I have been jumping around the forums today, reading threads I don't often frequent, and something strikes me. I have had these thoughts before, but finally decide to write them down. Some people love to talk about how they feel the different ME games rate. Some say ME, some ME2, and even a few say me3 is the best.
One thing I find interesting though, is posters who talk about WHY they like one game over another. A comment I have seen posted every so often, but is common to see parrotted is, "This is a "TIME" issue.....we are in a war and there are TIME constraints." The clock is ticking, so to speak.
I point this out, because I think this may be one of the main reasons I have a problem with me3 (well....among the other things I have rambled on about..). I like my RPG's to go at "my" pace. Since I role play each decision thoughtfully, I can't suss out all the details so quickly. Even when I have played the games multiple times. Why you ask? Even if I come up with a basic background and story for each Shepard, Hawke, Warden I play, much of the choices I make I decided on the spot. But, I will want to consider things at the moment I am meant to choose. For example; even something as minor as how to handle Helena Blake in ME1 or using the Renegade Interrupt (and you do have to be kinda quick for the interrupts...else ya load a save...hehe) on the Batarian fixing the gunship during Garrus RM; I will ponder on. I may not spend 10 minutes figuring out what I will do...of course not. But allowing myself the chance to examine the PC I am crafting, and dictating the flow of gameplay, is part of what I love about RPG's. Timed assaults and tasks, combined with limited dialogue choices and auto-dialogue, make me feel rushed to get on with the game. And you can be penalized for trying to use the style I prefer to play at.
So perhaps some of these people who say that this is a "war", and "we don't have time" for the pleasantries (expanded character arcs, more moral or character 'defining' choices, romances, ect...), are not wrong when it comes to me3. Problem is, I don't want to play a game like that. Never did. I choose RPG's over other types of games BECAUSE I generally like to take my time. Even with events looming over your Shepard in ME1 and ME2, I felt I had some time. Could flesh out my characters and how they interacted with other characters and the story as a whole. me3, did not seem to support this type of gameplay. So, regardless of Thane's treatment in this game, this game was never well suited for an RPGer like me. This is simply my opinion, based on my likes......nothing more.
