One day I will play ME again and if Thane is not fixed by then well I'll give him an honorable death on the collector base. That way I can spare him the lonely days staring out the hospital window and the sad little dialogue about how his body is falling apart.

This is what's so horrible about doing the "for science" playthroughs. Taking out Thane (and Jacob) actually makes what happened during the coup and the ex-Cerberus scientists mission more palatable and the game storyline smoother. Nothing is lost from their deaths except war assets.

Kirahe dying for the Concilor and Brynn being more likeable make sense with two loyal teammates dead then alive. Le Sigh.

For anymore playthroughs I have to mod saves so Thane and Jacob are dead. I can't view Thane's death or see Jacob's douchebaggery any more. They're better off dead since ME2 did them justice. And it sucks.

This is... I can't even find words in my own language for this. A true nightmare, I just realised you're right. It's better to let Thane die on a suicide mission than make him survive and wait for his impending death. He survives only to become only a dying man with no other purpose than sacrificing himself for 'greater good' and add more drama to the story. Sitting alone and helpless while waiting to die in the hospital, while Shepard is incarcerated, only to hear later that she's here  visiting VS is a sad fate for someone who was once the best assassin in a galaxy.

But truth is, even in ME2 Shep doesn't mourn him. As if he never existed, really. :crying:

I have less of a problem with Jacob since he's not strictly speaking a d-bag if unless you romanced him in ME2, but I might do this in my current playthrough.  Here's the problem, though--it's bloody difficult to get people killed in ME2's suicide mission without Shepard looking like an idiot.  I found the easiest way to justify it was to skip loyalty missions and chalk it up to Shep not having enough time.  The only way to kill loyal teammates is by deliberately making poor choices.

Yet, Thane is dead by default in ME3. Even though it was hard to have him killed. Harder I guess than losing Mordin and Jack. The two of them I lost on some of  my playthroughs and as far as I know, the next squadmate easy to die is Tali, correct me if I am wrong. The rest requires some really stupid decisions.

For my science playthroughs, I just used gibbed to make Thane and Jacob dead, since I don't want to kill them during the suicide mission in ME2. I just load my perfect (lolz) save into ME3, save when I get the opportunity to do so, load that save into Gibbed ME3 editor and go from there.

My easiest way to remedy the situation is play ME2 as I usually do (just as I did before me3), keeping romanced Thane most definately alive by the end of the SM, then don't play me3 and make up my own ending. Doing it that way, I also don't have to suffer through the disconnect with all the Shepards I role played and molded, nor deal with the lackadaisical beginning and bleh ending.

This is exactly what do. I still love ME1 and ME2. They have fantastic endings that make me feel like the galaxy's biggest hero, so I play them, keep everyone alive, and then make up different endings to ME3 in my head. I'm much happier if I just think of ME3 as a bad fanfic.

I know what ya'll mean...sometimes I feel like I want to say "ME 3? I don't know any ME 3! What's a ME 3?" Posted Image
I just would rather head canon it! It's sad when Shepard and Thane don't have much of a Happy ending at all in the game!

@Askeebe Haha I saw that one day on Yt...the first thing I thought when I saw it was "Why is Thane holding a lollypop?" lol!

I'm discussing this phenomenon in Cosmic Love's next Focus Friday, but it's worth mentioning here too. "Save the galaxy" is generic and boring.  "Save the person you love" is a lot more engaging.  And when you can't save the person you care about, no matter what, it weakens the game experience tremendously.  There's less reason to give a damn.

I agree with you on that! When I played my Femshep who romanced Thane, right after he died....the "Must save the Galaxy" pretty much died in me...and Shepard! How could anybody move on to save the galaxy when you can't get a chance to save that person that you love? So ...yeah I fully agree with you!

So what you said is gonna be in the Focus Friday?...that's Great! Posted Image

Sort of.  I'm mostly using Garrus in the piece because it's the only romance I've played to completion.  (Sorry, Miranda, I'll drag my sorry ass to ME3 eventually.)  But there's some Thane there, mostly as a contrast.  I'll apologize in advance if I got anything wrong about Thane's ME3 romance, but I think I've done my homework.

