related to the fact that he died (but will include how he died).

1/ Why did we only get one conversation with Thane before the Citadel coup?

I went back to the Citadel after every mission to have a chat with Thane only to find out that I that one conversation was all I was going to get , yet Kaidan had something new to say almost every time (I stopped ignoring him to check this). Also, that one conversation focused entirely on the fact that he was dying... We didn’t really have a chance to catch up with him, or ask about Kolyat. It really was very upsetting to not get to talk to my favourite character, especially when he was a LI.

2/ Why did Thane’s disease change?

He had a bacterial lung infection in ME2, but changed to a blood disease in ME3... That is very confusing, but I won’t go into the details as that was covered in the medical discussion over in the #SaveThane group.

3/ Why did Thane romance not unlock the Paramour Achievement?

If people stayed loyal to him in ME3, then why shouldn’t his romance unlock the achievement? Sure, it wasn’t much of a romance in ME3, but if Shep is committed to the relationship then that should be all that matters, no?

4/ What was the ‘private time’ all about?

Really, who’s definition of ‘private’ is taking one step to the side in a crowded hospital next to a giant window? It would have been nice to have had something more like the Citadel ‘date’ with Garrus, which Shep got romanced or not.

And now onto his death...

Thane may have not been on top form during the fight with KL, but he was a master assassin and even in the condition he was portrayed to be in in ME3, I think he would have been able to get a few shots on target. While this was not so much an issue during the fight scene (KL was supposed to be good at that point, after all), it later became a problem for me when KL was so easy to take down later on in the game (and I did play on Insanity). It really diminishes Thane’s abilities as an assassin at that point (yes, even with his condition) and that, to me, is why he didn’t “die a hero”. That, coupled with the fact that he actually just charged into KL’s sword...

5/ Why did Shepard and his/her squad just stand by and watch?

And this is really the main question that I would LOVE to have answered. It is something I really cannot comprehend and I get a headache when I try to think about any possible reason for this. The rest of the Cerberus troops had been wiped out, there was no one else there that would have been a threat to the Councillor apart from KL. Surely at least one of Shepard’s squadmates (or more likely Shepard herself) could have gone and helped Thane while the others watched over the Councillor? I can’t think of any possible reason why all 3 of them were content to just stand by and watch. Especially knowing he was not well and incapable of fighting to his true potential. And especially a Thane romanced Shep would not just stand by and let him die? And then, Shep just ran off to save the rest of the Council without saying much to Thane or giving him medi-gel or anything? Did he/she want Thane to die?!

And to the death scene. Well, again, there is an essay in the medical discussion that covers the blood transplant issue, so I won’t go into it. So...

6/ Why didn’t Shep tell Thane she loved him?

Obviously this is romanced only... but it was very upsetting to not have a romanced only dialogue/cut scene at this point of the game. Thane was dying right in front of Shepard and she didn’t have much to say.

7/ Why did no one mention Thane’s death?

Yes, Shep mentions him when she beats KL, but why did none of her friends seem to care? I was incredibly annoyed when Garrus mentioned Ashley when at the memorial wall aboard the Normandy. My Shep hated Ashley, why would she care about her now, when Thane had just died?

Well, that's. I obviously have a lot of other questions/thoughts but I just put down the main ones. If something I have said doesn't make sense, then please, let me know! It would help with the headaches I end up giving myself! =P

Edit: Sorry for the wall of text!  Also, I took a while to type this up, so if it's out of place with the discussion now, I apologise!

Kasumi gets Keiji in a hologram, but it's unrealistic to cure Thane.
Did these people forget this is a video game.

I could tell you it's a bad joke but that would be a lie. And I'll let the masters of b.s. handle the lies.

@Beanie, yes I would very much like those questions answered as well.

I tweeted him back. When can we expect thane's revival ? Or was that bit of space magic just for Kasumi ?

One good side of this is that we can now link that screenshot everytime someone says a cure is unrealistic and too fairy-taley (or something like that). Especially when it's someone from BioWare, they seem to love synthesis ending.

So disheartened about this right now.

I can't even stomach another ME2 play-through at this point, knowing what game is like and what happens to Thane in ME3. Not having a decent quality final installment to this great game series that so many of us love and are invested in is just so....sad :(

Well, I tweeted Gamble asking him to use that space magic to #SaveThane :D

@BeanieBatt

Wonderful post. I think all of us here would love to know the answers.

I also find myself wondering why Thane was created to be a LI at all if this was truly what they planned all along? It makes no sense. They claim he was created with their female fans in mind, encouraged people to emotionally invest in spite of the illness, hinted at a cure and a treatment, made it so Thane developed a new will to live ..... they did all of this only to pull the rug out from under us in ME3? Why? Hell, they even supported the Cure Thane campaign! That gave everyone even more hope which is extremely cruel considering what they did to the character in ME3.

I'd also like to understand why some people act like it'd be so impossible to cure Thane or prolong his life yet these same people don't seem to bat an eye at all of the other impossible stuff that happens in these games. I don't understand why Thane is singled out that way. And even when you point out the options he had they still ignore it and blather about how he needs to die because he's sick, etc. They don't care that his character development was basically ignored.

