consider a horrible, horrible character assassination. I am also keeping this
spoiler light.
What we have seen of Jacob
Taylor in Mass Effect: Galaxies and 2 is an honest, loyal, upfront individual who
promised to be with my Shepard to the end. Even rejecting him in the cabin
causes the romance to continue. So
pardon me for asking…
What the fuck happened? (yes, I am censor
bypassing. And I don’t care.)
Yes, you can tell me, “but, mrsph, people change!” and
no. I will not accept that as a response. One of the core features of Mass
Effect are my choices, and how they impact my game. To railroad me out of a
relationship with Jacob, no matter what, and force my Shepard to deal with it
goes against that core feature. This is character derailment. Plain and simple.
You can also say, “But mrsph! Thane is going to die!
Doesn’t that ruin the people who romanced Thane choices?” Except Thane’s death
was foreshadowed. It was part of his romance and it looks like they still get a
satisfying conclusion to his romance arc. Both of which the Jacob romance is
apparently lacking.
And do you
honestly think Bioware would have pulled the same stunt with any of the other
love interests? Hell no. Doing this is like forcing Tali to die of a disease
because someone romanced her, or forcing you out of a relationship with Garrus
because he decided to run off with that turian scout, or Liara hooking up with
Feron the second you turn your back. Doing this to Jacob is a ****ty excuse of
writing him out of the story due to his unpopularity because they believe they
can get away with it without much fuss from the fanbase.
I hope this is not in the final game. But the fact they
even considered it in the first place is probably just as bad. To compare this
to Horizon is unfair. Horizon is a masterpiece compared to this. At least in
Horizon you knew that you were going to be able to continue your romance, and
get a reward for being loyal. Hell, it even says something about this writing
that it pisses me off.
Ciao.
*I do not hold any grudges against Garrus, Tali, Liara or
any other character or romance, and I am very happy those romances are getting
satisfying conclusions. My beef is purely with the writer (or writers) that
thought this was a good idea. And I urge the rest of you to do the same. Please
do not troll other character threads or fans, it will reflect badly on us.
edit: bleg, posting fail. whatever.