Hello all, lets see here @ Dine soooooooooo sad it's true Thane and Jacob died noo I didn't work so hard to keep everyone alive only to have them tossed aside in the 2nd game.

@Sable no offense but I disagree Jacob was a total douchebag to Jake Shep. Like the whole naming the kid after Shepard,
Jacob T.: She wants to name the kid Shepard after you
Jake Shep: Oh I'm honored
Jacob T.: Yeah Well Its not gonna happen. No offense

I was all like whoa bro no need to take that tone with me, I didn't p!ss in your cornflakes. There was several other instances where he came off as hostile in his tone or um @sshole, his douchebaggery.

As for Save the Galaxy or Save your lover, well this was my stance Jake Shep was saving the galaxy to have his happiness with Samara, ohhhhhhhhhhhhh and had the paragon interrupt not been there, I'd have thrown my controller and ranting and spewed forth every cuss word in the book and never played the game ever again!!!!!! Oh and my hate for Liara would be soooooo much more greater!!!!!

@Sable that was definitely one of my big problems with ME3, I had always thought that Shepard took strength from fighting for those she cared about. Taking away the one she loved left her with no one in the galaxies darkest hour, and yet she (and the rest of the crew) didn't even seem to care - which made it even worse.

@gears: LOL, I took it more as Jacob just wanting to fend off the phenomenon of a generation of kids named after Shep when the war's over.  Because you know it totally would happen.  And TBH I don't remember him being anything other than grateful and friendly to my FemShep who friended him.

The other way you could interpret the lack of comment on Thane is Shepard completely shutting down as a human being, and everyone else being too scared to mention it.  That's what would've happened if my FemShep lost Garrus.  It's not any better, but it at least makes more sense than "LOL we forgot."

OMG that,  I thought about this the other day. If Jake lost Samara he'd become cold walled off and lead the galaxy to it's death. I even wrote a short thing on Tumblr about the Fall of Thessia and Jake not knowing if Samara was there. It was really fun he beat Garrus up too. Because having no hope and nothing to live, no reason to be, he was a dangerous suicidail man. I go get a link for you all to read it.

HAHAHAHA. Seriously, is it just me or is a large portion of Liaramancers spoiled little brats who are incapable of any sort of empathy?

According to this buffoon, Liara's romance was "seriously short-changed" in ME3. What else do they want, a wedding scene?! I have a hard time taking them seriously when some of them are so blind..

While there are outliers, the majority of us are empathetic to other LI fans, Thane and Jacob in particular. If you came into the Liara thread, you'd see that we aren't insane.
Of course we want more. I agree that we get a lot, but whats wrong with wanting more of something you love? I'm not going out of my way to blockade other people from their LI's, and I wouldn't object to other LI's getting DLC or patches, nor do I hate any particular character or their fanbase, so why do you?

I didn't say all, I said a large portion of them because that's honestly the impression I've gotten with the call for "blue babies." There comes a point where wanting more while everyone else has the equivalent of crumbs in comparison comes across as plain greedy and senseless, sorry. If you don't fit this however that's fine, I didn't say all Liaramancers are like that. The ones who claim they have it bad are just laughable and frankly sad.

Hahahahhahaha, I saw that early on Tumblr it popped up on my dash because I fallow BW Confessions and yes I did go "WTF? You do realize that those things you are pointing out and whining about are why people say Liara was forced on them or she was forcing herself on them."

However not many of the LI's got anything much different form what I can tell, I mean Garrus got the date, and Jack got some kissing, Miranda got a hug and butt touching, Thane got nothing, Jacob got nothing, and Kelly was shafted all over everything they had for her was thrown out the window.

And as for us Samara fans here is an unromanced Samara vid
And here is what us attempted Romancers got for Samara Vid provided by AshiraShepard

If I may, the "short changing" that person is referring to is the fact that there isn't a massive difference between the romanced and un-romanced Liara dialogue. There's a bit more touching, and you obviously get the sex scene, but she's constantly calling you a "good friend" and using the same dialogue with you as she would a player who hasn't romanced her.

So the main problem people have isn't that there is a lack of Liara, it's that there's not a huge amount of romance-specific Liara.