All that seems to matter to them is that he dies. Does BioWare think so little of the character that they'd agree that was meant to be Thane's only purpose - to die?

@Beanie - Like your questions. Do you mind if we add some more? I don't want to step on your toes, so feel free to ignore them:

1) Why was his "timeline" altered (i.e. in ME2 he says he has 8-12 months before he is no longer able to fight - not DEAD, but out of commision so to speak - but in ME3 he says he had 3 months to live 9 months ago??

-and as others in the past have pointed out, those estimated life-spans of terminally ill people are generally the average. There are always exceptions on either side of those numbers, so it is NOT unrealistic for him to have at LEAST lived till the end of the game. His original timeline, along with healthy lifestyle, some medical care (oxygen treatments, blood doping - it does wonders for cyclists -, antibiotics, whatever...) and sheer will, could have easily made it so he saw it till the end of the game. My Uncle who died of Pancreatic Cancer was diagnosed at age 76 on Feb.4, 2007. He was given 4-6 months to live. He died on January 28th, 2008. And no, he was not suffering in a hospital bed for the nearly 6 months after his "expiration" date. He had an at home nurse during the last 5 weeks of his life, and went in to the hospital 4 days before he passed. Before that he was still taking walks with his wife, going out for dinner once a week, meeting with his Wine Group every other week.....you get the point.

2)Why did his involvement in me3 NOT include a Hanar/Drell war asset? Why was that given to Kasumi?

-He is are only real link to an entire race (Drells), and by default the Hanar. This seemed like an obvious thing, yet what we get is a poorly scripted fight, talk of death, and then...well....his death.

3) Why is it that we can cure the genophage and adapt the Quarians, all significantly sooner than was initially mentioned in the previous games, but we can't find a way to help the Drell race. YES; the Drell race!! By extending/curing Thane's life, the entire Drell population could have benefitted from it. This is in keeping with a lot of key themes including the ones I already mentioned. People often put up posts about how saving Thane is just one person, but the Quarians and the Krogans are an entire race....SO ARE THE DRELLS!! If he had been ill with some "rare" disease then I might agree, but that isn't what BW wrote. Kepral's is the most common killer of Drell, an already languishing race due to apocolyptic circumstances on their homeworld. So saving/helping Thane, would have inadvertently helped/saved the Drell race.

I have more, but I am running late. Be back later, pets!

I want to hug all of you guys. I don't like seeing good passionate people hurt just because they chose the "wrong" LI and fell in love with his character.

So Kasumi can have her dead boyfriend back, yet Thane must stay dead. Thane was an LI! Seems like he should have priority above other characters, but I forgot...he's a femShep LI so that means he's expendable.

Did Jacob fans get anything?

Just say it BW. Tell the Thane fans you're not changing anything. Let them be able to get over their hurt and decide if they want to fight for Thane anymore. It's the most humane thing you can do right now.

I'm not so sure about downloading EV anyway. Garrus fan, but it seems that Microsoft/BW forget that people still have a 4 Gig hard drive. I'll have to do some major reshuffling between my hubby's Modern Warfare 3 stuff and my Mass effect stuff.

@Julia- I don't think that is what they truly planned all along. I know nobody is going to admit otherwise, but I think something changed during ME3 development... When did Thane's original writer leave? Maybe it had something to do with that? If they did create Thane as a female LI and planned to kill him off in ME3 from the beginning... that is beyond cruel.

And as to the thought process of people like that... something you'll never get an anwser to!

@Coldi - of course, add away! There's plenty more! The timeline is a good point, I have seen people use that as an argument (who didn't bother to work it out, obvioulsy). Sorry to hear about your Uncle.

The other miracle cures in the game bothered me a little too. I honestly did not see a genophage cure coming based on my conversations with Mordin in ME2.

So is Tully trying to tell us to give up? Throw in the towel? Just allow ourselves to keep getting hurt by BioWare?

hm.

Fixed.

Now if I can only convince my husband to give up his TOR subscription in protest, as I already have.  Hm, this could be a good idea to spread around.  Maybe I should make a new thread in the Story/Campaign Section...

That quote from Tully is pretty insulting. Like he's basically telling us our opinions don't matter because we're not the majority. Doesn't matter if we love the character or invested emotionally.

People who don't even care about Thane get to make the decision about what happens to him. Screw the actual fans.

ETA: An option would satisfy the most people but they'd rather alienate Thane fans by taking our choice away.

I don't understand that logic at all.

guys and gals

I'm sorry, but I really think you shouldn't be getting angry about Kasumi being with Keiji again like that. She probably made a AI/VI thing from the memory box. It's not really Keiji, it's a program derived from his memories.

It's sad and creepy as hell.

Also leads to my theory that people will keep making synthetics anyways and repeat the cycle all over again.

Lucky we were just told that wishing for a cure for Thane was unrealistic that we knew he was dying, yadda-yadda... Then someone comes back from the dead, with BW seal of approval.

He wasn't brought back from the dead. Kasumi took his memory box and created a AI/VI. He's not real, he's a program, representing Kasumi's obsession and her inability to let go and move on. His corpse is still rotting in the ground somewhere.
