Interesting, S.A.K's poll shows that most seem to think JT is okay at least and not as hated as I thought.

Just watch, a lot of the "Jacob Haters" will end up turning their attention to James Vega soon enough.

@PrinceLionheart
Spoken truthfully, Vega is in a bad place as the FNG and the human
Male squaddie, however if he is gay (as some speculate) then he probably be more liked (by people on these boards anyway).

Yeah, also Miranda isn't popular as I though she was.

Jacob with his original ME2 powerset would have been near perfect squad mate. He originally had overload and warp. They were given to another squad mate though <_<

AR & Heavy Weapons/Overload/Pull would give Jacob one hell of an advantage over other squad mates.

Why would the devs intentionally gimp Jacob's power set. I mean, they could have given Jacob overload and Miranda Warp to balance the two, because Miranda was an OP Squadmate.

They didn't intentionally gimp his power set. They likely didn't think it was gimped at all. Miranda is balanced. She has warp and overload but her combat skills are weak to balance that.  Weak shields and weak health. She's often the first to drop in combat. Does Miranda have inferno ammo? Can Miranda tank? No on both counts.

I would have liked Jacob to have tech sabotage (shut down enemy weapons) in addition to Barrier. That would be unique and useful in all situations.

ME3 squadmates seem to have one additional power. So maybe there is hope CC Tron. Tech Overload would be an awesome and fitting power for Jacob.

I want him to have Cryo Ammo.  That would be enough of a change.  And it wouldn't be imbalanced if he's only available for a limited portion of the game, which is what I foresee.

But if we're discussing ideal Jacob ME3 builds, then...

Jacob, ME3
-Pull
-Cryo Ammo
-Overload
-<Grenade, perhaps flame-oriented>
-<Passive, perhaps defense-oriented to offset loss of Barrier>

I consulted the Liara level up image for a reference.

I have recently warmed up to Jacob but honestly if it were up to me I would have given him a more vibrant personality, perhaps something like a mix between Joker & Daniel Craig's James Bond. An energetic jokester but knows how to kill you in 5 seconds with 20 different things in a room including the room itself. Even Joker says he's way too positive & happy for the number of ways he knows how to kill people.

I would have made him the Rainbow Dash (My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic) of the group. I'm 100% serious. Look up the character on Wikipedia or YouTube. She's incredibly fun to be around but an expert at everything else.

They could have also made him suave like Connery's bond but that's a bit cliched.

I remember when I first started to really like Jacob, I went hunting for fanart.

I ended up only finding Thane and Garrus fanart ><"

And I typed MASS EFFECT 2 JACOB!

Silly artists and their misleading tags I presume...

Well jupp    =)     I haven't seen too much fan-art for Jacob and FemShep. But I sort of hope that they will be good to Jacob in ME3 and give him some really good scenes. I at least have hopes for my FemShep and Jacob. Maybe that will inspire some people with artistic talent. I can't draw stickfigures    =)

Yeah that is pretty awesome. I particularly liked the interaction between Jacob and Thane. Reminds me of the Commissioner Gordon/Batman interactions.

I was lurking this thread - because I like to lurk - and I don't really like being a hater or ruining a sanctuary for a particular fan base. I'm more of a "to each his own" type of person, but I saw this post and felt like I needed to speak up a bit. Possibly discuss the male human NPCs a bit with some people who actually enjoy them.

HERE WE GO ESSAY TIME:

Contrary to popular belief, the fact that people dislike Kaidan or Jacob but like male companions like Garrus has little to do with the fact that he is alien, and is therefore "more interesting". The cultural aspect can add depth to a character, but that isn't was truly shapes them. I LOVED Ashley (who is human) even though I disagree with her moral standpoints. She was very fleshed out and I admired her spirit. I loved the little stories about her sisters, her father, poems, why she was so deeply set in her ways etc. I also went with Alistair instead of Zev. in DA1. ****, I also love Zaeed. :) Old man crush? Hell yes.

Ideally, I would like someone who could make me laugh or genuinely care about their family life. Kaidan is a very serious and considerate individual, but seems to have problems taking things lightly. He's a serious guy with a pretty serious past. Jacob is also pretty fleshed out in that he practically had to raise himself. He is so independent that he has trouble opening up to Shep. I admire that as well, but it isn't something many people can relate to. Its why many people assume he's cardboard because he doesn't coddle or open up to the player all the time. Kind of like Sten in DA (who I loved) I understand why people love them. However, he doesn't really have much wit/dry humor to compliment his serious independent nature. Both human males are quiet, independent, serious, and strong. Garrus and Wrex almost ALWAYS make me laugh, even though they have serious problems.

I'm actually actively excited about James Vega and have a playthrough set aside that has a completely clean romance slate, just incase a new romance option was available. I hope that he's more positive.

Jacob is probably 2nd to joker as my favorite characters....
...though I thoroughly support a quick signup with the WWE to put CM Punk in the future to talk the reaver's ears off.

That story is a "must-bookmark" for any Jacob fan really.

He's just chill enough to take one for the team...

I actually had a fic planned out with my sis that shows FemShep's reaction when he volunteers to enter the vents... even though he said that he would volunteer less for suicide missions for her... (This fic is still WIP!!! ><")

Everything in that fill is so in-character ^^

Yeah, I don't get the big issue with Jacob, either. :D I didn't romance him, sure, but he's the guy I'd take out to get drunk with. He's a stable, dependable, member of the team. One of those guys that I know he'd have my back. I really have no problem with a character that feels well-adjusted overall, it's a great contrast to the rest of the team. One of the things I love about Mass Effect (and BioWare in genneral) is that there are so many characters that are different from each other. Someone has to be the down to earth guy. The "I'm not a cute alien, I'm not angry, I'm not snobby, I'm not overly smart, I don't have screwed up crazy children" ect guy. And I think that he's pretty darned awesome in that sort of role. ;)

I think I was at the acceptance stage of Jacob not being a permanent squad mate. However, Vega looks like a Jersey Shore reject. I'm back at stage 2
