I thought I’d pop on BSN for a moment and state why I am disappointed in what I
consider a horrible, horrible character assassination. I am also keeping this
spoiler light.

What we have seen of Jacob
Taylor in Mass Effect: Galaxies and 2 is an honest, loyal, upfront individual who
promised to be with my Shepard to the end. Even rejecting him in the cabin
causes the romance to continue.  So
pardon me for asking…

What the fuck happened? (yes, I am censor
bypassing. And I don’t care.)

Yes, you can tell me, “but, mrsph, people change!” and
no. I will not accept that as a response. One of the core features of Mass
Effect are my choices, and how they impact my game. To railroad me out of a
relationship with Jacob, no matter what, and force my Shepard to deal with it
goes against that core feature. This is character derailment. Plain and simple.

You can also say, “But mrsph! Thane is going to die!
Doesn’t that ruin the people who romanced Thane choices?” Except Thane’s death
was foreshadowed. It was part of his romance and it looks like they still get a
satisfying conclusion to his romance arc. Both of which the Jacob romance is
apparently lacking.

 And do you
honestly think Bioware would have pulled the same stunt with any of the other
love interests? Hell no. Doing this is like forcing Tali to die of a disease
because someone romanced her, or forcing you out of a relationship with Garrus
because he decided to run off with that turian scout, or Liara hooking up with
Feron the second you turn your back. Doing this to Jacob is a ****ty excuse of
writing him out of the story due to his unpopularity because they believe they
can get away with it without much fuss from the fanbase.

I hope this is not in the final game. But the fact they
even considered it in the first place is probably just as bad. To compare this
to Horizon is unfair. Horizon is a masterpiece compared to this. At least in
Horizon you knew that you were going to be able to continue your romance, and
get a reward for being loyal. Hell, it even says something about this writing
that it pisses me off.

Ciao.

*I do not hold any grudges against Garrus, Tali, Liara or
any other character or romance, and I am very happy those romances are getting
satisfying conclusions. My beef is purely with the writer (or writers) that
thought this was a good idea. And I urge the rest of you to do the same. Please
do not troll other character threads or fans, it will reflect badly on us.

edit: bleg, posting fail. whatever.

I like this human! She understands!

The other thing is Thane... despite his very unclear circumstances (there's a lot of conflicting things going on with him in the leak data and with what developers have said and other, more recent information) he's still Thane. Like Tali and Garrus are still Tali and Garrus. Like Jack is still Jack, and Miranda is still herself.

This isn't Jacob.

ADLegend, I wonder what would Kallen say about this horrible spoiler?

Oh and I just read more of the dialogue.

This is my other response to the writing. And JAYCOBE.

Also, this tweet is also worth re-tweeting.

but if not... I'm saving this.

You know...

I think this dialogue is actually like s/s dialogue for Ashley and Kaidan in ME1: recorded to ensure all eventualities, but not making it into the final product.

Wow, just read what they did to Jacob and... damn, holy **** that's bad...

And kind of racist as well. Way to go, Bioware.

Eh not racist.

It doesn't look all that great that the only black LI is also the only one that potentially cheats on Shep though.

...How long did ME2 take place over?

except s/s dialogue for Ash/Kaidan was never recorded.  it was just copy/paste of o/s dialogue that they thought was easier to just record and sort out later, rather then trying to separate it.  which is how we ended up with maleshep calling himself a woman and telling harkin to stop calling him a princess

this.. this is not a copy paste dialogy.  these are variations of responces for a very specific scene.  if it were like so called s/s dialogue for K/A - this would mean that there are definitely no other options.  just this... drek

@mrsph,

(perhaps spoilers, nothing really blatant)

It does look like you're railroaded out of the relationship. All the dialogue indicates that it has been a while since Jacob and Shepard have talked. So it's nothing you have done or said that makes Jacob go off and do what he does. There is no breakup scene where the two of you part after disagreeing on certain things, or as a result of dialogue choices (like the way Jacob ended the romance in ME2 if you tried to play therapy with him). Just BAM. You show up and basically have to go, "So you forgot about me Jacob, forgot us?" And he's essentially like, "Duh, I know every other LI waited, why on earth would expect me to be like them? You expect me to wait forever?" So no way to avoid it, and it's not very clear if this travesty can be repaired after the fact. Whether anyone would WANT to fix this after the fact is a whole other issue...

@ Xilizhra,

That would be a nice thought, but none of this matters if you didn't romance Jacob. If you're a female shep who went after anyone else from ME1 or ME2 or a male shep, it wouldn't apply. So there is only this one scenario.

Erm, that's an actual Jacob quote from the game. We're retweeting them to Casey. We NEED MORE RETWEETING!

Weren't they married for years? Not that there aren't issues with Jacob, but it's not quite the same thing.

I so didn't read that right. I thought that was a response.

In that case. Crap. So much for that minor ray of light.

I expected a mere cameo and a pre-death love scene but................
T______________________________T

Like Asenza says, every other LI waited, Jacob should be the most understanding of them all, AFTER ALL HE DID SAY HE LIKED HAVING THINGS IN COMMON WITH FEMSHEP AS SHE'S A SOLDIER TOO!

soldier and a spouse.  Jacob especialy as another soldier would understand that sometimes you are appart and you just weather it, untill you could be together again.  seriously, time wise - how much time passes between suicide mission, arrival and trial?  weeks?  months?  half a year at most.  this is nowhere NEAR forever.  its small potatoes.

I admit, I still doubt this will hold entirely true in the finished game.

I only wish I shared your doubts, Xil. The rest of a handful of spoilers I've come upon were fine, but this... this is terrible.

And anyone who knows me knows it's very rare that I speak negatively of the writing in this, my favorite game series. But the 'current' handling of Jacob is fairly appaling. I don't want to have to send the poor guy into the vents every time I finish ME2 t bypass the silliness of his worse ME3 fate.

Lastly, I echo mrsph's "don't insult other fandoms" sentiment. Let's not go there. Hell, man, I genuinely love all the characters. I have no ill will. This Jacob nonsense simply needs to go if it's still in. Somehow.

I posted all of this via PS3 with no keyboard. My hand hurts. But yeah. Had to be said.

If Jacob can't email or call my Shepard in ME3, far-flung and futuristic world that it is, then we have no hope of beating the Reapers.

How are we going to save the galaxy when long-range relationships/communications seem to be impossible....

@JeffZero,

*gives you an achievement for the message*

I wouldn't go after other fanbases, though. Mentioning that the writers would never, ever do something like this to Liara or Tali and Garrus isn't attacking their fans, it's a statement of fact...

Kallen WILL kill both him and Brynne. I already have her getting cheated on in her backstory and she sold everything her exboyfriend had on ebay (which explains her rich achievement on the second PT) and that's AFTER she's already the butcher of Torfan. you'd think being the butcher of Torfan would scare any cheater straight but noooooo.....apparently Jacob gets a case of that as well.Posted Image
