Also of note, the lack of mention after Thane's death actually plays into a survival scenario easily.
There are no lines that mentions Thane whatsoever if he were to die off-screen, i.e. the one, and only thing, that directly references as Thane being dead is the memorial wall.
And I will never buy any argument saying that the triggering variables for memorial wall can't be changed. I'm confident that that detail is not difficult to edit with the scripting tools BW uses.
Heck I'd look into modding that myself if I knew where to search.
However, I have no idea how to actually mod variables (or, if it's even possible without some kind of toolset) and I don't know exactly what data to look for, or in which file the relevant data would be present.
But something I can imagine being possible for us toolset-starved modders, is altering the "stringid=X" (my educated guess is that something like that is the reference for the nameplate)* to be empty for Thane's name would result in exactly that, an empty name plate.
Sure, there would still be a nameplate on the memorial wall, but it would be empty.
*/ If the name on the plates are not decided by a "stringid=X", then it's probably a texture. But I find the latter to be unlikely, that would mean there is a seperate texture for each possible casualty and that would memory-wise be a waste of space in comparison to the "stringid=X" method. A texture would be easier to mod than the "stringid=x" though.
(Sorry for rambling technobabble everyone. Guess my exploits in 3dsMax has left it's mark heh)
*Points dramatically at Emerald* "We'll do THAT!"

Actually, if the techno-gooble you said, doesn't work, there is another very nice solution (which again I hint at in my DLC idea). A new letter from Thane. Once he stays on Kajhee for the treatment, the Illuminated Primacy puts him (and Kolyat) in a version of Witness Protection, due to his outstanding service to the Hanar. But of course, he has one request; a chance to send a covert message to Shepard. This email could contain very general information about his
"death" to Shepard, indicating that he has been
pronounced dead so that his enemies would not go looking for him, but that he is also being moved and identity changed to further protect himself and Kolyat. For a friend Shepard, this would simply end with best regards and hopes for the future. For a romanced Shepard, it can be a further declaration of love, and a promise to search her out, once the reaper threat has passed.
The end result of such an email would be that having his name on the memorial wall would still fit; completely. Not a thing would need to be altered. Viola!
