It's not like he was the only one.  Tali, Jack and Thane were awful too.  That's generally what happens when you are poor at thematically setting up your characters, and then applying those themes to combat, i.e. Bioware design.

I don't understand the hate to be honest, he's got some really good romance dialogue before the "PRIIIIZE", and LotSB dossiers establish Jacob as the character who brings stability to an otherwise insane crew.

He's a Vanguard without charge.  That is, unequivocably, the worst class in the game, and at the very best he could be kept as a Warp Bomb machine if he didn't spam Barrier all the time.  Having to ignore parts of the game i.e. his loyalty mission, to make him worth using makes him a bad character.

Gameplay wise, he's the worst character in the game.

Based on the novels, he should have basically. . .been Zaeed with Biotics.

Giving Jacob Charge would have created even more headaches than his Barrier already does.  The squadmates can't even use melee attacks.  What good could they possibly be at close quarters?  Grunt is an exception, of course, but even he won't last long on the front lines without support.

You're comparing a squadmate to a Shepard class, and I don't know what you hope to prove by doing so.  Squadmates have all of three active abilities, after all, and lack Shepard's flexibility in the bonus power department.

I will agree that Barrier is a problematic skill.  Thankfully, Lair of the Shadow Broker allows us to remove all points from that ability.  It's not a perfect solution, but it's better than hearing "THROWING UP A BARRIER" or "NOTHING CAN HURT ME NOW LOL" every time you're trying to get a Warp party started.

I don't know how accurate this is, but I've heard it said that Jacob originally had Miranda's build.  I don't imagine giving him Warp and Overload would do all that much for his dismal popularity, as I doubt that most players even attempt a difficulty level where squadmates matter.

Exactly, Jacob should not be condemned based on one line of dialog or Jennifer Hale's voice acting.

I actually think the problem is that some people can't really handle the whole "He doesn't have much baggage so you don't have to fix him" thing.

Aside from the Priiize line he's pretty cool.

I can see not appreciating Jacob's usefulness, as it is significantly less obvious than, say, Miranda's.  Tali is pretty awful without a) her bonus power and Shepard as a Sentinel spamming Tech Armor to refresh her drone.  And, yeah, Jack has Shockwave.  So that's violently bad.

But Thane?  Thane is a monster.  Second to Kasumi, he's the best squadmate to use against Collectors.  He's got Warp for the barriers/armor and Throw for the ledges. 

Shredder Ammo is one of the worst skills in the game, but you don't need to invest in it.