Heh, meet Thane on ME3. Even the prayer is the same for romanced or non-romanced Thane. And Liara comes to try to get into my pants the second I get back on the Normandy after seeing Thane die

This came up a lot on the survey comments, but in 2 interesting forms --
1. The constant "friend-zoning" by Liara of a Shep that she is romancing
2. The people that don't want to romance Liara constantly felt like she was still all over their Shepard.

In both cases, I  think it results from a lack of difference between LI- and friend-specific dialogue, which was a very popular comment when it came to all LIs, but especially Liara.  Players were pissed at both 1 and 2 above.

We all want BioWare to include more story-content with the LIs.  The fact that some LIs already have more content, doesn't mean that they don't want more, and doesn't mean that they don't have a right (just like us Thane fans) TO  want more.

More for everyone = win.

Oh, and Sable wrote todays Focus Friday on the blog!  My schedule is super-wonky for the next few weeks, but I  should be back with anotehr discussion about survey results next week :)

Sorry Giftfish I thought my above comment was attempting to say that. For all LIs in ME3 there was very little difference for how they reacted and were handled. ALL of 'em got shoe horned into a streamlined single arch, with most the same reactions by both the characters and Shepard/Player.

ME3 took and tossed aside almost everything that made it great it was OUR Story, MY Story was Mine, And Not the Same as YOURS, or THIERS. But then ME3 came along and it was all shoved into this single form with a direct path. ME1 and ME2 were like a lake that branched off into several rivers and streams.

ME3 was just one giant lake a single pool with no rivers and streams, everyone's story was almost exactly the same and very little diference.

Look at Thane LI and friend Thane very little differnc in the way they were handled. Hell lets say no real differnce at all.
Jacob. Same thing he cheats and is a total jerk no matter what. He has a very hostile tone at least I felt he did to my Shep.
Jack, a few kisses and a few different lines.
Miranda very little differnce.
Tali, um a picture
Garrus idk didn't romance Garrus (I got only a dude Shep), but he sounds like he got the best of the treatment of the LIs for females.

Hell the same can probably be said for all the ME cast, Mordin, Legion, Grunt, Wrex, Zaeed, Kasumi, and Samara they don't change at all no matter what. Player reaction is the same and the characters hardly change to how the player got along with them.

As I've said ME3 threw away what the series was built upon, that ME Was YOUR STORY, and MY Story wouldn't be the same as Squeegees, or Mnomaha, or Dine, or Utaker, or Warlock, or anyone.

ME3 shoehorned players into the developers and ME3 teams own version of the story, which meant their cannon choices were the only ones that mattered. Hence Liara being thrown at players so much either by having to reafirm the relationship status or Liara being a creepy stalker with a massive obsession. Her creepyness went over board and too far, and that's saying alot considering her appartment in LotSB.

re:Liara

Unfourtunately, things like the bugged Aethyta comment doesn't help diminish the "In-Your-Face" feeling...

The combined metagaming feeling of "Here, romance Liara if you haven't already" and "You romanced a ME2 LI? Pffft...What ME2 LI?" is what grinds many gears and I confess, it used to grind mine too.

Kaidan also suffers from that one, the "I did not cheat on you. I dumped you dammit!" feeling really had me bitter for a while.

Now I can appreciate Kaidan's character again, it's just like Liara, it's not their fault that the "Variables went *derp*" and "Oops..Narrative pacing went *herp*".

Today, I rather focus my ME3 frustration towards something creative (fanart) that celebrates my favorite characters rather than use it to bash characters because of the abovementioned issues. I fully confess, I used to let "dem meta-gaming feels" cloud my judgement, but I don't let it do so anymore.

In short, the blame is not on the characters but rather the writers.

Ymmv on which characters are good/bad (and why they are good/bad), we all have our own favorites and that's ok. But bashing characters is not. I mean, I'm not a big fan of say Ashley personally (but I don't hate her either), but I don't bash her.

Expressing why one doesn't like a particular character is ok, so long as one does not belittle others for liking said character.

(Gah! I hope I'm making sense...I really don't mean to bash Liara, just explaining how I see things over here)
