"I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate what when I fall asleep your eyes close."
It's that intimacy the always pulls me in. It's the quiet, calm assurance he has. He loves Shepard but not in the grand spectacle that love can be but in a silent yet simple way. He simply loves her.
Thane as a character is amazing. There are so many layers and so many aspects that have gone into his creation that he almost seems a piece of art versus a character is a game. So complex yet so simple.

What I find saddening is how misunderstood Thane as a character seems to be; a lot of people unfortunately don't see him the way you, I and perhaps all of his fans do. There is something about him that is so amazingly compelling, something you can't find in other characters.Mei Mei wrote...
Thinking about the impact, not only physically but psychologicaly and emotionally, that Thane has, it brings so many elements of poetry to the forefront. One of the best poems I that comes to mind when I am playing ME2 and interacting with Thane is by Pablo Neruda.

The reason I find his romance so special is because it makes me feel humble, down-to-earth and simple. You said it yourself: love in a simple way, in a way such that it can hardly be misinterpreted. It's there; it's just not screaming out loud that it is. I think that's a wonderful and significant side to Thane's romantic subplot. It goes smoothly, evenly, and is very fitting to his character. Even from Shepard's perspective, it can never be wrong, in my opinion. You can roleplay your Shepard any way you wish but you can't ever feel that romancing Thane is out of place for your Shepard.
I don't really know how else to put it. All I know is that I absolutely applaud Mr. L'Etoile for his ingenuity and well-balanced style of writing. We will miss him in ME3.

Thane isn't for everyone. It's not a coincedence that most of the people in this thread seem to fall into the quiet, reserved, bookish type. (correct me if you're a loud, brash go-getter) I'm not saying you need to appreciate poetry and philosophy in order to appreciate Thane, but if you think poetry is just "a bunch of flowery words for sissies", (something i've heard many times myself) Thane may just be a sissy poured into a leather outfit. He clearly was not designed with the "shoot guns and bang chicks" crowd in mind. I've noticed that those people tend to dislike Thane quite a bit, only because he doesn't "fit" them.
Oh well. Their loss.

Think about it. People who had a thing against Thane, but were too scared to go after him, instead went after his family, killed Irikah. If he had stayed with Kolyat, Kolyat still would have been a target.
Sure, it was probably a little... irresponsible of Thane to have a family, because family is always the target enemies go after, but you can't exactly blame him for wanting a family, and being hopeful and happy enough that keeping his two lives separate would be enough to protect them.
In addition to not wanting Kolyat to follow in his footsteps, it was a safety thing. Distance was a continuous necessity.

You guys are ace!
And we noticed earlier that a lot of Thane fans have an interest in the English language and/or philosophy, I know I certainly do. He is an ethically and morally intriguing character, whilst also being extremely dedicated to Shepard. He literally gives all of himself to her, and I find that one of the most appealing things about the romance arc.

We had this poem read at our wedding - and the bolded part is on my hubby's wedding band in ASCII binary!
I hate to burst the bubble, but I'm definitely not a philosphy person, although I appreciate it. And I am a little louder/outgoing than the quiet, reserved type. However, I appreciate all the arts even though I am not great at them myself.
I'm a numbers gal, along with being a giant nerd/geek. And @Tasha - I wondered if you were using Tasha Yar - everyone loved her!

Hey there! Outgoing, chatty adventurer here!
I have noticed that throughout the fandom there are a lot of really intelligent Thane fans. In NSAS for instance, there are quite a few English and Psychology intellects.
Whereas I don't have much interest for literature at all and I think I'm more suited for exploring the world than exploring the mind! XD

I'm pretty social in RL, but if I have a computer in front of me then I am very anti-social! I go to a lot of LAN parties too, so not so good! xD
But I can see why Thane fans are usually for the more reserved, quiet types. He says himself that he doesn't interact with the crew and he has never talked to anyone about his wife. Although, when he talks about the hanar giving their soulnames, it does seem he had some very close hanar friends.
He seems like the type to be very close to a select few, as opposed to having many friends.

I'm that way when I'm with people of like mind. Nerding out with friends is fantastic. I'm not overly social, but haven't reached the "Get Off My Lawn" stage quite yet. Although I do look quite fetching in a thick winter housecoat and bunny slippers while waving a pitchfork.
Speaking of socializing, how many of you are planning on playing multiplayer? I would love to, but sadly the only internet I can get out here in The Deep Woods is a weird cousin of satellite internet, which only works when it wants to concerning online gaming.

I'll have to play with my sister.
*- Joke. I just haven't any friends who play Mass Effect. The ones who like shooting games are so entrenched in Halo/Gears of War I hardly see them.
I've an Xbox if anyone's interested.

Xbox over here as well! I'll probably be playing with my boyfriend, and the rest of the team is up to fate!
I wonder if it's possible to have a team completely comprised of Drell teammates...

On-topic: I have no plans of touching the multiplayer before I've had my share with the campaign. Still, if anyone wants to add me, go right ahead. My gamertag is Evolved Force. Aside from Modern Warfare and Rainbow Six: Vegas, I rarely play online multiplayer and have not for quite some time now. But I can always enjoy good company with any of you.

If they just give him the red and black outfit without the glasses and maybe with the piercings I'll die happy.

Apparently Shepenwepet was an ancient Egyptian princess. I actually borrowed the name from a PS2 (and GC, and XBox) game called Gladius, a gladiator-themed tactical rpg in which Shepenwepet was one of four scarab beetles that, along with four scorpions, routinely handed me my team's collective arse. When I finally beat that little tournament, (Insect Ze, if you're familiar, sadly Gladius wasn't a popular game, so it's unlikely) I adopted the name, because I liked the way it sounded, and Shep was a worthy foe.
Sorry for the little ramble there. Have a Thane.

...that's the scene I demanded a paragon interrupt hug for. And I don't care if you're roleplaying as Lord or Lady Evil of Evilton, if you pick "Get on with it" on that dialogue wheel, I will have words.
